If you don't want to wait too long, go early! Similar to the DMV (although not as hectic), you wait…read morein line. Once you get inside, you're required to open your bags and empty out your pockets in front of the security guard. This is a federal building--city and state laws won't apply. No food, no drinks, no weapons. Once you get past the security guard, you walk over to a computer to check in. Make sure you have your SSN ready. Then your number prints out. Don't be alarmed with the order that the numbers are called--they won't be in order. I'm not sure if this is true, but from my experience (name change after marriage), they definitely prioritized those getting their social security benefits, which I understand. I arrived there yesterday at 08:50am as probably the 7th or 8th person in line and got out at 09:30am.

First time experiencing the SSA office and hopefully will be my last for a while…read more While everything about the process here was orderly and as expected, it was pretty somber being here. When you first arrive, the entrance is blocked by a security guard who checks your bags and anything else on your person (in my case, a folder) to ensure you're not bringing anything that is off limits. He then ushers you to the check in line where you log into a touch screen computer the purpose of why you're there as well as your SSN number. A ticket then prints from the computer that gives you your place in line. Afterwards, you take a seat in the lobby to wait for your number to be called. This is where it started to get depressing. All the seats are facing a wall with one TV monitor that displays which numbers are up. You're faced away from the windows where the interviews are happening. Even though you're not looking at the people going through their application, you can still hear every word since it's a small office and there's absolutely no noise of any kind. So I could hear all types of personal information about the people talking with the SSN reps about what was going on with their case. In addition, there were several people here that were elderly and did not speak English well. While I get that the employees here don't necessarily love their jobs, I couldn't help but feel a little angry at how the employees were treating these patrons. Borderline yelling at them and speaking to them as if they were stupid, overall it just made me feel disgusted. Like talking slowly and loudly to someone who already doesn't understand English does not suddenly make them fluent in the common tongue. The numbers are sometimes called out of order based on availability of the representatives with expertise in the reason for why you're there. I waited for the better part of an hour for my number to be called and my interview itself went by really smoothly and quickly. I was done within a matter of minutes with my receipt confirming my name change. I was glad to be able to leave and get on with the rest of my day.

I had my paperwork ready so once my number was called it only took 5 minutes. The lady at the counter was courteous and very efficient. The security guard was very friendly too. The parking lot is small and had about 3 empty spaces when I came in. PS - If you are like me and keep losing your social security card, get a new one soon! The lady told me they will start charging for it next year :D

He definitely has a Napoleon syndrome complex. I was running late and the security guard instead of advising me to slow down firmly, he started yelling at me, demeaning me, and belittled me for close to 2 minutes. In my entire life no police officer has ever been so rude and demeaning to me. He treated me like I was a criminal. Wow. I know I was wrong to run but there was no one on the street in front of me so why treat me like a criminal. I won't go to that office and I'll warn all my senior citizen friends of this Napoleon syndrome security officer. I guess he gets his jollies shouting at senior citizens. In fact, due to this experience by this irate security guard I had to see a doctor because my heart was acting up after this incident. My wife advised me that we should see a lawyer to rectify the situation.
