The new owner has a racist manager who has run off all the best servers and hired disgruntled people who have zero food handling safety in action ever. 2nd start because the server we had was so nice. Let's start by saying the food is pretty good. 3 stars max. But that was over shadowed by the smell of feces coming from the wall/cushion. My wife and daughter both noticed it. The server moved us 2 booths over. Nobody cleaned up the booth area... and less than 5 minutes later they sat another family at the booth. A few minutes went by and THEY complained about a fecal smell as well... and moved to another booth. And still, 40 minutes later, nobody has come to remove the cushions and clean. read more

I don't have a complaint! Service was great (she was a host and waitress!). Chips and salsa were good; chips are light and airy and just enough salt. Enchiladas were yummy! My friend got the avocado enchilada (which by the way, the avo is not warm inside) and the brisket enchilada was exactly what I wanted! A lil bit of BBQ and a lil bit of Mexican, you know? Just finished eating at El Chico with my family and was pleasantly supposed how good it was. Nick was our server and he did a phenomenal job serving us. He made sure the food was right, refills were always there, and that it was one of a kind service. Also, he made sure we got the sizzling apple pie which was the tastiest part of the meal. Haven't been here for years. Used to love the cheese enchiladas with onions. Loved their salsa and chips. Waitresses were great. OH, how this has changed. My cheese enchiladas had no cheese. Only a ton of onions. I mean stuffed with onions, but no cheese. Salsa still good, chips good. Waitress friendly, but never brought my salad, no tea refills and never stopped at our table again, even though walked by 4 times. Had to call her over to get check. Last week my fiancé and I went El Chico's. I ordered the combo fajitas which the menu listed at 17.29. I also will add that I ordered table side guacamole. I believe it was 8.99. When I received the bill, I was charged 18.08 for my fajitas. My server told me it was for extra cheese and guacamole. I didn't order either and she never asked. She said the .79 fee is added to all fajitas. Seriously? Is this truly their policy on a corporate level or just at this store. I feel this is not right. I realize .79 is a small amount. The principle of just adding a fee is gouging. Plain and simple. Their menu clearly states a .79 charge for extra cheese and guacamole. I had a whole bowl of guacamole and I never ate the cheese. My bill was over 45.00 and I still tipped 20%. I am not tight. The server removed the .79 charge but it left a very bad taste in my mouth. I attempted to contact management but all I got was a canned response. I will not be back to this or any other El Chico's. read more

I definitely recommend sitting in the bar area versus the restaurant. Something about the bar area doesn't remind me that I'm in a chain restaurant eating mass-produced food made by cooks looking at a color printout of what each plate should look like. My parents and I sat down around 1:30pm for a late lunch and were greeted almost immediately by the bartender working the room. The queso was better than I remembered and rivals my all-time favorite at Cafe Gecko in Dallas. They know what they're doing in this department. The chips were sturdier this time around so they must have made some changes recently. Our bar waitress was efficient, friendly and even remembered to remind me to order Kevin's to go plate (he was at home and couldn't separate himself from his computer). The food came out exactly as we had ordered and better than I expected. I ordered the chicken, spinach and mushroom enchiladas. The mushrooms were surprisingly fresh (not the rubbery canned kind) and the 'chiladas were busting with nicely cooked chicken. Would I eat it regularly if I were in Dallas? Absolutely not. But there are only so many restaurants in the Big G, and El Chico is a solid chain standby. read more

This is a chain so expectations weren't high to begin with. Seated fast, margaritas a tad sweet but good. Food passable. But watch out for their happy hour policies. Only applies to their smallest drinks but they won't tell you that until you see the tab and ask about it. Had their carnitas tacos. Usually portions are huge so just ordered two. What showed up amounted to postage stamps. Yes it was a buck cheaper than what my wife ordered, but she got nearly 3 times more food. Whoa... Last time I came here, I didn't care much for the food, but the service was fine and the food was prepared as well as one would expect. Fast forward a couple of years and that is no longer the case. Joined my group a few minutes late. Waitress took drink order right away, but wouldn't bring drinks until we ordered food. That set the tone for the rest of the meal. Only two little bowls of tortilla chips for a table of 8 means they didn't last long. They were refilled just before the food came out. I ordered carne asada and cheese enchiladas with a salsa Verde sauce. The steak was like leather, the enchiladas were OK, but the sauce was horrible. Lots of heat but no flavor. Blegh. The rest of the table was hit or miss. The simple orders (quesadillas) seemed to be OK. So, the one thing I remembered being good was the Apple pie with cinnamon ice cream served on a hot skillet with a bourbon sauce poured over it. Delish! The whole time I was choking down my meal, I was looking forward to dessert. Waitress brings it out, pours the sauce, which starts steaming and bubbling as it hits the hot platter, the aroma wafting towards me. I couldn't wait. She sets it in front of me. It's a bit firm to get a bite on my fork. As I bite down on the piece of pie, I realize it's still frozen. I tell the waitress and she makes a mock face expressing disappointment, says, "Oh, I'm sorry.", and walks away. She brings the check. We pay. I ask for the manager and I'm told there isn't one right now. What a wonderful meal. Never again. read more

We were seated right away. The waiter took our drink orders and brought them out pretty quick. We asked for more time to make our selections. I ordered the fajita nachos with only meat and sour cream. No pico and no guacamole and no lettuce. It came with lettuce and the sour cream setting on top of it. read more

This place is absolutely filthy. Sitting in the bar to eat I couldn't get over the 1/2 inch thick dust everywhere. There is dust on the window sills, on all of the wall hangings. The restrooms are filthy. I can only imagine what the kitchen looks like. Food was mediocre. read more

As soon as we walked in, the smell of a sewer hit us in the face. Not actually sure if it was a sewer, but definitely a very dirty smell. This is a very over priced Mexican restaurant. We didn't even get seated. We had a party of 5 and it seamed to overwhelm them. They had several parties waiting to be seated but never took anyone's name for a list. They just picked whoever I guess. We were there for about 30 minutes and never got a table. They seated people that got there after us with the same amount of people. I live in Granbury and know how restaurants get busy but this was ridiculous. I do NOT recommend this place. We were patrons of this place for a long time. The food was not great but decent. Then, when sitting at the bar one day I saw a cockroach crawl across the bar. I killed it, showed the bartender who was rightfully shocked. I figured "It happens, they'll fix it." A month of so later my son found a dead roach in his bowl of salsa. Never again. read more

1735: I am just going to give it to you straight. The place looks good. Servers are friendly. But the most important thing about any eatery is the food. Our app was bland and pretty boring. We gave it a 3/10 Red salsa was pretty much tomato sauce with chunks, It was boring and lacked any flavor, We tried adding salt hoping to bring out any heat that might be in it. I would give say its closer to if you blended up pace mild in a blender. 2/10 Entree - Ok so my wife is pregant and can EAT, I am a fatty and can EAT. Rice - tasted horrible. Beans - bland. Main courses we would give 3/10 maybe a 4/10 but we didnt even finish it. I am ex military and tried to eat as much as I could stomach. When you find yourself thinking that a 1$ taco from taco bell would beat it you are in the wrong place. Desert - We had high hopes after such a horrible meal. I knew the brownie sundae thing couldnt get much worse. I knew it came out of a box and figured it would at least be ok.....so they use that nasty water based soft serve icecream, cheap chocalate sauce and put that on a brownie that comes out of a box. I have been to El Chico in a few other towns, I have never really tasted such poorly made food at one. Hell El Chico in Abilene Tx is actually quite popular. Why would you pay for 30$ish for two people to eat when you could easily go to a fast food place, get quick service, go home and eat food that doesnt score a 2/10. We prefer Don Malaquias in Acton which is NOT a chain and their chicken enchiladas covered with sour cream remind me of the wonderful food we ate at El Chico's long ago at Ft. Worth. read more

El Chico is the best. We kept going back to MiFamilia hoping it would get good again, but it never did. El Chico has gotten really good in the past year... much better than when they first opened. And this place is authentic...
