Carne, Carne Saltena Frita, Vegetales, Cebolla y Queso Empanadas
    Nicolas L.

My wife and I recently visited El Hornero while visiting the San Telmo market. The food stall is known for their empanadas, so we ordered a variety: Carne, Carne Saltena Frita, Vegetales, and Cebolla y Queso. The empanadas had a soft nicely doughy warm pastry. The Carne empanadas were filled with tender beef, savory potatoes, and flavorful gravy. The vegetable empanadas were filled with tender nicely seasoned veggies. Overall, this was a nice stop for quality empanadas.

Food was very filling. Huge crowd for little hole in wall. Service fast very authentic in traditional market stalls. We had 4 -carne (beef) --pollo (chicken) -cantimpalo y queo (mild spanish sausage and -cheese) and -vegetales (eggplant pumpkin zucchini)-

This place is located in San Telmo Market. It is busy and rightly so! My bf got the beef belly empanada, and I got the chorizo and cheese empanada. I have to say it's def one of the best empanadas I've had! Mine was filled with cheese and super hot and yummy! Worth it!

Fried Carne Empanadas... The Best in BA....

The best Empanadas in BA, I can't get enough of their fried carne empanadas, they are absolutely the best in BA. They might cost more, but the size is also bigger with more filling with a very thin skin. Their salsa is also the best in BA, between my wife and me, we ate 4 empanadas and 2 bowls of salsa. They are English speaking restaurant, so you don't need to Google translate, which is a plus.

Cool little spot to stop and have an empanada. Buy one of the entrances, this place was pretty happening. I can see why the empanadas are delicious. Very traditional, and it gives a cool view when they put your empanada in the oven. Amazing. Definitely a must stop. I would say to share an empanada or a couple, as they do tend to get feeling, and there is plenty of food in the market to be enjoyed.

This place specialize in empanada they have a big list of choice you can choose from, not just popular for the tourist but a lot of locals come to order to go. They have a cocktail bar right across offers extra seating. The empanada all fresh made from the oven, I love the flavor of the beef tripe (they called it beef belly stew) but the chicken and beef ones are also very good, the size are very big. You will get full after a few bites.

You must enter the shady underground plaza with the barber and sex shop, walk all the way to the back, and there you will find this unassuming little empanada shop. No habla Español, but navigating the menu was easy. They make beef, chicken, and ham empanadas, plus four vegetarian flavors. I ordered one of each of the veggie options, plus a few Carne Picante ones for my boyfriend. Their empanadas are made fresh to order, so be prepared to wait about 15 minutes. There are a few tables outside, but if dining in a fluorescent lit basement isn't your thing, you probably want to take your order to go. My empanadas were still piping hot 30 minutes later when I arrived back at my hotel. The best of the vegetarian selection was the Pikachu, a four cheese empanada with mild chili spices. The filling was packed with richly savory flavor without being overly oily or salty. The Queso y Cebolla (cheese and caramelized onion) and Pascualina (Spinach) were also fantastic, but more on the mild side. The Choclo (sweet corn) was okay, but too sweet. It tasted like congee with honey in it-enjoyable for a bite or too, but not one that I would order again. Highly recommended.

La Puerto Rico is a "Notable Bar." It was founded in 1887. It's located in the Monserrat neighborhood a couple of blocks off the Plaza de Mayo and up the street from the beautiful Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi. The waiter explained to me why one must never say El Puerto Rico. It's La Puerto Rico. But apparently my Spanish is not good enough to catch the nuances. Just go with "la." But I do know this. La Puerto Rico was great for lunch. The service was excellent. We both had huge slices of savory pies -- think of the lunch in an English pub, but tastier. Mine was pumpkin and onions and it was terrific. My wife had a glass of lovely white wine. I stuck with a soft drink. Some of the older reviews are pretty critical. Apparently La Puerto Rico shut down during covid and reopened with a new menu, chef, and servers. If you're nearby, give La Puerto Rico a try.

You can tell her has been doing this for years at this restaurant and had his routine down. We had the Continental Breakfast, which came with fruit, eggs, today and deli meats for two, along with two coffees and fresh squeezed OJ. At first, i didn't think it would be enough food but i was super wrong once i saw the sizes of the plates and food stacked up. Eggs were ok, deli meats and cheeses were good but my favorites were the carbs (bread) and the fresh fruit. And the ORANGE JUICE here was so fresh. Enjoyed it more than my coffee . Should've ordered 2!

My friend purchased some fresh figs from a stand - she said that they were good. After perusing a few more stores checking out some of the antiques, clothing and artwork we found thw place to just be uncomfortably hot. It was very busy early on Sunday afternoon so the crowd was substantial and with no air-conditioning, it was very warm. So we left soon thereafter. Perhaps if we were in the city longer, it would be worth returning amd spending a little more time looking around or getting small bites or drinks. You may want to include on your list of places to visit to decide for yourself.

Topping the list of things I wanted to experience in Buenos Aires was San Telmo Market (aka Mercado…read morede San Telmo), a national historic monument and market hall that's been around since 1897. Because I also wanted to experience the Sunday street fair (Feira de San Telmo) outside its doors I came, initially, on a Sunday. Big mistake. By all means, enjoy the street fair on a Sunday but by no means try to enjoy San Telmo Market that same day. By late afternoon, when I tried to enter the market hall (consisting almost entirely of food and drink purveyors), the place was so packed that one could barely move. The sole place I found with any space was an unoccupied stool in a wine bar so I plopped down and drank wine for the next 90 minutes, not an entirely bad idea. Getting food - let alone navigating myself around the place - seemed a task beyond my abilities. I left San Telmo Market vowing to return on a day when I could walk its aisles, see all of the places to eat and drink, and sit down to enjoy a meal. I did all of this on a weekday afternoon with success. The hall is filled with places to eat and drink (and really, not a lot more than that) and checking all of them out was fun. You could find similar food elsewhere in Buenos Aires but then you'd not be sitting inside a historic market hall. Make time for San Telmo Market but if you go on a Sunday, don't say you weren't warned.
