Most delicious latte I've ever had. They made me a Cafe de Olla latte. I never knew that was possible. It's located centrally inside el Mercado Hidalgo. It's a tiny little cafe so you can't sit inside. You order inside and then wait outside for you make to be called. Plenty of benches and chairs to hang out. They accept card or cash. However, I recommend you bring pesos! Parking is cash (Mexican pesos) only. If you get in a pinch like I did, you can take some USD to the restaurant on the corner and they'll exchange it for pesos. read more

I don't know why I hadn't been to this market sooner. They have everything you need for your cooking needs. Even for your party needs. They sell candy, pinatas, cookware, traditional Mexican dishware, cheeses, teas, freshly made tortillas, fruits, veggies.... and so much more. I personally go for the nopales (cactus) and these amazing little vegan flour tortillas (made from oatmeal). But that might change as every time I go I find something new. Oh yes one more fav.... the coffee! They sell coffee beans or grinded, but in the middle of the market there is a cafe called Mexico te Despierta El Hidalgo. The coffee is SO GOOD! This location wasn't here the last time I came to the mercado a couple years ago. I decided to try it out and see how it was and I gotta say, it makes American coffee shops taste like dirt and cheap sugar. They use coffee beans grown in Mexico and let you know what each strain is on their menu. If you're a foreigner and don't speak Spanish or have someone that speaks Spanish, you're gonna have a hard time ordering something. I ordered a frappe because it was getting hot and didn't want something hot or iced. I ordered the Oreo Frappe. It was 50 pesos which was about 2.50 US Dollars. The frappe itself was creamy and not heavily sweet. You can taste the blend of the coffee with the Oreo cookies. It was mixed well and there are no chunks like you usually get in other places. No small chunks of ice neither in the frappe. They put an Oreo on top with the whip cream to give it an aesthetic look. The location itself is an island compared to the rest of the Mercado. It's looks like a spot you'd find in Portland, but way more expensive. read more

During a midday trip to the Mercado Hidalgo, we needed a caffeinated beverage to get us through the remainder of the day. Since this was the first place we spotted, we decided to try it based off the stellar reviews and it didn't disappoint! I love that all the coffees are locally sourced and they show what beans they use in all beverages. They match up the coffee beans with a sticker icon on the menu board so you can see what exactly you're drinking. Even someone like me who doesn't speak much Spanish was able to put two and two together and it was cool to see the product first hand before we consumed. We went with Americanos and they were fantastic. You can tell they know their coffee as the drink was super smooth and not the least bit bitter. No cream needed and I wish I had ordered a larger cup because I loved every drop. Though they have limited seating, we chose to take ours to go so we could experience the busy market around us. If you're looking for shade, they have some benches outside of the shop adjacent to some of the only restrooms. It's a good place to get off your feet while taking refuge from the sun. They use coffee beans from all over the Mexican republic. The girls are very nice and helpful when you are trying to make a selection. We like coming here before we do some shopping at the Mercado Hidalgo. I usually enjoy their Mocha, tastes like "Abuelita" Mexican hot chocolate with espresso, yum :) Prices are very reasonable, paid like 9 bucks for 3 lattes and an cafe americano. read more

First of all, this place is rad. It's in the middle of Mercado Hidalgo, and on top is a church. How cool is that? They have arabica trees (not sure the varietal, sorry) growing outside, and inside is just as magical. The owner is PASSIONATE. It's great to hear him talk about the menu, as each drink has a story behind it. He cares about quality and preparation, and it shows. I tried the cafe de olla, made traditionally, and it is so warm and comforting and sincerely perfect. We also had an americano and an aeropress--same beans, different preparation methods. These were really good, but perhaps a little underextracted for my preference? Really enjoyable nonetheless. We finished with the lechero, similar to a latte but with boiled rather than steamed milk. It was sweet and delightful and super drinkable. All the beans are sourced from Mexico in the expendio fashion, and the staff pay intense attention to detail to make excellent drinks. No one spoke English (at all) so ordering was a bit challenging. I always try my best Spanish, and most times all words can be figured out. Thank goodness for a helpful customer. I had cafe de olla and really wanted some cream/milk, but I was just given the drink and no one paid attention after that. Even when ordering, we were standing right there looking at the staff and they were just standing at the register looking bored and disconnected. It took several minutes to get the woman at the register to even look at us. I also ordered some beans and waited for the bag. Staff was not smiling and not very friendly. It was odd because such raving reviews. I almost felt like I was in the wrong place. LOL I don't think I would go here again unless at the Hildago and it was convenient. read more
