We had excellent food and excellent service at Egun-On! My wife and I were staying overnight in Barajas in order to catch a morning flight out of Madrid. I found Egun-On while browsing Google Maps and decided to get us a reservation for our last chance at good Spanish food, and we ended up having a wonderful experience. It's a casual, tavern sort of place with a bar that was quite busy and plenty of outside seating. Our waiter asked if he could suggest dishes for us to try and we were pleased that he did. Everything was very well made and delicious. We had oxtail croquettes, with the tender braised meat in its broth somehow encased in a deep fried shell, served with a mild pepper jelly. There were filo sachets of crab, served with a spicy pepper jelly. There was octopus served with truffle paste and potatoes. Scallops were served in the shell with kimchi mayo, torched at tableside, and then topped with fresh lime zest. (I would have thought the scallop flavor would have been buried in the spicy mayo but this was not the case; all of those elements went together very well.) We had a mousse made with a cream liqueur for dessert that was light as a cloud and very tasty. This ended up being one of the best meals of our trip (and we've had a number of really good ones). We have to thank our waiter, as he got us to try several dishes that we wouldn't otherwise have ordered.
So, excellent food, great service, fun atmosphere, nice people. We will never again fly out of Madrid without spending the last night in Barajas and eating at Egun-On. Mike sez check it out! read more
