I thought of this as "empanada spot," but apparently it has a name!
The menu at this charming hole in the wall includes, in order of focus: empanadas, pizza, sandwiches, salads, pastas... and then some. The baked empanadas are at the forefront, though - literally. Walk in and the display is right in front of you, with 8 available fillings written in fat green cursive on the glass.
In order of deliciousness: beef, caprese, chicken, ham+cheese, veggie, cheese+onion, humita, Roquefort. Each is 10 pesos and not bad - make sure you get them heated thoroughly.
But the fried ones are better (as is always the case!). Still 10 pesos each, they come in only one variety: Rioja-style. This is a northern Argentinian specialty that involves a filling of knife-cut beef and onion with a garlicky, cumin-y edge. Unlike the empanadas al horno, the empanada riojanas are accompanied by a scallion-heavy chimichurri that beats ever other oddly flavorless chimichurri I've had in this city.
Worth a visit? The tiny, eccentrically decorated space is charming and it's an easy spot to stop for a cheap snack. Fried empanadas all the way! read more
