My mother and I stopped by on a road trip. I am originally from Texas and was really looking forward to good Tex mex. We stopped here to eat and the place looked closed , the sign was off. The server was very nice, but she was the only one on the floor and was overworked. For the food:The salsa was very mild and the tortillas were NOT homemade, the shrimp had been frozen in the enchiladas and the beans tasted like they were out of a can. The staff is so sweet, and the portions are generous. That's the extent of the praise I can extend to this place. I'm from South Texas so maybe I hold this Tex Mex to too high a standard. The menu is so far-flung from what Tex-Amex is. I've never seen a more confused and white-washed menu at a Tex Mex restaurant. It almost tastes like high school cafeteria Mexican food. The guacamole on my plate was turning brown, and did not taste homemade at all. Same goes for the tortillas. What self-respecting Tex Mex restaurant does not make its own tortillas? The woman seemed attentive to every other table but ours. She would bring a plate with all our chips and salsa, set it on the table and just go to a different table. We could have just been starved and thought them to be better than they were, but they weren't awful. My fajitas were okay, I had a side of cold rice and expired brown guacamole. The fajitas were green peppers and onions, no color added. The chicken was end of the day rotisserie chicken you get from Walmart or the dollar tree. My boyfriends dad got the chimichanga which looked more like Chinese spring rolls than an authentic chimichanga. The two others got the taco salad, a big tortilla bowl with "salad" inside. They had the same to say about the meat, or what there was of it (hardly any.) the salad was iceberg lettuce and an attempt to look pleasing. Lunch special: Enchilada and a taco with rice and beans for $8.59 and I got an ice tea $1.99...total $11.45. I got chicken with sour cream sauce - just for reference it's literally not spicy at all, I think it's sour cream and some other spices, but no jalapeños or anything spicy. I got the beef crunchy taco. My personal preference: Definitely do ask for some Pico de Gallo (and lime)for both, when it comes out, adds tons of fresh yummy flavor! (I just picked out the jalepeño parts so it wasn't spicy) Overall, I didn't leave hungry and was happy the pico de gallo brought the shine for me in particular... if there's a next time I might try the street tacos, I hear they're off the menu and good. Honestly you don't have much choice in Hillsboro for a big group. We were there for a family get together and it is one of the few places with a banquet room that we all new. Most of us have been eating here since we were little kids and now we are in our late 30's. The waitress did a good job getting everyone's order and making sure the drinks were full. We had the fajitas and they were good, but the odd thing was that the sides came out way before the fajita meat. Not sure if that is normal or just because it was a group. Good place to eat. You could really sense the family atmosphere. I highly recommend the top shelf margarita. It's probably the best margarita I've had in a long time. When driving to Austin from Dallas, I was worried that I couldn't find a good eating place, but lo and behold, my girlfriend wisely chose this place amidst a sea of corporate chains and we were definitely pleased. They had a reasonable dinner special of two enchiladas with chile con carne and rice and beans for 5.99. Can't beat that for Hillsboro. Aside from the price, the food was amazing and authentic. The enchilada sauce was spicy and rich with flavor, and the cheese inside the enchiladas reminded me of the best restaurants in San Diego. You won't be disappointed with this place. read more
