This was our room. Sadly, that was not our rental vehicle.

Common wisdom suggests that Big Bend visitors must stay at the Chisos Mountain Lodge, but I like uncommon things myself. I thought Terlingua was an even better base - more restaurants, and a ghost-town setting (and getting a sunrise with both the ghost town and the mountains in view? Perfect). And the El Dorado was a great choice. We arrived to a lively scene on Saturday night as a band played. The lady who checked us in was great, and she gave us good breakfast recs. Our room had what we needed (including a fridge). A good night's rest was had by all. We ate at the restaurant one night - there are multiple signs notifying you that there will be a wait, and it was truth in advertising. It was about an hour to get our dinner, as the kitchen seemed to be staffed by one and was served by one. But they do tell you. My enchiladas were pretty good. Overall, were I to return to Big Bend I wouldn't think about lodging and would just book here. It's as good as gold to me.

My family stayed in April 2021. An unpleasant stay. We got Bedbugs and diarrhea,, as souvenirs for no extra charge.

The bathroom and shower are both in separate outhouses but as long as you have flip-flops or slippers that's not really a problem. The area has a lot of tiny cactus needles, though, so bare feet outside can be risky. The house has two queen beds and a futon. The kitchen area has a decent sized fridge, microwave and large sunk with an awkward faucet. The decor is fantastic. If you book here do your best to arrive before 8pm or you could end up sleeping in your car in the parking lot like I did. There is NO after hours contact and they're supposed to leave your room key on the door of the Terlingua Trading Co. but good luck! The manager was very apologetic about the check-in failure, refunded the night and heavily discounted the remainder of my stay.

It's a little bit of a steep hill going back up to the hotel but we did it in the dark with our two year old and me being pregnant just fine. Loved the patio with the sound of the fountain running in the back. Beds were clean, towels and small toiletries were provided. Enough for two people for one or two nights. Maybe bring your own shampoo/soap for more people or more nights. Beds were comfy. The bathroom was huge with a a rain shower. Liked the bathrobes inside the bathroom for guests. We had one small issue while we were there but they were very responsive and helped us out. Great service. Great location. Great stay. Will be back soon.

In kitchen there's a table and mini fridge, and limited amenities in the cupboards (dish soap, sponge, rags, only a few plates, few cups, silverware, knives, microwave, etc). Any cooking should be done outside on the grills. Outside there's also an ice machine, lawn games (corn hole, giant jenga), as well as a fire pit (closed in summer), hot tub (closed in summer) and pool. The grounds are well kept with gardens and a variety of plants. There's also a coffee shop onsite that serves a variety of drinks and a few food items. Grateful for the free wifi because my Verizon phone had 0 service here or at the park. AT&T had good service though. Stargazing: Beside the annoyingly bright streetlight at the white house on the adjacent property, it's very dark here and we saw more stars here than at home. Sunset and sunrise were both beautiful here too. Awesome location, just a short drive from Big Bend National Park! There's also as a small grocery store (Cottonwood), gas station (Alon), and a few restaurants within a short drive. There's even a liquor store next to the property that has beer, wine, liquors and more! Friendly service too. Truly an excellent place to stay!

The views from the outdoor daybed and the patio couch are AMAZING. We even decided to stay home one day rather than venture into the park, because we enjoyed relaxing there so much. I was worried about having to get ready for our elopement ceremony in the little bathroom, but it was so cozy and absolutely perfect. When we got back to the room after eloping/taking pictures, Cynta had decorated the room with flowers, towel swans and prosecco. I was absolutely not expecting anything like that and it was really touching that she went out of her way to do something special for us on our day. Cynta is an absolute angel! We also loved being able to walk to the Starlight Theatre for dinner! I could literally go on and on about the perks of this place. We can't wait to visit again soon and stay in the Main House with our family!

While we were on our visit the restaurant that's on site was closed but I'm assuming that was a temporary thing. Honestly, I find myself somewhere in between a good review and a bad review. Nothing great and . . . we felt it was WAY over priced for what you get. There are other options in the area that are much nicer and similarly priced if you can reserve those. Do your research, look around and plan ahead. Thankfully we had a room with two queen beds -- which were comfortable -- and we used both because the top sheets were twin size and didn't even cover the entire top of the mattress. It was clean . . . as much as possible in such a dusty, dry climate. These units have supposedly been recently refurbished, but they need to pay a bit more attention to details (like the sheets) if charging this much. A rug or two to wipe dust from our feet before entering would have been helpful. The sink was new and nice, but the toilet was tiny, low to the floor and old with a big water tank and it flushed really sloowww. No excuse for that these days. Get nicer, more efficient toilets! People available to help or answer questions were scarce and food options not very forthcoming. There are a few places to go for dinner and/or coffee (4-6 miles away), but not a lot of options. Just know that this is a pretty bare bones facility in a pretty bare bones west Texas town . . . Bottom line, if you can't find anything else and don't mind 'semi' roughing it for a few days, you'll be fine. On the other hand, if you expect more for your $275/night, then you're probably not going to like this place.

I have been traveling the world for over 30 years and have stayed in hundreds of budget…read moreaccommodations across four continents, including in developing countries. With that experience, I can honestly say this is the most "budget" place I have ever stayed at -- but unfortunately not in a positive sense. The room was extremely basic: two beds (one of them broken), a TV, a fire extinguisher (!), a sink, and a barely functioning toilet. That was essentially the entire furnishing. The windows were kept shut with wooden sticks, and the front door was so poorly fitted that it repeatedly blew open during the night, even when locked. The most serious issue, however, was cleanliness. There was a strong, persistent smell throughout the property -- a mix of damp basement and chemicals -- which caused us allergic reactions and remained in our clothes even weeks later, despite multiple washes. The room appeared not to have been properly cleaned for a long time, and we found several dead insects. After leaving, we also noticed live insects in our luggage, which we had not experienced before this stay. Unfortunately, the staff did not improve the experience. We did not feel welcome and there was no sense of hospitality. Interactions were distant and uninterested, and at times downright uncomfortable. There was no apparent willingness to assist or make our stay more pleasant, which is disappointing, as smiles and good service can often compensate for limited facilities. By contrast, one of my best stays ever was actually in a sleeping bag on a mat in a cave in the Tunisian desert, where it was the hosts, not the facilities, who made the experience truly memorable. We prepaid for a long stay, but after just one night, we decided to leave. Rather than returning, we chose to spend the rest of our vacation sleeping in our small rental car, which felt like the better, safer, and cleaner option. That decision probably says it all.

I've been home for 2 days and haven't slept the same. Also, they are $100 pillows so they aren't skimping on comfort -Decor is cute and goes with the surroundings -Can we talk about the outdoor shower and tub??? -Sitting area is nice- we didn't have a need for the pull out sofa but it was great to sit and play games somewhere other than the bed -Soap/shampoo/conditioner smells amazing! -COVID STUFF: they provide a couple of face masks and a bin of wipes. This was a big plus of us! -Lots of coffee options with sugar options & creamer (to go cups and mugs) -Filtered drinking water provided! -The fire pit was in-ground which was awesome because we were able to use it to cook in dead of summer without burning alive. There wasn't a day without a breeze coming up the hill which helps as well! -Quick drive to Terlingua Ghost Town, about 20 mins from Lajitas. Other things close by like a liquor store, gas station, etc. -NO TV- a definite plus in this environment! CONS: -I was initially disappointed when we pulled up- this is close to the highway. Not so close that you lose much privacy, but in my mind I thought it was gonna be set further off from a main hwy, or that the pull in would be behind the house so you had an uninterrupted view of the desert/mountains -This particular house had 2 shipping containers and what seems like the beginnings of a construction effort right out front. We weren't disturbed by any noise, and the workers were gone by 4-5 each day so it was fine, but again it was the expectation v reality thing -Power lines are part of your view (they run along the hwy) -The fridge is the size of a normal small hotel fridge which was a con for us because we had to keep refilling the cooler with ice which required a trip to the store. I'd keep cold groceries to a min if you're staying a few days. Overall, this place should probably get 5 stars given the price point (worth every penny of $200/nt), but I do think it's important to call out that it's not alone in an expansive space without any disruption. You don't feel "alone". However, we enjoyed every moment, from playing blackjack in the sitting room, to snuggling in the comfy bed, showering in the open air (with ample privacy), cooking over fire, Star-gazing, painting the vista, etc. We will definitely return, and will likely book Casa Juni which was the first casa on the hwy and seemed to have the best view. Go and enjoy!
