I just love family restaurants! This restaurant is a very nice and Clean, friendly family restaurant. The food is pretty amazing! The food: I had the hard tacos beans and rice. everything was fresh, toco shells were nice and crispy but flaky.. just wonderful! Updated to add: I highly recommend the Tapatio dish--the shrimp was amazing (and asking them to add bacon is a brilliant idea)! Their special plate with "a little bit of everything" is good too. Really good Mexican food! This is our second visit and happy to see this place packed for Taco Tuesday lunch. I really enjoy the salsa sauce. It's smooth with a trace of cilantro and a strong note of black pepper. I'm not even crazy about black pepper but it really works in this sauce! It's addictive. I got Enchiladas Cozumel and my hubby got Enchiladas Chapala. What I like about the Enchiladas Cozumel is their chicken. They must have a nicely seasoned grill because their chicken is very tasty. Anything with their chicken would be a good choice! My hubby liked the Enchiladas Chapala because the pork was tender and flavorful, but he would opt for a different dish next time since he thought the sauce was a little bland although the pork was very enjoyable. This place has great good! I am a lover of Mexican food and this place delivered. The salsa was good and the service great. On my first trip here, I ordered a combo fajita for two (steak, chicken and shrimp) to split with a dining companion. I was pleasantly surprised when two huge plates of fajitas showed up as I was expecting to share one big plate. The rice and beans were good and I was pleased with all of the toppings (pico, guac, lettuce, sour cream) offered. On my second trip in a week, I ordered a combo plate with a chicken soft taco, cheese enchilada, and rice. Everything was awesome. My dining companions ordered various combo plates and everyone ate as much as they could and took home the rest. My kids ordered cheese quesadillas and chicken fingers both visits and there were no complaints. This restaurant is a needed and welcome addition to Doniphan County. I would rather stop here than go into St. Joe because the quality of the food is better than you will find on the other side of the river. This is definitely going to be a regular stop when we visit family in the area. If I lived close, I would be here at least once a week. It's that good! read more

I'm going to start off by saying that this is a truly authentic Mexican restaurant. If you prefer chain "tex-mex" restaurants, then go to Jose Peppers or something. The atmosphere here is on par with their food; extremely authentic and no detail has been overlooked. I had their tilapia and shrimp dinner, which came with Spanish rice. All of it was excellent. The only caveat is that I prefer a skinny margarita, which doesn't contain the sugary mix but they don't offer it. read more

This is the worst food, this is not Mexican food, I don't know what it is. Their red sauce tastes like ketchup. Their chimichanga is a flat burrito with bad tasting sauce on it. Go to the Southwest and see what a real chimichanga is. It's a large tortilla stuffed with shredded beef and deep fried with guacamole and sour cream on top. read more

Taking my daughter back to college, we stopped here for a quick lunch. Not much to say about anything in particular about this place. The food was really good but nothing extraordinarily outstanding, the service was definitely fast and efficient and their homemade salsa was really good! I had enchiladas and they only had beef enchiladas available, no cheese, no chicken, so no selection. My daughter had a taco salad that was better than middle of the road but nothing outstanding. I gave it four stars because the service and quality of food were well above average but nothing really truly stood out. read more

Excellent authentic Mexican Food great service at a modest price we go as a family quite often and even though they serve margaritas/alcohol it is very family oriented. They recently updated their menu and I've been slowly trying their newest items. Seems like the community as a whole supports them very well. read more

I don't get the high ratings. We heard really good things about this place and drove over from St. Joseph. It's a nice newer building, looked clean. Food was very similiar to LeMesa and El Magay, except not as good. Those places are pretty bland lame Mexican food as well. I didn't even finish my meal. That doesn't happen often. I supposed you can say it's the best Mexican food in town as they are probably the only one in Elwood. Good luck to them, but I definitely won't make that trip across the bridge again. read more

This used to be my "go to" restaurant for mexican carry out food. This time will be the last time I go there. They forgot to include the fresh toppings for the chimi. The chimi was small and not good at all without the toppings. I also tried the chili colorado which was barely lukewarm and lacked any flavor. Definitely not the spicey chili colorado you would expect. The only reason I gave them a two was the burrito. My grandson said it was good. Won't be back!!!! read more

El Canelo is a small restaurant located on Roseport Rd. in Elwood, Kansas, just across the river from St. Joseph, Missouri. I really love it because it has a great atmosphere and friendly staff. I go there often enough to where many of the staff recognize myself and my family and we can engage in conversation. I know the owner by name and it has such a friendly environment towards anyone who eats there. The food tastes great as well. My personal favorite is the Pollo Blanco, which is white meat chicken on white rice with white cheese dip, like you would have with chips, mixed in. I also like the tacos very much. I would say that when you get tacos you should go on Tuesday because tacos are only $.99. If you like authentic Mexican food then I would say this is definitely a place to go. Overall it is an enjoyable place, with a great atmosphere and service, and spectacular food. After all it's the best Mexican in Elwood. read more

Very good. Very clean. Good service and really decent Mexican food. It is also not expensive. It is across the river from us, but easy to get there and back without near as much traffic as we face driving across Saint Joseph. I recommend it. read more
