My first cocktail was perfect or shall we say a "Pear-Fect Manhattan". This play on the Manhattan had a hint of pear and was spirit forward. We continued the evening with two sharable plates, the first was the Tenderloin Steak Bites served with a perfect Wasabi Kimchi Sauce. As tender as it was, the steak could have used more seasoning or being marinated in that delicious sauce. The second sharable was the Chile Seared Shrimp, placed atop delicious Cheesy Grits, very yummy. The evening ended with the most amazing dessert and paired cocktail. By all means, do yourself a favor and indulge in the most decadent Butter Cake drizzled in a Bourbon Caramel Sauce paired with a Amaretto Sour cocktail. Each beer ticket costed $6 which was a little steep, but to be expected at an event like this. I was really hoping to see TotBoss show up at this fair, but I saw the list and knew they wouldn't be there.. (secretly hoping inside they would come!!- if you haven't tried them they are BOSS). It was a neat little set up, all the trucks arranged in a big loop. A few things that turned me off.. -Lack of tables. There were only a handful of picnic tables and taller standing tables, and the food was not always easy to tackle while walking. -Lack of shade on one of the hottest days yet this summer. There was one tent to get some relief from the sun. That was it. Would I go again, yes. But I think I'd rather do a different location. At least in uptown you can go into the nearby shops for some relief from the heat.

Gourmet burgers with fries & cheese curds - 4 stars…read more Tonight I checked out the PJ's Grill food truck at Alloy Brewing in Coon Rapids. Their specialty is gourmet burgers. I ordered 2 burgers to check-out what PJ's is all about. First, I got the PJ Burger. It has to be good since it's named after the truck, right? It came with Pepper Jack Cheese, bacon, peanut butter, and last but not least, a sweet grape reduction. It was great. Second, I got the Reuben Burger. This one came with corned beef (on top of the beef patty) sauerkraut, Swiss Cheese, and 1000 Island Dressing. They were out of pretzel burger buns but it was still good. In the past, I've tried a ground beef burger with corned beef ground into the beef patty. But I've never had it on top. I think it's better on top because you can taste it better. Everything looked so good, I truly had a hard time picking what I wanted. So I ended up getting 4 different items. Okay...so I ordered 2 of the signature items. First, I tried "The Sweet Chick" with a sweet potato waffle, fried chicken, maple glaze, with spices, topped with a few sliced jalapenos. Wow - heavenly! I also ordered the signature "SMACKaroni" mac & cheese creation with several cheeses including Gouda. Again, a home run. Both of these dishes were a smaller size so they came together in one clamshell box. The mac & cheese functioned more as a yummy savory side. It was perfect. I was so delighted with the flavors, I went back and I ordered 2 more foods to take home. I got the savory "Chicken Dumplin" waffle, topped off with diced scallions. It came with a side of fried rice. And last but not least, I went with a super sweet selection, "Nana's Puddin" waffle with sliced bananas, nilla wafer cookies, caramel, and whipped cream - Ya' Man! Every bite was excellent. If you look closely at the waffles, they're more than just standard waffles. I noticed lots of detailed little ingredients and spices. A Hmong eggroll truck that changed their eggrolls to make it the Chinese American eggrolls; wrapper, fillings and all. THIS Eggroll Queen, is sticking close to her Hmong roots. An eggroll that is more meat and noodle based with a good mix of vegetables to keep it from drying out. I always like to try and support small businesses so I wanted to give them another shot, and I'm glad I did. I got one pork eggroll and I'm glad I only got the one cause that sucker was HUGE. The eggroll was flavorful and seasoned well. The little sauce dipping cup with adorable, adorned with their label now. 100%, I finally had the famous state fair egg rolls this year and I think the Eggroll Queen beats them by far. Only thing they might have on them is the extra crunch factor due to the rice paper wrapper and might be preferred for people who prefer more meat but no disrespect to the Eggroll Queen at all, their wrapper was also crispy and had plenty of meat. I will say, service wasn't memorable in any good or bad way--the interaction was kind of forgettable. But don't take that as a negative, as there were no issues.
