We went with three other couples as part of a larger group for a music festival. The eight of us had four adjacent rooms, so this was convenient for hanging out together in the balcony pool when we weren't involved in larger group activities. We were on the fifth floor, and in the beginning of May with temps in the 80's it was a bit chilly in the pool - very little meaningful sun hits the balcony pools. If I were going to do it over again, I'd opt for a 1st or 6th floor room. All rooms face the ocean.
At the beach and pool, we didn't really have issues getting chairs, and if you'd rather have a bala bed, you can reserve one with your concierge - although some of those were empty and unreserved during the trip as well.
For sunning, I'd recommend the beach over the pool just because there's less noise, and I'd definitely stay away from the concrete deck above the pool bar. It's very hot up there and there's very little breeze. There's plenty of breeze down by the ocean.
The Sensimar side is a much nicer beach, but the water is very shallow on either side. Not really great for swimming. Either side has bar attendants, but we found that it was easier and more efficient to go to the bars on our own rather than wait for servers.
Much has been written about the size of the resort and the golf carts to take you around, but my wife and I (both 56) had no issues walking everywhere we wanted to go. It probably helped work off some calories.
The Driftwood restaurant at the hotel is very convenient, but it's more of a burger joint with bar food than anything else. Good for lunch though if you're hanging out at the pool or the Seaside Suites beach and don't want to go far.
Our favorite breakfasts were at Seaside Market and Culinarium. Seaside Market is a buffet, but there is shaded outdoor seating which (for some reason) most people don't take advantage of. Culinarium is a sit-down with waiter service, and everything we had there was delicious. We also had a breakfast at Arrecifes, which has a buffet both indoors and outdoors. We sat outdoors, but preferred the inside spread.
We had one lunch at the Beach BBQ. This was the least appetizing meal we had. Another buffet, but not much in the way of meat - dark meat chicken and a clam/oyster/mussel mix with pasta. That was a one-and-done.
Our favorite dinner restaurants included Gourmet Pub and La Carreta. La Carreta had some very tasty authetic Mexican dishes. They did bring out to the table a tray of salsas, including peppers. The jalapenos were outstanding. I didn't see the habanero that I picked up though, and it really choked me up. Burning throat, burning eyes, SO good!
The grounds were kept up very nicely, and 90% of the staff was on point, greeting each guest with an enthusiastic "Hola!" Those who didn't were typically groundskeepers or other staff whose jobs didn't involve dealing with the public. Some people are just awkward when it comes to interacting with others. It didn't adversely affect our trip at all.
Speaking of groundskeepers, I will say this about the seaweed - It's abundant, no doubt. However, there are always crews working to clear it, maybe around the clock. I say this because I was up for sunrise a couple of times, and they guys were already out there with their wheelbarrows and pitchforks, picking it up and carting it out to the leeward side of the resort.
The bartenders at most of the bars were very friendly and attentive - the exception being the guy working at the Fourth Floor Bar in the El Dorado Seaside. Even when it wasn't crowded, he was never in a hurry. This was kind of crappy, since we spent parts of three different nights there (there's not a lot of nightlife at this place).
His opposite was Miguel at the pool bar. The guy was full of energy and ALWAYS smiling. Let's just say he got significantly larger tips than the guy upstairs.
My wife had some neck stiffness from our flight down, and on our first day, we were approached by a couple of women from the spa. My wife typically doesn't do massages because she doesn't like the whole concept of being touched by strangers, but I talked her into just a head/neck/shoulders 25-minute session. She loved it, and it may have saved our trip! :)
Housekeeping was reliable and efficient, as was the fridge restocking. No complaints about either.
It's been reported ad nauseum that the rooms get damp. Look out your balcony window. That thing right in front of you is a pool. Beyond that? The ocean. It happens. Set the thermostat to 17 while you're out of the room, and 21 at night, and it won't be an issue.
I enjoy visiting different areas, and I've been to several different places in the Caribbean - only revisiting one resort. In Mexico, while I'd been to Cancun, Cozumel and Playa Mujeres previously, this was my first time at the Riviera Maya. If I were to go back, I wouldn't hesitate to stay once again at the El Dorado. read more
