What a great find. My business partner and I were looking for a local restaurant for breakfast before heading back home to Las Vegas. We went into this restaurant to check it out. It's what you would expect from a small town eatery. Simple, quaint and spacious. The men's restroom was very clean and made for solo occupancy. I was interested in something on the menu, but our server Maggie recommended something different and I'm so glad she did! It was the breakfast burrito with chorizo. The burrito came out hot and fresh. I asked for green salsa on top and it came with a spoon size serving of sour cream on the side. It truly was one of the best breakfast burritos I've ever had and I ate the whole thing. Be aware, it's pretty big so great for one person if you're very hungry but also perfect for 2 people to share. Absolutely delicious. When I visit cities or towns, I usually enjoy eating at and supporting local restaurants. I highly recommend El Ateño restaurant and I will definitely come back if my business travels bring me to or near Yerington, NV again. read more

Great lunch between Christmas and NYE at El Alteno! First time visiting Yerington from Reno, and the town was very cool. El Alteno was one of the only spots open on this holiday Sunday, so it was packed! Despite that fact, our food came fast and was really well prepared! The enchiladas, tacos, tamales, beans and rice all slapped! Our servers were great, and it was super cool that everyone seemed to know one another. The vibe was warm and happy, and we really enjoyed our visit. read more

Chicken flautas always hit the spot , so delicious and crispy and light and fluffy. And you've got to pair that with the a double margarita . Their service is excellent , very attentive and friendly. There's never been a time when we didn't get good service from them. The ambience is great, family friendly and enough space to host a birthday dinner or even a company party. I'll take photos of my meal next time . read more

I really like this place! Good food and friendly staff. The enchiladas Suizas are great!

Very good authentic Mexican food. They had clean bathrooms, and friendly staff, that was available to refill my iced tea. I went to dinner, but at lunch when I drive by, the parking area is packed. That for me was a good sign. read more

Very disappointed with the service. We waited a long time, the waitress put salsa on my food without asking, and my burger was badly burned. When I politely asked if the salsa could be removed, I was told I would have to pay for a whole new plate as well. Poor customer service and a frustrating experience overall. read more

A heavy door is your first obstacle when entering the building, but not by accident. It's a fitting challenge, one that's well worth the reward: the incredible flavor waiting inside. The atmosphere is lit just right, with warm lighting that isn't too bright or too dim. As soon as you walk in, you're greeted by the rich smell of authentic Mexican food and the welcoming smiles of the staff. The room is filled with quiet conversations and calm energy. No loud, overbearing music, just people enjoying themselves. Polished, medium-stained wood lines the interior, accented by beautiful artwork on the walls. It gives you something worth looking at instead of your phone. You can tell the owners take pride in their place. El Alteño has been a local staple for decades and proves every day why it's earned its reputation as the best Mexican food not just in Yerington, but in all of Lyon County. I always judge a Mexican restaurant by its simplest dish: the bean and cheese burrito. El Alteño has it perfected. It's comforting, flavorful, and exactly what it should be. Next are the street tacos, which come with a variety of meats to choose from. They're the perfect size and finished with the freshest cilantro around. And finally, the carne asada burrito. It's big, it's bold, and easily one of the best things on the menu. read more

This was a disappointment. We had a hankering for some good Mexican. Guacamole lacked taste, beans and rice were bland. Lots of ambience as a regular haunt, but I'd try somewhere else next time. Sorry, I really wanted to like. read more

Came here because there weren't many options in this town and the reviews gave me hope, but I was completely mistaken. The service was painfully slow -- it took AN HOUR, just for two plates of what were basically canned beans and rice to finally come out. And honestly, I wouldn't even call these enchiladas. read more

Never had a bad meal here. The chili rellenos are the best. As are the burritos and tortas. The staff is very friendly and you can see into the kitchen. It's clean, as are the bathrooms. It's nice and quiet, no loud music. Now every time I go into Yerington, I get asked to bring back some chili rellenos. read more

Yerrington doesn't have much to offer when it comes to dinner night outs but El Alteno is definitely one of the few. El Alteno is a small little Mexican restaurant which has been around for years and rightfully so in this little town. It's nothing that will blow you away and it's also nothing which is going to offer you exceptional service but consistent good food is a sure bet. I honestly have made this a post workout spot when I'm stuck in Yerrington due to work. I go with this chicken fajitas with double rice (not a beans fan) and it's always hot to spot. Will continue to come back. At around $12 a person you can't go wrong at all. read more

Hands down the best Mexican food restaurant in the area. I love the staff and have always admired the hard working nice people here. Then there is the food! Someplace to really rave about. Since I've had my stroke I have not been able to visit, but intend to very very soon. I'll keep you updated. Its been 9 months since my last visit. I think it's the best in a really huge area of where I live. Carson City does not have anything close to the taste. read more

Not the juiciest meat in town, good flavor. The service is always dependable, and the place always is clean.

The margaritas are amazing, and we love their chili rellinos. soft tacos are made with real tender meat. Lovely place to eat. Great service. read more

This is very much a small town family owned and run restaurant. Nothing fancy, but good standard Mexican food served in a friendly, casual atmosphere. I have been here a lot as this is my favorite Mexican restaurant in town. I think the burritos and the crispy tacos are their standout dishes. Both are made with a choice of vegetarian, chicken, shredded beef, ground beef or pork. Ingredients are fresh and the tortillas home made. They also serve a very good taco salad with a choice of fillings. The last time I was there I had the dinner special - red enchilada and a crispy taco with rice and beans - and my son had the Mexican fried steak. I opted for chicken in my enchilada and shredded beef for the taco. The enchilada had a nice balance of cheese and chicken and the sauce was spicy but not too hot. The taco was the star. A crispy crunchy flour shell around spicy meat and fresh veggies with a dab of chunky salsa. The beans were a bit bland and I am not a huge fan of Mexican rice so the sides were just OK. My son gave me his guacamole which was an excellent addition to my taco. My son said the steak was tasty - it was well done and resembled a very large chicken fried steak without the gravy. Out total bill was just under $20 and included 2 Margaritas and a Mexican soda. The Margaritas are OK, nothing special. The food is the star here. I would recommend this as a great alternative to the fast food place that is on the other side of town. Worth the drive all the way to the other end of town. read more

Traveling through to San Diego and found this little gem. The service was great! Hard workers in the kitchen. They were busy with many cary out orders. There were plenty of options from their menu. Veggys and fish. The food was served pretty quick and the flan was the best ever! The price was very reasonable. I've book marked this place because I'll be back. I'd post a photo but we already ate it. read more

Good food. Good prices. Staff are friendly. There's lots of seating. Nice local spot for Mexican food. The cheese enchilada, shrimp cocktail and taco salad were good. The fried ice cream was okay. They don't give an itemized bill, even upon request. They total the bill at the register. There is a 60 cent charge for debit/credit cards. read more

While visiting the Queen of Reseda Sister, Brother In-law, and Mother, we had lunch at El Alteno. The food was good. Small town Mexican restaurant. The ground beef tacos and cheese enchiladas were money. Good friendly service. read more

Not impressed. The salsa was thin and uninspiring. The "Chili Colorado" burrito was anything but. The beef was boiled but apparently not in a sauce. It was tough and bland and there was no sign of red sauce anywhere. The burrito was mostly rice, There was no sauce or cheese on top, and no guacamole or sour cream on the side. Pretty dull. My wife had the whole fried Tilapia. She liked it, but it seemed overcooked to me. Again, no sauce or seasonings. Dull. On the up side, the place was clean, and the bathrooms well maintained and fresh. read more
