El Machismo Bagel (chorizo, egg, jalapeno)
    Melanie T.

Amazing breakfast bagels and donuts!!! I shared an El Machismo (chorizo, egg, jalapeno) bagel sandwich (on an everything bagel), and WOW. I loved that the chorizo to egg ratio is heavier on the chorizo so you can appreciate the full savory flavor of the meat. The egg was fluffy, and the bagel was so fresh!! The bagel's texture was fluffy and a little crispy on the outside, with good everything seasoning. It came out hot and was the perfect texture, temperature, and flavor all around. I was very satisfied. I also shared an horchata glazed donut, and it was also very good! Fluffy texture and yummy glaze. The service was friendly and efficient! We didn't wait long and there was a steady line of people who came through. I'll definitely be back to try more!

Sausage, egg and cheese on an Asiago bagel

I had a great experience here! I ordered a sausage, egg, and cheese on an Asiago bagel along with an iced vanilla latte and both were absolutely amazing. Everything was fresh and flavorful. The line was pretty long but it was definitely worth the wait. The employees were friendly, welcoming and kept things moving as smoothly as possible. If you're looking for an awesome bagel spot in the Bucktown/Wicker Park area, I definitely recommend stopping by. I'll definitely be back to try one a donut!

Came here right when it opened and it immediately filled up as we were ordering. I guess this is a pretty hot spot. They have a variety of bagels you can choose from when you pick a sandwich, including everything, egg, cheese, rosemary, poppy seed, and a few more. The sandwich is generous and very tasty. There's some seating but most people opted for takeout. Would definitely come here again for breakfast.

Good bagels! Order at the counter and take away or dine in, acres from Margis candies. I enjoyed the cold pressed OJ, looking forward to trying the breakfast sandwiches next time.

Pretty small spot, ideal for a pick up order but there is seating if you want to eat it inside. The bagels get the job done but it's kinda crazy how much better the machismo bagel sandwich is than the other ones. I really highly recommend the machismo. The staff are really kind. They don't have sriracha here BUT they kindly gave me a salsa to have with my bagel and tried their best to make me happy hahaha. Honestly most of the bagel sandwiches I've had (like the BEC) are really plain and NEED sriracha or something to give it more flavor. But somehow the machismo doesn't need it. Like I said before, get the machismo lol. Fair prices. Seriously is amazing to have this bagel spot here now, it's definitely filled a niche that this neighborhood was missing.

Tried 2 bagels and a burrito this weekend.. the prices and fillings are solid but disappointed in the bagels and tortilla as they were soggy / steamed texture. They should invest in a toaster and toast the bagels before loading them up, as soft steamed chewy bagel sandwiches aren't very appetizing. Same with the burrito, that outer shell needs more structure otherwise your burrito is falling apart. The everything bagel was pretty skimp on the everything topping but jalapeño cheddar was good.

Bagels have a weird aftertaste. I don't think I'll be back. It was an almost a dirt taste. Prices seemed ok. Space is pretty minimal. I wouldn't eat there. Felt a little grubby. People were nice enough. I didn't try the coffee but I'm guessing it's the same as the food. Pretty average.

I was finally able to stop in before they close and tried: - Chocolate Donut - El Machismo The donut was pretty good, but the El Machismo was standout. I had it on the regular bagel and it came with chorizo, egg, jalapeños, and a mayo based sauce. I would definitely get it again. The staff was also super friendly, so wanted to shout that out.

7.5/10. Solid bagel spot but you can definitely find better spots throughout the city. Everything bagel with butter, could have used some more butter. I'll be back to try some of their sandwiches.

Can I get a hell yeah for finally finding a good bagel in Chicago? HELL YEAH! El Bagelero is a small shop offers a unique twist to your standard bagel shop that I didn't know I was missing. Order the Las Carnitas on a Jalapeño Cheddar bagel with Chive Cream cheese. Thank me later.

El Bagelero is a new breakfast spot at Western & Armitage across from Margie's, which opened just after I moved from Logan Square so I only visit when I go to my old workout classes. It's a great spot for a quick breakfast. The vibe is very clean/new with a small amount of seating. They also offer pickup. Food: I've had the BEC on an everything bagel and I tried the Chorizo breakfast burrito and Steak & Egg breakfast taco. The BEC bagel was hot and fresh. However, I thought the bagel was pretty bland. Might be because it was toasted, but I didn't think it had much flavor. The breakfast burrito was amazing and the breakfast taco was solid. They load up on egg and potatoes for the burrito and the chorizo was solid. Salsa has decent flavor, wasn't overly spicy, and also a tad watered down. Being so close to Humboldt Park, I figured that the breakfast burrito and tacos would be better than the bagels and that is the case for me. I will have to try anlther bagel next time. Coffee is a tad watered down with not much flavor and it's $4 so on the pricey side when you can find better coffee in the neighborhood for that price. Prices are a tad high for breakfast at $10 for a breakfast sandwich and $10-15 for the breakfast burrito. But cheaper than Electric Mud/Cafe Tola and THRD's breakfast tacos and burrito. I pay ~$8 for a bacon and egg sandwich at Do Rite in the West Loop. Also, I thought Tilly Bagel Shop in the West Loop was slightly better quality. Do Rite and Tilly are both chains though. But El Bagelero does not skimp on the portion sizes. Portion sizes are big. Service is adequate. Overall, El Bagelero doesn't knock my socks off, but it is a great addition to the neighborhood!

Ordered through Uber Eats so I cannot comment on service or ambiance, but these bagel sandwiches are amazing! I got the chicken sausage egg and cheese with chive cream cheese. It was supposed to be on a sesame, but I received an Asiago which wasn't ideal but still great

If you're expecting this to be interchangeable with the franchised bagel places that have spread…read moreacross the country, recalibrate now. This is not that. I've been going to New York Bagel & Bialy for over 50 years, and places like this operate on a different clock, a different standard, and frankly, a different philosophy of what a bagel is supposed to be. Timing matters. If you show up after about 8:00 AM, your odds of getting bagels at their absolute peak--still warm, properly textured, with that slight resistance on the outside and softness inside--go up significantly. Earlier can be hit or miss depending on the batch cycle, but once they're in stride, this place delivers. The essentials are all here and worth your time: poppy seed, sesame, everything, and especially the bialys. The bialys alone are reason enough to make the trip--properly done, with the right chew and depth of flavor that you simply won't find in mass-produced versions. Don't overcomplicate it. Grab a dozen. On your way home, stop and pick up a couple packages of Philadelphia Cream Cheese and some smoked salmon a jar of capers, a Bermuda onion--whether here or even from Walmart--and you've got a meal that outperforms most brunch menus at a fraction of the cost. This isn't trendy. It's not trying to be. It's something better: consistent, old-world, and still doing it the right way. If you're going to call something a bagel, the standard is not branding--it's process. That's why New York Bagel & Bialy on Touhy stands apart. They actually do it right: kettle-boiled first, then baked in rotating ovens. That single decision--boiling--changes the entire structure. It gelatinizes the outer starch layer, locks in density, and produces that thin, glossy crust with real chew. Without it, you don't have a bagel--you have bread with a hole. The rotating ovens matter too. They deliver even heat, which means you get the correct balance: a slight exterior crisp with a dense, elastic interior. No puffiness. No sponge. No collapse under toppings. That's the difference here. Most chains optimize for speed and shelf life, so they steam or shortcut the process. Many local shops land in the middle. This place doesn't compromise. If you care about what a bagel is supposed to be--not just what it's called--this is the benchmark in Chicago.

Two of us shared a half pound pastrami on rye with a side of hash browns. The rye was pretty decent but the pastrami was sliced far too thick and the meat was lean. That is not a good thing when it comes to pastrami and I attribute the lean meat to the deli catering to its hipster-ish audience. Although the flavor was decent, the sandwich was dry and difficult to eat. We disagreed on the generously sized pickle. One of us thought the flavor was just right, the other not so much. We both agreed on the hash browns. It's a no-go. They were well fried but entirely unseasoned. I understand the lack of schmaltz but there was no onion or salt or anything else. Waffle House has nothing to worry about. (IYKYK) Service was fast and polite. The space is tiny, but it works. Prices are okay for this area but if you want traditional deli in Chicago, go to Manny's.

I don't know what technique they do it get or keep so much topping on them, but it's a pleasure to have too much rather than not enough. They service beer here which makes it slightly unbreakfasty and their bagel sandwiches used baked eggs rather than griddled/flat topped or from a pan. Keeps them fluffy, but I prefer mine a little runnier. Service is very good, friendly, not rushed or fake hospitality. They cure their lox in house which to me feels more tender than other places, probably just a lower, longer heating or a gentler cure. Excellent schmear, a not heavy handed when scooping (respect the schream cuz). Prices are pretty good considering the care and love they put into the bagels (hand rolled, multiple proofs). They have crunch, chew, density, but air pockets. Chef/owners def put thought into the menu with flavors like zatar, dilly ranch deviled eggs. Dr. Browns sodas. Baclava cappuccinos. White fish on bagel chips, Bagel dog is such a simple combination of not just the everything bagel seasoning, but the dough as well. And the mustard pairs better than had they added schmear (sorry Seattle dogs, i'm not a fan, i only like my cream cheese in philadelphia sushi rolls, lol) . The pizza bagel needs more toppings like pepperoni, sausage becuase then it would eat like a normal size bagel bite. The challah bread on the rachel really is more well rounded than the reuben. It's something I've been recreating back home. Giard cream cheese, cmon ya'll are really hitting the nail on the head for a Chicago bagel shop. I guess that's why there are 3 locations now. The Haystack with apple butter works better than expected, but also works with a chive cream cheese sub, no ketchup needed (if you do go with the harissa ketchup from the yada yada). BEC with a side of salted tomato and harissa ketchup is amazing. If everything was 10% more like toppings wise this would be amazing, but they always seem to skimp on something whether it's the schmear, pickels, salad. I feel like i was haggling for my meal sometimes. Prices area little high for most items, but of great value for others. It's busy in the mornings, but lines move long and only once did I have to wait for a fresh batch of anything despite some large orders ahead of me. It's a 20 minute train ride, but worth it.
