Chicken tacos and a very good margarita
    Todd C.

Patio season is finally here so wifey and I decided to stop at El Gordo for the first time on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. We were seated right away which was fortunate as the patio was completely filled up about 10 minutes later. The staff was very attentive and we ordered lunch within 5 minutes of being seated. My margarita arrived quickly but the starter chips and guacamole took another 35 minutes to hit the table. Well, that timed out nicely for another round but wow the wait was way longer than expected. As usual, my first impressions of a Mexican place start with the quality of the margarita and the chips. Both boxes were checked. El Gordo has a very good selection of tequilas to choose from. I went with a Casamigos Anejo which was pricey but excellent. This is a very traditional margarita with fresh lime juice and a very subtle sweetener (if any). I loved it! The chips were homemade and fresh with lots of sea salt, excellent as well. The guacamole was average, a little too creamy and not much else going on. The salsa was great, vibrant tomatoes with chipotle, nicely done! I ordered chicken tacos with a yummy chipotle sauce and smoked corn. True authentic Mexican aficionado's won't be impressed but the tacos were delicious. They used marinated chicken thighs so the protein stayed moist and of course had a ton of flavour. Barb ordered a chicken salad bowl which had similar chicken and was reportedly excellent as well. A great visit on a spectacular day!

Very disappointed in the food today. We got the fried calamari and a small nachos with pulled pork. Only of the fried calamari bowl was actually calamari. The other stuff was fried onions. The batter was very salty and oily. As for the nachos, the pulled pork wasn't even pulled pork. It seemed like chunks of pork chops on some chips. The total for 2 appetizers was almost 40$. Definitely not worth the price. As for the service, the staff were nice but they forgot to give us utensils and napkins and we had to ask to get more water. Don't think I would come back.

    Margarita Sunday $6
    Amber H.

Update Went on margarita Sunday which is $6.00 and shots are $8.00 if you're in the mood to party. Food isn't cheap and a bit to over priced for what it is. $15 dollars for a plate of 3 small tacos isn't ideal but I do have to give it them flavours wise its good. Salad was $15 which was not big for what it was. Avocado and cherry tomatoes with guacamole smeared on the bowl and a dash of crumbled feta. I wouldn't get it again as it's not worth it. Friendly service and a great vibe going on inside. Wish the location was a bit bigger as it feels up quickly.

So despite the bad-ish Yelp reviews me and my friend tried it anyways. We were pleasantly surprised and would definitely come back! Reasons it didn't quite get all 5 stars from me: - I prefer a more tex-mex style margarita that is slushy, this was straight up traditional tequila with lime on the rocks, strong bien sur, but me n Tequila had a messy divorce years ago and we still haven't forgiven eachother. So for me it's a bit 'too tequila' in the straight up version they serve here. This is a personal preference thing not a reason I would necessarily upgrade nor downgrade the score. - The side salad we ordered was just awful. It was boring, tasteless and just blahhhhhh. So much so that I wouldn't even risk ordering a different salad if this is the salad they choose to serve with the dishes. A complete waste of food, we each took 2 bites to give it a chance and decided 'oh hell no this sucks'. An improvement on the side dish would definitely merit an upgraded score. - The mojitos were good-ish...but too much on the sweet side. I think they used a mint that is too douce or maybe a rhum that doesn't have enuf of a kick. I tried ordering it once with no agave hoping that would take care of the too sweet factor, but it was too sour without the agave. Im pretty sure they just need to use a stronger mint and a stronger rhum to improve this one here. Put it this way: it ain't got sh*t on La Distillerie. Again fixing the mojito would definitely merit an upgraded score. - The bathroom is super tiny and there's only 1, fine, except the lock is kinda busted/glitchy which ended up getting me walked in on mid-pee. How embarassing: literally caught w my pants down. I advised the staff and they kinda just said yahh hafta really fight with it to close it properly. Here's an idea guys: maybe have it repaired? Mindblowing, I know, but just a thought. - The prices are a bit too high, either lower the prices, or add an option to order the tacos à la carte for 4-5$ each, or add more tacos to the plate for that price point. I.e. they could either increase the portion for that price or decrease the price for that portion, either way would merit an upgraded score. Ok now let's get to why it ALMOST did get 5 stars: - First, foremost and utmost : ROSALIE, THE AWESOME BARMAID/WAITRESS. She impressed us both 100% when I left for a few minutes. My friend who's a decade older than me and a dude, ordered me my drink with the extra oz of rhum we thought might fix the too-sweet mojito (it didn't). But here's why we love Rosalie: she refused to serve it until I got back. Why? Because who's to say the dude I was with wasn't tryin to get me stoopid drunk to take advantage of me?! Wowwww this chick's got our backs fellow womenz, how fookin lovely is that?! We both couldn't get over it, I'm still floored by her thoughtfulness. I immediately gave her the ok to serve me anything and everything my friend ordered for me in the future and that I totally appreciated her lookin' out. - The service in general: we were genuinely cared for by both staff members our entire 3h stay they even let us keep drinking and ordering right up until their closing minute. We especially appreciated that we were given a heads up so we weren't offended or shocked when they closed at 9:30pm on a Sunday. - The decor, very comfy hipster mexicano and very aesthetically pleasing. Loved all the Sugarskullz around and the wood and leather Texas BBQ vibe. - The Tacos OMG. Yes, yes they're hipster fusion tacos. Don't expect the coveted authenticity some of u food snobs insist upon. And I wouldn't want it any other way. Do add the spiciest salsa of the 3 (offered in generous portion), and don't bother ordering extra sour cream, like we did, you won't need it. The soft corn taco tortillas were perfect too, tasty and fresh. The Tacos: - Colifor : looked dry but ended up being delicious!! Curry chickpeas and cauliflower were the subject of a heated debate of what constitutes a hipster ingredient lol, but hipster or not it tasted damn good, so freaking smart putting this in the tacos. Brilliant. - Pollo Feliz: "Fk yah"! We both swore when we took the first bite, it was that good. Fantastic, by far our favorite and we adored all 3 kinds we tried. Spicy chicken with a good chipotle sauce with a good kick n ohhh soooo yummmm. - Arracha : supposedly spicier than the pollo feliz, but we found less spicy. They were delicious as well with juicy tender chunky beef cooked to perfection and tasted great with the spicy salsa! I'm not sure why people rated this spot so low I thought they did a really good job at offering a delicious product in a nice comfortable environment with attentive service.

Pineapple cilantro cocktail ($12) = delicious
    Tamara H.

I went there recently for a girl's night. As the night went on, the music (and people) got much louder, and the lights were dimmed to set the mood. To start, I ordered a delicious and refreshing pineapple margarita. Having been here before, I knew that one order of tacos each wasn't enough to fill us up. So we ordered the vegetarian & chicken empanadas served with homemade salsa. Each order of empanadas gets you two empanadas for $9. That salsa is so good they should sell it by the jar! The empanadas were yummy but a little overpriced. What's fun here is to share. We ordered three orders of tacos at $12 per order. We tried the Pescado tacos (grilled cod fish with creamy slaw, mango & avocado), the Brisket tacos (spicy braised beef with creamy slaw & pico de gallo), and the PFG tacos (fried chicken with chipotle mayo, creamy slaw & cilantro). I found the pescado to be too salty, and while the fried chicken was good, my favourite was the brisket. So flavourful and juicy! I would definitely order that one again. To finish off this yummy Mexican meal, we ordered churros for dessert. They were good but definitely not the best I've had in Montreal. At around $45 each, it's a little bit pricey but we had a great time and sampled some delicious food in a trendy atmosphere on Notre Dame Street.

This spot seems to always be busy so I decided to stop in late one night when the restaurant was less crowded, however even then, a spot on their outside terrace was not possible! The location on a corner of Little Burgundy attracts the masses but after trying their tacos and a cocktail, I couldn't understand why?! Portions are small and pricy. The tacos de arrachera were good but not great, and at 16$ for three, were not really worth it. The "chef cartel" cocktail, made with rum, jalapeño, hibiscus, mint and pineapple, sounded interesting but was missing punch. The venue is nicely decorated, very informal, and a great spot to maybe share a sangria with friends, but I wouldn't go back for the food.

    Lamb nachos! Must try!

With a stomach that was begging for something to eat I can easily tell you that tacos are always on my mind, I came here for a random get together with friends and I found this gem. El Gordo Tacos provides the ambiance of a small Mexican dinner and the casual fixtures of Montreal. The service staff was there and provided me with answers to all my questions. Beer is a must if you're not too sure what you want. I felt like be adventurous and ordered the Lamb nachos. No, no you read right... LAMB. Can I say that these were delicious! The sweetness of the corn and the spiciness of the peppers were just great. With the nachos I ordered 4 tacos for the small price of 10$.. in which you get what you pay for and that's it. They were tasty but nothing I haven't tried before... but those nachos though...*insert droll pic. Overall I was very surprised on what they offered and didn't leave with an empty stomach. This place is worth a shot and also take advantage of their small terrace!

Since it's a beautiful day, and I am hungry; I felt to have lunch at an outdoor terrace. We were on Notre Dame street; my mom spots El Gordo, looks very busy. She says if it is busy then it must be good. Despite the restaurant being busy, the waitress was able to give a spot outside. It was a while for the waitress to come to us to take our order, but the service was super friendly. I ordered El criminal (a platter with two chicken soft tacos, salad, guacamole with chips, and churro with dolce leche. As a drink, I got a white wine sangria. In honesty, there was nothing extraordinary about the taste. I had better sangrias. The company was good, the weather was perfect... so we enjoyed our time in the restaurant. I still have to find the perfect tacos in Montreal.

The hunt for the perfect #cheesecake cont'd... the tequila key lime pie cake - good ratio of gelee to cheese, but that crust though also, the chicken fajitas are good. Drinks were ok, meh at best. The scene is cool, perfect for after work chilling and date night fun!

I came here because my friend recommended it. It was very packed and we were not able to sit out on the terasse. We ended up inside. I ordered calamaris, chili and a piña colada. Ughh they definitely did the piña colada wrong they used agave syrup which is not what you put in a classic piña colada :/ you usually use cocnut milk or cream and i didnt taste that at all. Pretty disappointed with that! The service: was a little slow but super friendly The food: The calamaris were really delicious that I can tell you! The chilli was great a little too spicy for me but very Delicious ! I love that white drizzle on top it had a sweet kick to the the chilli. Overall, it's a cute little resto but I believe there are better taco places in montreal. I don't think I'll be back. The piña colada really turned me off because it wasn't the original classic ingredients that were used.

We stopped in one night on a whim. Got the calamari and an assortment of tacos with some friends. I think I had the chorizo and shrimp tacos, my wife and friends got the pork tacos with pineapple. Everything was good. The tacos were good, calamari was good, wait staff and service were all fine. As a place to chill and grab a quick bite it did the job, just didn't particularly stand out to us.

Very cute Mexican spot! I went on a Thursday night, and even though it was busy, they did their…read morebest to get us a table. The staff was friendly and super kind. I had the birria tacos with a strawberry margaritaeverything was very fresh and really good. Service can be a bit slow, but the quality of the food makes up for it. For dessert, we shared churros with ice cream. The churros were to die for so fresh, but I'd probably skip the ice cream next time since it was a bit too much. Overall, I really enjoyed this place. Just come with a bit of patience, as service may take longer than expectedbut the food is definitely worth it!

There was an empty glass given but there wasn't even ice or a slice of lime or anything served with it. Asking for some ice for her drink took incredibly long too with how slow the service was. - the AC inside was WAY too cold, so cold that it hardened the cheese on some of the dishes as we waited for everyone's food to come out Overall this restaurant's food and drinks are great, with our experience marred by poor service. There seemed to be a ton of staff available the day we dined so there wasn't an excuse for how long it took to be served and to pay our bills.
