The customer service was amazing, i wish i could remember both bartenders name (both ladies) They both were on top of things with a smile and very friendly. We have eaten here 6 or more times this winter on our way to our Duck club in Gustine. We have tried numerous items with favorites being Chile Verde, Chili Colorado and the Picata dishes with Shrimp , beef and Chicken using the fabulous El Diablo sauce( not on the menu- a local recommended we try it). Worth asking for it! The servers are always pleasant, efficient and courteous! Combine this with reasonable prices and it continues to be a winner- at least with an Fart like me! The first time, because the place we wanted to go to was closed, and the second time was because our first time was way better than so many previous times, we wanted to make sure it want a fluke. We've been coming here regularly for the last 3 years. The service is hit & miss and unfortunately, do use the food. Not crowded tonight, five tables including ours. We sat ourselves; 4 min before or server took our drink order and brought menus; from the time we got our drinks to the time or server decided you get off of her phone and take our order, was 9 min! My husband has ordered the El Campestre burrito on numerous occasions and ALWAYS orders carne asada and adds shrimp (w/ $2 up charge, which is standard). Tonight however, the waitress and cooks said that the charge is $.75 PER Shrimp, and asked us how many did we want... 37 minutes later, (see pic) our server MIA again and our food sits getting cold. I had to holla for someone to bring out food. My sons nuggets are over done almost leathery. (See pic) Overall, terrible experience and I think it's time for us to look for a better Mexican spot. Had an 1 1/2 hours to kill in Newman before my daughters basketball game, so I went into the most bustling restaurant/bar in town since I hadn't eaten all day. Greeted by friendly server who gave me a menu and asked my drink preference. I asked what beer on tap and was told, but nothing excited me. Bland tap beer like coors light, bud, shock top, blah blah blah. How an establishment can have no REAL craft beer on the menu (like Stone or Anchor) in this day in age, is beyond me. Opted for a bottle of Carta Blanca. Served cold with a lime. Put the lime in my water. Chips and Salsa presented. Good salsa, very mild. Menu was as extensive as any Mexican restaurant. Ordered combo dish with chicken tostada and Chile Colorado burrito. Came with ample rice and refried beans. It looked beautiful. It looked delicious. But, IT WAS SO BLAND. No flavor. Served with a salt shaker, and I was tempted because of the flavor deficiency. Added salsa to the rice but helped little. Too bad, because the dish looked promising. It all just needed something. I saw the reviews and wasn't expecting something good for 4 stars. I approach and see a very ugly building with a crappy banner. I didn't want to judge a buck by its cover but when we inside we were greeted with this bad smell of old people. We ordered our drinks and I ordered horchata. I saw what might've been the cook( A lady with glasses) but a straw out of another drink dip into my cup then taste my drink. Immediately was disgusted as the waitress brought me the drink thinking I hadn't seen and immediately left not ordering another thing. This is my go to Mexican Restaurant. The Vista Del Mar is excellent! While it's true they can sometimes be short staffed, the food is worth the wait and their staff are lovely. Never had a bad meal here. read more

Used to go here every other week but the prices have noticeably increased. Make it worth driving to Turlock or modesto. Food here is great and convenient but like I said prices are too high. Food was too Bland, I had the Carne Asada. My Friend had Chile Colorado and was also bland no flavor of any season or salt, we had to ask for SALT and Salsa. This place has potential, but they need to to work on consistency and quality control. Perhaps a kitchen that takes pride in what they produce would help. There's a big dining area with decent ambiance, a bar with screens in case you want to check the scores on games. Relatively friendly staff. If only the food was of acceptable quality. Each time we've eaten their food we are disappointed. This last time we got take out, our rice was quite obviously refrigerated, it was hard, cold and unappealing. They didn't even bother to re-heat it or somehow freshen it up, they just packed in refrigerated rice with our take out. There were mostly pieces of fat in our beef soups, with just a few pieces of actual meat, and you could tell from the texture of the meat that it was not fresh either. The beans are also often old as well, which is obvious when you get a whiff of them. I guess it's too much to expect fresh ingredients, you know, like freshly made rice and beans, especially from a Mexican restaurant. Even if they aren't selling lots of plates, they can do food prep accordingly and still make food from fresh ingredients daily. It's really too bad that they don't have any passion or pride in what they are putting on the table, especially because it really shows. read more

Great place. Strange that they don't have Mexican been on tap, but I won't be pompous about it. Chips are freshly cut tortillas. Salsa is delicious. Service was spectacular. Rice and beans were great. Carne asada in chimichanga and taco was bland. Had no spice at all...as if the flavor of the meat is enough tantalize the tastebuds. Friend had shrimp ceviche and was really good...and they didn't charge for each little shrimpy. Shrimp tacos were four stars. Great atmosphere. Fun place. read more

Stopped here for dinner because we came to Newman to see the Play. It was within walking distance. Very good dinner. Enjoyed my shredded beef tacos. My husband really liked the chili Colorado. Definitely will return to this restraurant when we are in town. read more

My partner and I visit this place regularly. We love the service, food, and drinks. We always indulge in an appetizer and entree. Our most appetizer is the calamari. For entrees we usually get the shrimp quesadilla, shrimp chimichanga, or the fried shrimp plate. The names are in Spanish and am unable to remember them exactly. Contrast to their exterior look, the interior had some pleasant decorations (the restaurant side anyways). The bar on the other side, which was divided by a wall, seemed to be the dark side with just the barstools for seating. The men's restroom had a unique (I guess you can call it) "sculpture" that I feel the need to share. It was a stand-up urinal fitted for two. I was in such awe of this that I had to restrain myself from taking a snapshot in the restroom so you have to see it for yourself to understand what I'm talking about. Sorry ladies. If you're still reading this after the last comment, I am surprised and "thank you" for sharing the same interest as me in the little things in life. And now on to the food. I ordered my default dish for all unknown Mexican restaurant that has a seafood selection, the 7 seafood soup. The first sips of the broth was spicy and delicious. It was "thick" looking as I was told like a menudo. I never had a menudo so I can't confirm. Although they were true to their menu and did have 7 seafood varieties, I find it as false advertisement. After scavenging through the whole bowl as if looking for buried treasures, I was disappointed to find that the baby octopus, calamari rings, and the ONE oyster were all the size of a pinky finger nail, and the "crab" was imitation. The tortillas taste like it was stored in freezer and reheated in microwave. On a good note, however, I can say that they cooked the shrimp perfectly where it was still soft and tender. Our server was great and very attentive even during the lunch hour when she had to wait on all the tables by herself. By end of meal, the broth which was so delicious at start became to "tomatoey" for my taste. read more

I give this place 5 stars for the staff and the atmosphere always friendly, prompt and attentive. The food is okay, it does the job...I don't have anything bad to say about it, but given the choice I can't say it compares to other Mexican restaurants in Turlock/Modesto. But if you have to stay in town this is a nice place to eat if you are craving Mexican food! read more
