Great lunch between Christmas and NYE at El Alteno! First time visiting Yerington from Reno, and the town was very cool. El Alteno was one of the only spots open on this holiday Sunday, so it was packed! Despite that fact, our food came fast and was really well prepared! The enchiladas, tacos, tamales, beans and rice all slapped! Our servers were great, and it was super cool that everyone seemed to know one another. Very disappointed with the service. We waited a long time, the waitress put salsa on my food without asking, and my burger was badly burned. Yerrington doesn't have much to offer when it comes to dinner night outs but El Alteno is definitely one of the few. El Alteno is a small little Mexican restaurant which has been around for years and rightfully so in this little town. It's nothing that will blow you away and it's also nothing which is going to offer you exceptional service but consistent good food is a sure bet. I honestly have made this a post workout spot when I'm stuck in Yerrington due to work. I go with this chicken fajitas with double rice (not a beans fan) and it's always hot to spot. This is very much a small town family owned and run restaurant. Nothing fancy, but good standard Mexican food served in a friendly, casual atmosphere. I have been here a lot as this is my favorite Mexican restaurant in town. I think the burritos and the crispy tacos are their standout dishes. Both are made with a choice of vegetarian, chicken, shredded beef, ground beef or pork. Ingredients are fresh and the tortillas home made. They also serve a very good taco salad with a choice of fillings. The last time I was there I had the dinner special - red enchilada and a crispy taco with rice and beans - and my son had the Mexican fried steak. I opted for chicken in my enchilada and shredded beef for the taco. The enchilada had a nice balance of cheese and chicken and the sauce was spicy but not too hot. The taco was the star. A crispy crunchy flour shell around spicy meat and fresh veggies with a dab of chunky salsa. The beans were a bit bland and I am not a huge fan of Mexican rice so the sides were just OK. My son gave me his guacamole which was an excellent addition to my taco. My son said the steak was tasty - it was well done and resembled a very large chicken fried steak without the gravy. Out total bill was just under $20 and included 2 Margaritas and a Mexican soda. The Margaritas are OK, nothing special. The food is the star here. I would recommend this as a great alternative to the fast food place that is on the other side of town. Worth the drive all the way to the other end of town. read more

Not impressed. The salsa was thin and uninspiring. The "Chili Colorado" burrito was anything but. The beef was boiled but apparently not in a sauce. It was tough and bland and there was no sign of red sauce anywhere. The burrito was mostly rice, There was no sauce or cheese on top, and no guacamole or sour cream on the side. Pretty dull. My wife had the whole fried Tilapia. She liked it, but it seemed overcooked to me. Again, no sauce or seasonings. Dull.
