We were in need of food coming back from oregon. And had an open trailer. Saw the rave reviews but they weren't true at all. Only thing good here was our server girl, who was really nice , left a hefty tip. She was dragging tables around trying to make customers comfortable. Very attentive. Chips were like Tostitos store bought and canned salsa and refried beans for dip should have been a precursor to the horrid food i got. The food was really LOUSY. I mean bad. Like straight out of a can. FLIES buzzing everywhere. My wife had chicken burrito there was no thought at all to it. No flavor. Microwaved reheated frozen chicken pieces . Place was a dump. My goodness, what a gem find! This quality food is delicious, PLENTIFUL, and reasonably priced. I had the chorizo chilaquiles and they were some of the best I ever had. Husband had the pork tamale and thoroughly enjoyed his meal, too. I also recommend the orange colored salsa; it's very unique and flavorful. We were in the middle of a weekend motorcycle trip and Willits was our stopping point for the night. We rolled into our hotel, unloaded our gear and headed across the street to El Chicano. I had done a bit of Yelp research beforehand to see what was good within walking distance of our hotel, and this place fit the bill. Due to Covid-19, they only had outdoor seating and takeout, but they have plenty of shaded outdoor seating, and the weather was perfect. The friendly (masked) staff greeted us and took our order inside. We both ordered a Negra Modelo and the Alambre special, which is carne asada, carnitas, bacon, peppers, onions and tomatoes covered in cheese with a dollop of sour cream, and served with fresh, warm tortillas. We were also given fresh chips with a spicy verde salsa, a red sauce and a small dish of refried beans for dipping. We were hungry, and it was perfect and delicious. Our meals also came with a free drink, so we had a Paloma and a Margarita. *They don't have a liquor license yet, so they're wine mocktails. Not terrible, but not as good as the real deal. The frosty beers on tap is the way to go! All in all, we had a great dinner on their patio and left there fat and happy. If in the area, I'd eat there again. The food tastes as if it was cooked in a small kitchen run by generations of caring, loving grandmothers. I have eaten here many times, and although not a local to Willits, I always make a point to stop here and enjoy a quality meal. The atmosphere is relaxed and laid back. Worst place ever they were rude and food was not good They kicked me out when I was only trying to have a conversation with the sons owner. He told me to stop talking to him after I was only asking him about his family's business and experience. They obviously don't love what they do for a living so for that reason I will never go back to this place. You do not go into this business if you don't like talking to people. I had already payed and gave a good tip! I was kicked out like I was a criminal when I had only tried to be friendly to the gentleman that was at the bar which was the owners son! I have had fajitas at countless Mexican restaurants and many aren't very flavorful. The combo chicken and steak fajitas here are seasoned perfectly and served with plenty of grilled onions and peppers. Plus the portion was huge! I was stuffed at two large fajita tacos but pressed on for a third knowing I was only eating for the sport of it and knew I would suffer. It was so worth it! For a town that rolls-up the sidewalks early, this place was already a hit when we finally got into town. Staff was great, food was exceptional, and the price was reasonable. Have you ever stopped somewhere on a road trip to eat and then can't stop thinking about the food for weeks afterwards?? I live about 3 hours away from El Chicano and I keep wondering if I should just jump in my car and go there for the AMAZING chicken enchiladas (verde), the black beans that are clearly homemade with a depth of flavor, the unsalty fresh chips and homemade salsas which will make your mouth sing (or fire it up, depending on which one!). The waitress was incredibly nice to everyone, including me. I was doing take-out and she kept an eye on my order, making sure it got completed even though a large group's order had gone in right before mine. I wish this restaurant was nearer to where I lived! I'd be in there every week... Re outdoor seating, in mid-October 2022, they had removed the outdoor seating in the evening, probably because it was quite cool at night. Probably a good idea to call ahead for take-out. read more
