Lunch was amazing. One of the best taco salads I've had in a while. Great customer service. Loved the Mexican ambiance.

Texano Burrito

So food was OK. Ever have a meal where you are eating it and it's OK as you can't figure out what's missing? Just seamed like there was no punch of flavor. It looked nice. I got a Texano burrito. "Smothered" in cheese... kind of. If it was me (I do cook a lot), I would have put the cheese on the inside and put the burrito in a panini grill and make it a bit crispy. Would have been better with some fresh salsa on the top. For me however, where they lost points is service. How many times can you walk by a table and see an empty glass at the end of the table and not ask if you need more? It didn't happen any of the 4 - 6 times our waiter walked by. Wasn't a busy night, so not sure why, but it's a quick way to not get a tip from me and I almost never give under 15%. Having something to drink with your meal is essential. Ended up only with 5% as that is what it was to get to a round number. Such an easy thing to do too.

This is my third time coming and every time, the food is just so good! The servers are attentive but not pushy and the food comes out super quick. You have the authentic Mexican vibe with comfortable seating options. Will continue to come back and bring others to experience the high value and great quality of food.

Best Mexican restaurant so far in Albany area!(I think) the service is great! All the food I had was amazing! The homemade flan was awesome!!

I actually enjoyed the food inspite of the bad reviews. We ordered the el molcajete and i love the steak and how it was prepared. The chicken looks dry but still taste good and the shrimp atr so tasty and fresh. The side order of enchillada is ok, looks dry when served, it's good but not something I would crave for. I did not taste the quesadilla but my friend said it's good. The desserts are delicious. The flan is not too soft and just the right sweetness. The fried ice cream is delicious too. The crust is crispy and yummy. The place looks nice. The furnitures are a bit old but thats ok. The service could be improved. The waiter looks so busy, doesnt wait a second in our table or ask if you need anything, always in a hurry to leave. The woman at the reception did not smile when we came in, she just stared at us! Smile! Make your customers feel welcome! Well since i like the food and everything was delivered as ordered, still keeping the five stars!

I've never had a bad meal at El Charro. The service is quick and friendly! I wish the guac portions were bigger.

I erroneously thought Don Juan's Mexican Grill & Cantina was part of a chain. It's an easy enough…read moremistake to make with similarly named Mexican restaurants throughout the States. And seeing how extensively the former Denny's Restaurant was remodeled you definitely get that large corporate feeling. This is not your Mom & Pop's home-town restaurant effort. But that corporate feeling begins to fade somewhat while you are dining. The staff are friendly, helpful, and appear to be enjoying themselves as evidenced by some of them singing along to the authentic Mexican background music. The menu is huge! Would you believe 20 pages of drinks and food? Fortunately, there are photos for almost every dish, so you have no problem wondering what it is that you are ordering. Besides, most of the offerings are Tex-Mex dishes which Americans are quite familiar with by now, e.g., tacos, burritos, enchiladas, fajitas, quesadillas, and chimichangas. One thing that I found puzzling was that tamales were only available in each of the three Combo dishes. You apparently cannot order tamales singularly. Upon being seated, we were promptly served complimentary chips along with a red salsa and a refried bean dip with cheese, pepper, and tomato. The salsa had no spicing at all. We each ordered a large (24 oz.) draft Modelo Especial ($10 each). My initial test of a Mexican restaurant is to try a dish with their Mole and compare it with memories of the home cooked meal I was served by a close Mexican friend more than 30 years ago. However, I had wanted to also try something more than the Pollo Mole at Don Juan's. I zeroed in on Tampiqueña ($27); a marinated grilled steak and a mole enchilada coated in their house made Tia Maria Mole sauce. The dish was also served with refried beans, rice, lettuce, tomato, green onions, and guacamole in place of sliced avocado. The steak was pounded very thin so that the likely tougher cut that was used was not overly chewy. The flavors however, with the grilling and marinade were quite tasty. The enchilada was filled with tender chicken, and the mole coating on the flour tortilla was more sweet than savory as opposed to what I would have expected from a more traditional chicken and mole combination. I guess it was the Tia Maria. Once again, I did not notice any spiciness . I was also provided with a container of four fresh, warm, flour tortillas. While I'm not a fan of flour tortillas these were the best flour tortillas I've ever encountered. My wife ordered the Tacos Al Pastor ($21), choosing steak over pork or chicken, topped with pico de gallo and fresh cabbage in corn tortillas. The three tacos were also served with rice, lettuce, and tomato. The red salsa served on the side had no spiciness. However, a second container of salsa more brownish in color had plenty of spiciness. She was very pleased with her meal. One additional item on the dessert list called out to me from the moment I saw it on the menu. Sopapillas ($9), as served here, they are triangular shaped pastry dusted with cinnamon sugar, whipped cream, and a drizzle of chocolate sauce. They were tasty and enjoyable but nothing like what I first encountered in a Mexican restaurant more than 55 years ago in Albuquerque, New Mexico. There they were a basket of fried dough morsels served to us before our meal, with honey to be poured on them. YUM! Overall, we were pleased with our Tex-Mex experience and are very likely to return to try some additional menu items. If you want spicy, be sure to request the appropriate salsa.

It was empty when we came, and we had at least 4 servers taking care of us. But the service was totally inadequate! We were seated at two tables. One table got their food before the second table even got our orderscyskrn despite several requests. The first table got their checks before we even got our food. When our reservation was made we were assured that we would get separate checks, but after our lunch there were several discussions and arguments about getting separate checks, using credit cards etc. At the end we did get separate checks but it was a hassle. Our food was if uneven quality. Some hot dishes were cold. My "tropical" salad was a big bowl of iceberg lettuce with a few strawberries and a couple tiny (diced) pieces of canned pineapple. It cost like a real lunch - about $15. The whole experience was unpleasant.

The restaurant is very beautiful and there are vibrant colors throughout we enjoyed all the flowery photo op areas that are available. There was actually a very large heart near the main entrance where customers could take a photo; very cool. We weren't fans of the plastic silverware and they prevented purchase of their Margarita flights because it was a holiday; I get the flights but if we're spending $16+ for a lunch item or $23+ for a dinner item in restaurant we should get real silverware. Mom and me ordered the Fajita Express ($16) my stepdad ordered the lunch cheese steak quesadilla $14.50. we were a bit disappointed when the fajitas arrived; no searing skillet, what's up with that? Just the food on a plate. The quesadilla was a strange presentation as well. Folded over in half but not cut, zero crisp or crunch, and sauce on top. Never seen anyone have to eat a quesadilla with a fork and knife before. The food did taste good overall but the presentation was a fail. We ordered a few drinks as well. All drinks were served in plastic cups. The beer was reasonably priced and cold. The house margarita was delicious ($12) and the Mexican Muel was also tasty ($10). As for some of the other Margarita options they cost as much as some of the lunch and dinner items, a bit extreme. We couldn't believe they didn't have any margarita specials on Cinco de Mayo, another fail. The restrooms are a bit of a mess. The mens room toilet has a leak at the base and the caulk job is horrendous. One of the hand washing sinks is out of service with a grocery bag over the spout and valve. Overall we had an ok experience, nothing spectacular. If it weren't Cico de Mayo we would have just stopped by Teds Fish Fry. Next time I'm in the area and looking for lunch or dinner, we will most likely try somewhere else.
