    Birria tacos

This place might just have the best birria tacos, the meat was so tender and very reasonably priced, especially cuz I was visiting from Toronto! I had the hibiscus iced tea and it was delicious, the horchata was a miss for my friends and I thought. Such cute decor too.

It's Taco Tuesday and we were very excited for the beautiful weather on cinqo de Mayo to get some tacos. For that we decided to go to @tacos_donrigo. Colourful and lively, beautifully decorated to the smallest detail; we really loved the ambiance and intoxicating smell as soon as we walked in. We got enough food to last us more than one meal (because when do we not?) and every bit of it was delicious but what really wowed us was the various exquisite sauces. We would drink that stuff straight. (kidding but... Only a little ). As we were eating @mtloroblanco, a mariachi band, showed up and made our experience that much more wonderful

Wife and I came from California to visit my cousins in Montreal. I guess I can't go more than 4 days without eating tacos so they took us to who they say are the best tacos in Montreal. They weren't wrong. The food is great. I had the torta and my wife had the queso birria tacos. They were both amazing. We also ordered some quesadilla and Don Rigo was nice enough to give us one on the house. Amazing service. We spoke with Don Rigo afterwards to thank him and tell him the food was amazing.

Finally got to try out Tacos Don Rigo which opened just a few weeks ago. You get transported to Mexico as soon as you enter the restaurant. The decor brings a welcoming and fun vibe. We ordered (to go of course) the QUESA BIRRIA - slow cooked beef sandwiched in two tortillas with cheese and grilled to golden brown perfection; served with a flavorful broth. YUM! You can taste the pineapple in the meat inside the AL PASTOR burrito. I asked our server Jimena to put everything in the burrito - refried beans, rice, corn, onions, jalapeño, cactus salad/relish, guacamole, chopped tomatoes, cheese, lettuce and cream. DELICIOUS! The burrito was like the size of a small baby and I inhaled the whole thing! And here I thought I was only going to eat half of it! They also give you a complimentary side of tortilla chips. The hot sauce was not as spicy as I thought it would be but it packed a lot of flavor. After this very satisfying meal, I needed a shower and a nap. And I mean it in a good way. They seem to get sold out fast so I recommend ordering ahead. Support this new local business and at the same time, make your belly and taste buds happy! win-win!

When they offered to stay open longer to accommodate my party of 2 I was sold. Attitude is everything and Mañana exhibited the right sort of can-do attitude. Nobody seemed concerned about staying a little later than planned and when I ordered a glass of red wine it was delightful to learn that they had a choice of open bottles from which to choose. Besides the alcohol, allI I did here was share a platter of (deliciously satisfying) nachos but between that, the colorful and decorative interior, and the welcome hospitality I have to admit I liked Mañana somewhat better than the place down the street which displayed little of the same. If you find yourself in Montreal and desirous of Mexican fare Mañana proved a welcome surprise, one to which I'd happily return.

The reason for few stars is that the food here is Mexican-like but if you are used to Mexican food you may be disappointed. No refried beans or rice, and the tacos are very weird, I have never seen breaded and fried chicken pieces used for chicken taco meat before. C$93.71 The guacamole is good, not a lot of heat of flavor, but still decent. The Pico de Gallo is good, that's the extent of salsa here. The mortar bowl is filled shallow with avocado, not a lot, but a workable amount. It's C$19 / $13.54 The burrata and quinoa salad is good, different. Creamy and smooth with the avocado. The fried chicken taco is good, better than the fried fish tacos for us both. The black beans are good, just soaked in bean water juice. Refried beans would be a bit better, but still good. The quinoa salad, guacamole and fried chicken tacos are worth a visit. Service is good for sure, friendly and warm.

The steak tacos were pretty good but some of the steak was pretty tough. The chicken tacos were great and probably the best seasoned of the three. The pork tacos were good and the pineapple offered a good contrast. They gave a large bowl of guacamole on the side which was really good and made all the tacos a lot better. They also put fries on top of the tacos, which was a fun addition but ultimately made all the tacos taste too similar. Usually different taco flavours have red onion or cabbage or diced tomatoes as a garnish, but in this case they were just topped with fries so there wasn't enough flavour distinction and all the tacos taste the same after a while. Despite that, you really can't beat the value offered by the taco box so we would certainly be tempted to buy it again when we're craving tacos.

This meal was so bad we actually went to another Mexican restaurant to try and erase the experience. See my review of Lakalaka located on the other end of St Denis.
