What is it about Tex-Mex joints in retired Dairy Queen locations that I like so much? First, our meal here was an accident because the adjacent Tex-Mex joint had nary a parking spot and -- presumably -- no seating in the dining room. We'd traveled almost three hours from the bay side of Houston to meet some long lost family for lunch and ... well ... El Charro it was. It's an old DQ, and they've done a fine job with separate dining rooms and an easy pass to the restrooms. There's even a small (full) bar. Service here on our visit was absolutely wonderful. We were made to feel like members of the family. The food here is good. Not great ... Not in my opinion, anyway, despite that everything was served hot and fresh. First, I ordered a chimichanga with beef because it seemed easy. The filling was actually some of the best I've had in a while, but the over abundance of queso just made it taste institutional. For some folks, that's a four-star thing. For me, it felt more like eating in a school cafeteria. The rice: spectacular. It had a nice bite and enough flavor to stand on its own. Retried beans were par for the course. We also ordered the house molcajete, which was phenomenal. Ordering a dish with multiple meats can be risky, but this version featured a bevy of meats (shrimp, chicken, beef) that were cooked to almost-perfection. Highly recommend. As with most Tex-Mex/Mexican joints, the salsa is the centerpiece of my experience. El Charro serves its salsa cold, and that's a huge plus. But it is basically tomatoes, garlic and some spice -- very much like Albert's Hot Sauce (for anyone who has ever eaten Tex-Mex in NE Texas) It's good, but not great. Missing is the hint of onion and the cilantro. Bottom line: I would definitely eat here again, and if I lived in this town I'd be a regular. read more

Took my family here for a late lunch. Four adults and 2 kids. The restaurant was fairly empty for a Saturday afternoon. We ordered appetizer, drinks and food once the drinks got to the table. The appetizer arrived before the drinks. The drink order was 3 sprites, a water and a Diet Pepsi. (I know a very complicated drink order) The appetizer was fresh guacamole. All of us ordered food except for my little one as she was content with eating the chips and salsa. The food eventually came to the table and we started eating. My son and I split a quesadilla, It was extremely greasy, but we were hungry so we ate it. My wife's rice was cold as was my father-in-laws. My mother-in-law also ordered a quesadilla that was extremely greasy as well. Our waitress was not attentive. She did make a very weak attempt at checking on us calling out "everything ok" as she was walking towards the kitchen. Not once were we asked if the food was ok or if we wanted refills. To top it off I had to go up and ask for the check and Togo boxes as the waitress never returned to our table. When I got the check I noticed it was rather high for 5 drinks, 3 appetizers and two entrees. Upon closer inspection of the bill the lady who gave it to me added a 15% gratuity. When asked about this charge I was told they automatically add this to the bill for parties of 6 and above. I stated that was not told to us when we were seated nor was it posted anywhere. She pointed to the counter by the register stating there used to be a sign right here that said that. But the sign was missing. I told here that a gratuity is optional not a guarantee based on the service received while at their restaurant. I also stated that I looked over the menu thoroughly and did not see it posted in there either. I stated that you cannot charge for something without posting it such as a transaction fee for credit or debit card use as an example. She rambled something about I don't own the place so it's not my problem, but I'll take the pre-determined gratuity off and you can add it when you pay your bill. My wife went up to pay as I was furious with the audacity of the restaurant for automatically charging a gratuity based on the size of the party without posting visibly for their patrons. When my wife went to pay, our waitress reappeared to cash us out. She said that she would remove it as a courtesy due to our daughter not ordering a meal. And stated that it was posted in the menu, but when she grabbed a menu she could not find it. Then pointed to the page it supposedly was on and said some menus have it and some don't. There was a large stack of menus in a table not far from the register that I promptly walk to and went through each one. The "Notice" was not posted in any of them. I grabbed the stack and handed them to the waitress and told her I didn't see it in any of the menus. A gratuity is not a guarantee. If you give me great service I will tip up to 20%, good 10-15%, if you do not come back to check on the table, do a drive by yelling across the room and never once ask if we would like refills you get 0%. In my job I am on a performance based pay scale. I don't get tips, but if I under perform my pay is cut. It is the same with getting a tip. If you give crappy service and are seen with your phone in your face, your pay is cut. Hopefully, the owner will take this to heart and coach his staff to treat the guests that come into his restaurant better. If not, it will end up like so many other businesses in Cameron. my friends and I had to stop in this town for a bit leaving cstat. we walked to this restaurant to escape the cold but did not expect to have the best breakfast of our lives. it was like a taste of home. the chilaquiles were so good. the Mexican omelette? best chorizo I've ever had. my friend got pancakes and even those were some of the best pancakes I've ever had. everyone was very polite and nice. overall this place is a perfect little stop read more

Yummy yummy everything!! the breakfast tacos are gigantic and the pack them full of piping hot yumminess! I can literally only eat two and I am stuffed. I have had the tres leche cake and it is delicate sponge cake sitting in creamy decadent goodness with light fluffy whip cream icing on top. You are welcome I have just ruined your diet for ever but you will never be calcium deficient. This is a must try. No matter if it is breakfast lunch or dinner I always get the lemonade! Ask for a large one it is well worth the price just the right amount is sweet and tart to quench your thirst. I also tried the pancakes they are light fluffy and not heavy or dense. I have tried so many things on the menu and I have not been disappointed EVER!! An added couple of bonus the will serve you breakfast all day if you like AND.... they were open today for the 4th of JULY! This mama was spared from cooking one meal today!!!
