We decided to come on a Saturday night and got seated right away. Immediately, chips and salsa were delivered to our table. The chips came out hot and so fresh, I couldn't stop eating them. The server gave awesome recommendations, it was hard to make a decision. I decided to try out the carnitas plate which comes with beans, rice, and guac! Good Margaritas but the food is not great. We have been in several times and I always hope the next time is going to be better than the last. This time I ordered mole enchiladas. What they brought me was 2 corn tortilla soft tacos on their side, with mole sauce on top and no cheese! I was so annoyed but I didn't say anything because we were with other people so I just had my drink with some chips/salsa. Where do I begin? Did I expect the best service I've ever received? Absolutely not, but did I expect to walk out with the worst service ever? Also, no, but I did. We came here only cause it was close to home and we didn't want to drive far. So many things wrong here. The plates were dirty, the waitress was not attentive and kinda rude - I think she spoke maybe 10 words to us. The person that was bringing out food and drinks walked around to each table saying "did you guys order this?" with someone else's food, at least 3x. I went to the Anaheim Hills location. Do not come here expecting it to be anything remotely close to El Cholos in LA. The food was terrible. Nothing authentic about it. Whatever cheese they put on their food taste sour. I literally ate a couple bites and threw away the entire plate. I asked the server who stated it was because of covid... basically she stated that they were making up for lost revenue. So the business plan is this. Finally found a Mexican restaurant in California that has Sonoran style food. The green corn tamales were delicious and authentic, steamed and served in the husk. They have real Sonoran enchiladas too! Definitely will eat here again even though its a two hour drive from where I live. Didn't like the rice. read more

I wanted a Mexican breakfast / which they don't have BUT they makes this chicken enchilada with red and green sauce and a fried egg over ... OMG it's a signature dish!!! I went back again and took some family and even better everyone loved it! This is a legit Mexican spot! There are various Mexican food styles and flavours - this place is the real deal . I'm glad we found this place. Were acutally introduced to the original location in CDM, but are closer to this location and come here on a semi regular basis. Not the traditional mexican food you get elsewhere. Food is really good. Haven't made a bad choice yet. Prices are typical for what you get. Portions though are on the smaller side than some other places, but you will be satisfied. Even when they are really busy, it doesn't feel crowded. The food and service have gone down drastically since Chef Roberto left the company a few years back. Chips and salsa: Stale Chips and Super Watery Salsa Sonora Style Nachos: Mediocre and wouldn't order again - didn't seem fresh enough. For the price - a meat option should have been included and not a la carte. Tre's Tacos Al Carbon: The beans were tasty with the hint of garlic but the Taco's themselves were not that great. Wife didn't eat any of them. Chicken Chimichanga's - Disappointed because they were more like Rolled Cheese Taco's than "Chicken", they were not what I was expecting. The beans and rice were tasty. Maybe the place was "too authentic" for the two of us, so this is not a place that I will return to. The service was good. read more

Firstly, the good. The food is delicious. We had the fajitas, tortilla soup, chicken taquitos, and a combination plate with a chile relleno and rolled beef taco. The flavors were on point and, paired with a Corona, it was some of the best Mexican food I've had in the area. Now on to the bad. One word: service. There were few groups seated and eating already, and about the same amount of tables in use were left dirty with plates and glasses. Okay, I think, they're probably from groups that just left. No problem, I work in a restaurant myself I know sometimes you can't bus a table immediately. We walk up to the host stand and the manager is talking to a group that we learned after a few minutes has already paid. The host waits patiently until he has to speak over and around his manager to ask us how many in our party. He goes to check table availability (or tell the busser to clean a table for us, more likely), and the manager is still chatting away and ignoring us. Host comes back, tells us it'll be a minute, and all the while he still has to speak over another conversation. Eventually the other party left and we're standing around with a manager who clearly doesn't care for our presence simply ignoring us entirely. Very uncomfortable. We were seated with no issue. Every other group in the restaurant is already in the middle of their meals so I figure it should be no time until we get our orders taken. After a minute, a server comes along and asks us for our drink orders, bringing chips and salsa. Business as usual. We ask for a heater to be turned on and give our drink orders. Ten minutes later, we ask someone else to turn on the heater and another server comes by and asks if our drink orders have been taken. Few more minutes pass, and just as we're debating leaving, someone turns on the heater. Few minutes after, we get our drinks. Then we sit for another ten minutes waiting to give our order. In the meanwhile, two groups that were there when we arrived left, and every table that was dirty when we got there was still uncleaned, and nobody new has been sat. There are now three groups in the restaurant, including us, and we're the only ones not eating. Not a server in sight. Eventually, after another debate over leaving money for our drinks and escaping from service limbo, we're finally asked for our order. She took our orders and went, and we were just hoping the food was good enough to make up for the service being so shoddy. It was very good food, as stated above. Took a good five minutes to flag down a server to get the check when we were done eating, though. And by the time we left, all the tables were still as dirty as when we showed up. Reserve a table in advance if you want to come here for the excellent food, and make sure you've got plenty to keep you occupied while waiting for service. read more

I stopped to eat at El Cholo 8200 E. Santa Ana Canyon Rd. in Anaheim Hills. I read some of the Yelp reviews, so I decided to try there food. It's a very large and beautiful restaurant with a few rooms but had that open feel and a large banquet room. Israel my server was super nice & friendly and made sure mi ice tea glass was full. Appetizer: I ordered: Carmen's Original Nachos, a very large plate of corn chips with lots of yellow cheese and sides of sliced jalapenos & a small bowl of salsa. It was hot, crunchy, and very tasty. I also had chips & salsa that was complementary. Entrée: I ordered: The taste of History Combo Platter; A Cheese Enchilada. one; Rolled Beef Taco. one; Chile Relleno. one; Pork Tamal. included; Spanish rice & refried beans also; quacamole and salsa. A great combination of flavors. I drank an ice tea to balance my meal. Dessert: I had; Fried Ice Cream; fried vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, raspberry, and chocolate sauce. It was delicious. The service was so bad tonight we walked out and drove down to Rodrigo's for drinks and dinner. Scenario: We sat at the bar (Not cleaned from the previous customers) for 12 minutes without even being acknowledged, all whilst the bartender that should have been serving us was busy by the register fiddling with his tip jar. Bad customer service across the board - even an acknowledgment by staff would have made a difference. I'm tired of the "Post-pandemic" excuses for poor customer service. We were and have tried to be " Regulars" here, dining at least twice + per month, but post-pandemic, this place has really tanked across-the-board on customer service unfortunately , and quite unapologetically about it. read more

This review is about the Anaheim Hills location. I am writing this review from El Torito where I am enjoying a margaritas and a combination. Why am I writing from here? Three other couples shown the door at 8:30pm at El Cholo found their way to El Torito. We like them both but like to change it up. I believe El Cholo's hours are wrong on the internet. The posted hours are 9pm so if you arrive at 9pm they should seat you and serve you. If you are seated at 8:30pm, then a server tells you they are closed it means they started closing at 8:00pm. If you are already heading to El Torito, you can't go wrong. If you are headed to El Cholo at 8:00pm, then don't waste your time. There is another great choice a few minutes away. read more

Went into El Cholo for some dinner. We parked in the lot that is shared by BJs to the west. The parking here at dinner time can be a bit of a challenge. If you have been here in the evening you know what I am talking about. The parking can be way out in the back 90.... A long walk in the dark to the front door. The lighting can use a little upgrade to insure customers can see walking to and from the front door. We went in and were met at the front by a server who sat us in the main room. The table was clean and large for just 2 people. After a short wait our server came over and took our drink order. We got chips and salsa while we waited. We also ordered food. Our drinks came out fairly quick. We enjoyed them until our food arrived. The food came out hot and looked great. The order was prepared properly as we requested. We did enjoy the evening here and can't wait to go back. The food is good and the service is ok. The place is clean and the tables are nice. The place does get loud at times. We were right near the bar area so maybe that was where all the noise came from. It was loud there. We could barley hear each other talk. I would recommend sitting as far from the bar area as you can if you want to talk and hear the person sitting next to you. 3 stars for just ok. I would recommend this place to everyone for a good meal at a fair price. The drink prices are good during happy hour. The food prices were ok. read more

They kept the water glasses filled, they made sure we had everything we needed- wow they did not try and rush us out after eating. Tonight we had dinner and unfortunately the service was extremely disappointing. The waitress seemed to be intoxicated. She was slurring her words and made mistakes with our drink order. Met a friend here for a Christmas lunch. My meal was good was a little pricey. The restaurant is beautifully decorated for Christmas. The service was acceptable, our waitress got one of our orders wrong but we didn't bring to her attention. I would recommend for a special lunch, not necessarily on a regular basis. I've always wanted to visit El Cholo and never realized there were multiple locations. Was excited to celebrate my Godson's basketball game victory at the Anaheim Hills location. (shout out to JC for scoring 18 points!) I absolutely love the menu! So simple and the year the dish was created, is listed next to each menu item. I had the 2 item combo with a beef taco and cheese enchilada, which was very authentic and flavorful. The beans were good and the rice was great! The coconut margarita is tasty, but I'm not sure if any tequila was added, couldn't taste any hints of liquor. Chips and salsa were good, as well. Service was good and parking was a breeze. This restaurant opened a couple months ago and we avoided going right away so they could work out the kinks. We had read about bad service and long waits and we were hoping that would not be an issue when we visited. We showed up a little after 6pm on Friday and the parking lot was full, we started talking about where else we should go since we figured we were looking at a long wait. Surprise, surprise, they were able to seat us right away. In fact, almost half the restaurant was empty. Perhaps all the cars filling up the lot were for BJ's next door? They really opened this place up and made a lot more seating areas then how it was when Chevy's was here. The bar was also more open, and it just looks nicer. Our server was over right away, super cool guy, a bit overenthusiastic, but nice. He told me about some Mango Coconut Margarita, and even though I hadn't planned on drinking, I ordered one. It was awesome!! Very creamy and sweet, I will totally come back to order that margarita again. BF got some beer on tap, he liked it. The chips and salsa were tasty, the salsa was pretty spicy. We enjoyed it. For dinner I ordered A Taste of History Plate. It comes with rice & beans, a beef rolled taco, cheese enchilada, chile rellano, and a pork tamale. BF ordered some carne asada tacos with bacon and pickled onions. His tacos were awesome! I so should have ordered those. The beef was tender and juicy, and the bacon and pickled onions paired wonderfully with the marinade. My food was underwhelming. The rice and beans were pretty much flavorless. The cheese enchilada didn't seem fresh, kind of hard. The pork in the tamale was dry and the sauce served with it had a bitter/burnt taste. The chile rellano was good, but almost all egg. It was perfectly round, maybe four inches in diameter, with a small 1x1 inch piece of chile in the middle. The egg was fluffy and flavorful, but it needed more chile. The hand rolled taco was delicious, but it was TINY, literally two bites and it was gone. We will come back. I loved that margarita and his tacos were super good. I think I will try different tacos that they offer, maybe see if they have a plate of those little hand rolled ones. People at the table next to us had fajitas and they looked and smelled really good, perhaps I just ordered the wrong thing last night. read more
