I hate to write a great review and run the risk of NOT finding lodging on my next trip. I read the low reviews after I made reservations BUT I also saw that it had a new owner. I was solo so I had a room with one king size bed in a newly renovated motel. It was perfect for me ! The room was very clean. I enjoyed walking around at sunset taking photos. The staff was very friendly. Cost was middle of the road considering they were kicking off their busy time of year. Big Bend area is crazy starting Nov 1st or so. My only pick was a lack of a broom to sweep up the small rocks I tracked in while walking around outside. I know most people would never think of sweeping a motel while on vacation BUT not me. It's worse stepping on one of those small rocks while barefooted. I will definitely make reservations here for my next trip. Plus, my wife would approve of it.

Standard room in the Motor Inn Guest Rooms section of Big Bend Resorts and Adventures

There are three different sections under this brand name that are managed by the same company (who has contracted with the National Parks Service). They are the Motor Inn Guest Rooms, The Mission Lodge, and the RV Park and Campground. My review is for the Motor Inn Guest Rooms. It's not the fanciest hotel/motel in the world, but remember where you are for crying out loud. It's better than sleeping in a tent out on the desert floor - TRUST me! This is one of the closest hotels located outside of Big Bend National Park, and I used it as my first night destination because of my late arrival. It's located about 28 miles away from the Chisos Basin Visitor Center within the park, so it's a short drive to get your hike on! (if you are checking in past 9PM, let them know ahead of time so you can make arrangements to get your keys) The rooms are very dated, but clean, with good air conditioning, and very hot water. There's a gas station located literally next door, along with a convenience store and a small cafe for breakfast or lunch. Right across the street, is the Terlingua Ghost Town, with a couple of dining choices and some really cool watering holes at which you can whet your whistle. Very friendly staff, and I would stay here again. Just don't expect anything fancy and updated - you're in Terlingua after all. Everything in Terlingua is going to be similar - there aren't many choices. When I headed out here, I was expecting zero cell signal - but I actually got a decent 3G signal in most parts of the small town.

If you want to stay in the worst hotel in Big Bend, this place is for you! The first room featured bed bugs, sheets that didn't fit, and no mattress cover. The second room offered had a big strand of black hair on the sheets and bugs on the mattress. And the third room featured a hairy guy sleeping the bed who woke and told me I had the wrong room (although the key fit and the room number on the key fob matched). This was such a great start to my first Big Bend trip. I can't recommend this hotel enough -- especially if you are a terrible person who has done terrible things to people throughout your entire life. The pictures tell the tale. Check them out.

I've been staying at this hotel every trip for the last 10 years. Its cheap, convenient, and for the most part a clean place to stay in. My trip there in March of 2023 was by far the worst experience I've had in those 10 years. Traveling with a friend, I booked 2 single bed rooms (1 for each of us). I tried booking the room through their website but there was none showing available. After a 30 min wait to the call center for booking I got both rooms finally booked and was charged a deposit of $307.36 for both rooms. We arrived on March 23rd at 4pm, got checked, charged the remaining balance for each room ($307.36 x 2) in and went to our room. First room smelled musty and a little humid. We pulled the blanket over there was what at first looked like bed bugs on the sheets, but after inspection it was black debris all over the bed. sheets were not by any means clean so we went back and requested a new room. Got the keys to another room, walked in, pulled the sheets back, and not only was there the same black debris all over the sheets there was also human hair covering the entire sheet as if it was not even changed (pics below). The mattress below the sheets was also filthy. Went back to the front and requested another room hoping 3rd time was the charm. Got the keys to another room, walked in, there was a guest sleeping in the bed. The person woke up, told us we were in the wrong room so we apologized and left. Went back to the front office and requested a cancellation and a full refund. They apologized and gave me two pieces of paper with what appears to be a refund on each piece for each individual room. We searched around and found 2 clean rooms at CHISOS MINING LODGE 1/4 mile down the road. Rooms were clean, sheets were clean, and it was considerably cheaper than this place. Once home, I called the hotel on Thursday, March 30th because the refund amount had not shown up on my credit card. I was told they didn't know and I needed to call "Central". I called their central booking and was on the phone for 26 minutes with the person on the other line apologizing and telling me I'd hear back the same day from someone ensuring me some answer on my refund. Nobody called. I called back on Monday, April 3rd and was told the same thing but was transferred to someone else who promised me I'd get a call back within 72 hours. That call was 47 minutes... and nobody called back!!! As of today (4/20/23) I still don't have my refund of $922.08 from Aramark who runs the property and I've had to dispute the amount with my credit card in hopes of getting my money back. Needless to say, I won't be staying at this place anymore after this experience and will definitely not be recommending it for anyone who travels to the region. There's better options popping up everywhere around the area and this place has a long way to go before catching up to any of the other options around. EDIT: After 40 days, i finally have my refund. It only took 3 calls to them over those 40 days and finally being told it was up to the hotel to give me a refund when the hotel was the one originally telling me that 'Central' was responsible.

    Spacious and quaint.

Great location and comfortable digs. It's not the Ritz, and has limited TV channels, but there's no need for that, given the great outdoors just steps away. Could use a renovation in some spots, but it's clean, quiet and the staff is nice. Nice straight shot to either Big Bend National Park or Alpine. View are comparable to Sedona, AZ, in some respects, but at 1/5 the cost.

This place is bad. Really bad. There are a few caveats to consider, sure. This place is almost the closest accommodation just outside the park. There's not a lot of competition. And you've come all this way to visit a national park, you probably weren't planning to spend a lot of time here. But when you consider how much you're paying for this place and what you're actually getting, it becomes quickly apparent that not only is this place bad, it's unnecessarily bad. I'll try to let the pictures mostly speak for themselves. I've stayed in hotels and Air BnB all over, but this by far is the worst. It clearly has not been updated in decades. It looks like a college dorm. But not a good college dorm, more like the local community college where that guy who used to sell you weed sophomore year lived. In. 1989. And the tv. That horrible tv. We paid $200 a night to state here for four nights. I just googled it; you can buy a 40 in. flat screen from Walmart for $99. Right. Now. Instead, for. $800 you get a 33 in. throw back to 1999. I think I literally had this same big box tv in my first apartment. Appalling aesthetic choices aside, the customer service is deplorable. I had to wait for "Raul" to come back from the store before I could get a key to our place. They did ask me if I wouldn't mind waiting, but having driven hours through the desert, I clearly had no place else to go. Trash bags from the cleaning service were left in our room that we had to dispose of. Toilet would not flush. In the end, I would have been okay with this place if it had not charged so much. If the charges had been fair, that would have been one thing. But in the end I simply felt that someone was taking advantage of me. Buyer beware.

I took my parents for their first time (I camped all other times w friends) and we stayed in El Patron - me on the couch and they took the bed. The mansion up the road looked awesome from the outside and looked to have a stellar view. With an AC/heater, nice bathroom, microwave, dining room table for 4, fold out couch bed, and opening the door to see the mountains at the National Park...we couldn't ask for much more. The starlight theatre & restaurant is next door, as well as a coffee house, and a small merchants market. Go by any time of the day and have a drink with the locals on the porch. The property is littered with old houses that are now just piles of stone, as well as a nice hill in the back with a good view. Go up there at night and you can see every star in the sky. The bathroom and shower are both in separate outhouses but as long as you have flip-flops or slippers that's not really a problem. The kitchen area has a decent sized fridge, microwave and large sunk with an awkward faucet. The decor is fantastic. If you book here do your best to arrive before 8pm or you could end up sleeping in your car in the parking lot like I did. There is NO after hours contact and they're supposed to leave your room key on the door of the Terlingua Trading Co. but good luck! The manager was very apologetic about the check-in failure, refunded the night and heavily discounted the remainder of my stay.

It reminded me of some of the poorly maintained Brooklyn AirBnBs that I've stayed in. Owner repaired DIY property and done very poorly. I do understand Terlingua is in the middle of nowhere but there are standards. The good: It's super close to Big Bend and there is a small deck patio for room 16. The cafe on site was decent and the food was surprisingly good. A lot of items on the menu were not available due to the Spring Break crazyness which was consistent everywhere. SHOUTOUT TO KYLE WHO IS ONE OF THE WAITERS. KYLE IS THE BEST THING TO EVER HAPPEN TO THE EL DORADO HOTEL AND SHOULD BE PUT IN CHARGE. I added one star for his awesomeness. The bad: Everything.... Upon arrival the girl in charge checked us in and was nice. However she kept doing to opposite of what she said she would do or per our requests. Example: Can we get two bath towels? Result: Two blankets delivered. The room has a large Jacuzzi tub that was out of order. Dirty and tiles all around the tub had either fallen off and placed in the tub or were about to fall off. Thankfully the shower worked and the knob to turn the water on had been replaced with a golf ball. No lie. The tile floor had broken tiles all over the room. My son cut is foot on one on day two. There were so many that the owners simply put an area rug over to cover part of the problem. For reference, the tile installed on the floor is wall tile and not floor tile so no surprise it broke. The vanity sink was interesting and was on a raised platform. It creaked with each step and felt like it was going to give way at any moment. One afternoon, the WATER randomly TURNED OFF. Girl in charge had no idea and it took an hour to get it back on. Apparently it was being worked on but they just didn't bother to tell anyone. Let's not forget that the bathroom has a double shower curtain for a door. I hope your family and or friends are okay with listening to you go to the bathroom. In short, this place could be really cool but the owners lack of effort in keeping the place in at least a Motel 6 level of quality just kills it. Owner suggestion: Demo the jacuzzi tub and wall off the shower and toilet. Paint and replace floor with vinyl LVT.

With that experience, I can honestly say this is the most "budget" place I have ever stayed at -- but unfortunately not in a positive sense. The room was extremely basic: two beds (one of them broken), a TV, a fire extinguisher (!), a sink, and a barely functioning toilet. That was essentially the entire furnishing. The windows were kept shut with wooden sticks, and the front door was so poorly fitted that it repeatedly blew open during the night, even when locked. The most serious issue, however, was cleanliness. There was a strong, persistent smell throughout the property -- a mix of damp basement and chemicals -- which caused us allergic reactions and remained in our clothes even weeks later, despite multiple washes. The room appeared not to have been properly cleaned for a long time, and we found several dead insects. After leaving, we also noticed live insects in our luggage, which we had not experienced before this stay. Unfortunately, the staff did not improve the experience. We did not feel welcome and there was no sense of hospitality. Interactions were distant and uninterested, and at times downright uncomfortable. There was no apparent willingness to assist or make our stay more pleasant, which is disappointing, as smiles and good service can often compensate for limited facilities. By contrast, one of my best stays ever was actually in a sleeping bag on a mat in a cave in the Tunisian desert, where it was the hosts, not the facilities, who made the experience truly memorable. We prepaid for a long stay, but after just one night, we decided to leave. Rather than returning, we chose to spend the rest of our vacation sleeping in our small rental car, which felt like the better, safer, and cleaner option. That decision probably says it all.

I've been home for 2 days and haven't slept the same. Also, they are $100 pillows so they aren't skimping on comfort -Decor is cute and goes with the surroundings -Can we talk about the outdoor shower and tub??? -Sitting area is nice- we didn't have a need for the pull out sofa but it was great to sit and play games somewhere other than the bed -Soap/shampoo/conditioner smells amazing! -COVID STUFF: they provide a couple of face masks and a bin of wipes. This was a big plus of us! -Lots of coffee options with sugar options & creamer (to go cups and mugs) -Filtered drinking water provided! -The fire pit was in-ground which was awesome because we were able to use it to cook in dead of summer without burning alive. There wasn't a day without a breeze coming up the hill which helps as well! -Quick drive to Terlingua Ghost Town, about 20 mins from Lajitas. Other things close by like a liquor store, gas station, etc. -NO TV- a definite plus in this environment! CONS: -I was initially disappointed when we pulled up- this is close to the highway. Not so close that you lose much privacy, but in my mind I thought it was gonna be set further off from a main hwy, or that the pull in would be behind the house so you had an uninterrupted view of the desert/mountains -This particular house had 2 shipping containers and what seems like the beginnings of a construction effort right out front. We weren't disturbed by any noise, and the workers were gone by 4-5 each day so it was fine, but again it was the expectation v reality thing -Power lines are part of your view (they run along the hwy) -The fridge is the size of a normal small hotel fridge which was a con for us because we had to keep refilling the cooler with ice which required a trip to the store. I'd keep cold groceries to a min if you're staying a few days. Overall, this place should probably get 5 stars given the price point (worth every penny of $200/nt), but I do think it's important to call out that it's not alone in an expansive space without any disruption. You don't feel "alone". However, we enjoyed every moment, from playing blackjack in the sitting room, to snuggling in the comfy bed, showering in the open air (with ample privacy), cooking over fire, Star-gazing, painting the vista, etc. We will definitely return, and will likely book Casa Juni which was the first casa on the hwy and seemed to have the best view. Go and enjoy!
