I grew up coming here so whenever I come to visit friends I have to stop by el abajeño. I've had many dishes from here and they're all great. This is my first time trying their famous burrito "El Abajeño" this thing is MASSIVE! You can easily share this with two, maybe three people. We are always looking for new Mexican places so we enlisted our trusty AI agent that uncovered this place, so we figured we'd give it a try. We were a bit put off by the bars on the windows, but once we went inside, the place felt more warm and inviting.. authentic you could call it. The menu is very large and it took us some time to read through it. I'm always looking for good carne asada, so decided on the burrito. I told them to put the rice and beans on the side but they said if you get it without them, you don't get them at all. Uh ok. Too many places use the term carne asada but it's really just beef. Here, it's actually steak, and it's really nicely seasoned and was very good. Spicy salsa comes on the side, as does a few chips and... spicy carrots! I love those and very few places seem to have them anymore, so it was a welcomed surprise. I didn't see them on the menu for sides ... I would have liked to have ordered more. My lovely date had the chicken tostada salad and she said it was good, and was too large to finish, so she took the rest home and had it the next day. It looked fresh. Really frustrated and annoyed at the 2% credit card surcharge. I'm not against passing costs along to customers, but I am against doing it in an ala carte way. Just add .25 to my soda, or .50 to my burrito... build it into your pricing and I won't feel it as much. That kind of stuff really bothers me, so sorry, I'm deducting a star for this. The staff seemed friendly and the place was clean. They have been there since the 1960s, so that's really impressive. I would certainly try the burrito again. Pretty solid bean and cheese burrito, definitely would recommend if you want a more bean forward burrito. I wish I had a photo of their menudo but that was a go to for a while, I think their menudo is one of the better ones on the westside! Service is very friendly, ambiance is a typical mexican restaurant. I've been going to El Albajeno for decades.. Unfortunately the quality of food has been declining. It gets tiresome when you spend a lot of money and your order does not come out well as you planned it to be. One of the carne asada burrito barely had any meat. Majority of it was rice. We asked for no onions but there was so much inside. The other carne asada burrito had more beans than meat. We asked for no chile and but our request was denied. It's becoming to be a hit or miss with Abajeno. It makes me sad to write this review. I think the problem is they need to look at the ticket a little bit closer and to make sure that food is balanced with ingredients and flavor. This restaurant has a lot of nostalgia for our family. We were looking for an Asian restaurant near LAX airport to sit down for nice meal after long day at the DMV. Checking on Yelp, we got to different places but didn't like that. So this time, I suggested to have Mexican food since big Mexican population in the area. I found this location. After checking the pictures to see it's a real restaurant & wanted to give it a trial. Surprise to see it's a very nice Mexican restaurant with parkings on the side. Inside is a traditional Mexican style. I ordered Cocido de res Thats Beef soup and it was so good that my friend also wanted one. The flour tortillas is thin and not huge big. It was real good. Many customers ordered to go as well. I have been to this establishment many times over the years. They used to have a cafeteria like setting, when you lined up to order, but it has since changed. The overall ambiance is a Mexican style setting, with the aroma of delicious food being made, and served! Staff is always friendly and attentive. I have explored the menu over the years, but always seem to go back to the number 12, which consists of 2 carnitas taquitos, beans, and rice. These are not your average taquitos. They are lightly oiled corn tortillas, with a generous portion of freshly shredded carnitas, white cheese, and a large slice of avocado. They are not crispy, or rolled. You can actually make 2 tacos out of each one. Whatever you are in the mood for when attending this establishment, it is definitely worth trying anything on their menu ! read more

Came here for a late lunch on a Thursday afternoon. Had the carnitas plate and it was very filling. The tacos were jam packed with carnitas and the beans were so delicious the rice was good and the chips were crispy. The good was authentic and well made. The salsa was good, not too spicy. Today I ordered pozole and although it was tasty and came with generous amounts of condiments ( cabbage, onions, lemon and chili) they did change the original recipe from the last time I ordered it, it was a much thicker dark broth than before. It tasted really good, but I like the original one from before better . The meat was so tender and delicious though My husband got the chorizo plate and finished every bit of it The rice and beans are usually so good but every once in a while, the rice is a miss, like today it wasn't warm and it was not fluffy and soft, almost seems like it was the bottom of the pan or yesterday's rice , I exchanged it for beans instead, and they gave me no problems on doing so. The original employees I believe they're probably the owners are always so nice and accommodating . I highly recommend the Carnitas taquitos, which are corn tortillas stuffed with their delicious Carnitas, avocado and cheese! Also, this place might go to when I'm craving a good bean and cheese burrito I have not tried half the things on the menu but everything I've tried so far over the years I have really enjoyed . The restaurant itself is cute, very Mexican feel for sure. This is the type of restaurant where you order in line where you pay and sit until they call your name , there is no wait service but they do have workers coming out constantly and cleaning the tables for the next guests. El Abajeno is the best Mexican food on the west side. It's the real deal: you walk in and there's Mexican people at the tables, the register, and in the kitchen. The walls are covered in Mexican art, painted beautiful on tile. Everyone is speaking Spanish, there's Mexican music playing over the speakers. You can't get any more authentic than this spot. On top of the mellow ambiance, the food tastes great and is reasonably priced. I got the Chile Colorado dinner plate (pictured) and it was some of the best meat I've ever had in a Mexican dish. My Mexican girlfriend even ate my leftover beans because, in her words, they're "just like abuelita used to make them". If you're into Mexican food, don't sleep on this place. read more

Huge menu with quite a few vegetarian options, the vegetarian burrito is excellent, will try the veggie super tostada next time.
