When we visited Centinela, Emily, the daughter of the owners, was there. She told us all about the rugs, made some suggestions, and told us they could custom make a rug in any colors we wanted. She also told us that even though they are competitors with other weavers in the area, they are all family, and we might find something we liked better at one of those locations. Centinela has absolutely gorgeous rugs, ponchos, vests, hats. Each was a work of art. Emily was delightful and hilariously funny. Crowds gathered around her just to hear what she had to say. Though we did end up purchasing at Trujillo's up the street, a visit to Centinela is definitely worthwhile. Update: We returned to Centinela today, and the owners, Lisa and Irv, were there. I had called earlier because I wanted to have a southwestern woven panel sewn to the back of my denim jacket. I was told to come in. Lisa said they had 15 panels already made, but she couldn't find them. Irv rudely told us to get out if the way while he looked for them. Neither could find the panels, and Lisa thought someone else who worked there might have put them somewhere. We asked her to call that person, but she would not. Today was our last day of vacation in the area, so I'm kind of disappointed. But I also don't want to spend my money with rude people.

There are three stores in one here so make sure you ask to see all three. (They may have to unlock…read morethem.) The main store is chock full of icons, santos, colonial furnishings---a great array. The second store front is full of mostly African artifacts, mixed in with some more colonial and antique tables. The final store front (depending on the order you're let in) is mostly architectural salvage items. Everything is top-notch. Feel free to bargain with them. The most they can do is say no. Cody, the newest member of this team, showed us around when we were there and you could tell he was passionate about his items (mostly the African artifacts). Make sure you stop in here (especially if you are headed to Rancho de Taos for a side trip from the Plaza.
