There was quite a lot of smokers around, so be prepared for your clothes to smell later. The dutch pea soup I had was somewhat heavy for my liking but it was good. Welcome to Haven Van Texel. Right at the north end of the red light district. A colleague of mine said she goes here for traditional Dutch cuisine, so let's get to the food shall we. Of course we're going to snag an order of the Croquettes. Nice bite size potato mash balls with meat in it. These ones are nice and neat with a perfect delicate crunch. Great balance of potato to meat ratio. 8.2/10 For my main event, the Stamppot. This is a rotating dish that's usually different every time. Whatever protein that's available in the market with seasonal vegetables in the mash. It's like a lovely surprise every time I visit. Today we have pork. Perfectly seasoned, the meat was fall off the bone and the mash was a delightful side. 8.7/10 The place is really nice, the tables outside do go fast during busy hours. The staff was nice enough to let us sit by at the bar so we can enjoy some drinks while we wait. I would definitely smash here again. While enjoying our drinks, we got some shareable snacking food. The meat dumplings are steamed. The chili sauce is great. Nice kick! The Asian Broccoli is really good, and it is not often that this is on a starte menu. It is really more a broccoli side dish, but it really enjoyed it and how carb friendly this app is. Service is okay. You have to go to the bar to order and pay for drinks if you sit out front in the terrace tables. Inside there is food and drink service at the table. A staff person does bring the food and drinks out. I enjoyed this locals style non tourist neighborhood whisky bar.

J.D.'s was warm and inviting; a whisky lover's paradise with food to match. We ordered the chicken kaarage (BOMB) and the Japanese-aged beef nachos (WOW) along with two Rye Old Fashioneds. We followed that up with a Japanese whisky flight that blew my socks off. Service was quick and accommodating. Amsterdam isn't know for its whisky and I began to miss it during our stay...J.D.'s satisfied that craving and left a huge impression on us. Go here and spend all of your money!!!

Menu was delivered and the specials were explained. The menu was fairly limited, but plenty enough. Our server also explained that the mains do not come with any side dishes. We were a group of six and the entire place could have held maybe 15-18 more people. Not a big place, but very cozy. We had some drinks and in no time our food was on the table. I had ordered the seared tuna and my wife had ordered the rump steak. Both were cooked to perfection and both very tasty. We had ordered fries, beet root, and stir fried veggies for appetizers to share. The fries came with a garlic aoli/mayo, that was very tasty. Overall, our service was at Vlaming was impeccable, the food was excellent and the price was in line with what you'd expect. In fact the food was more in line with what you'd expect at fine dining, but with a lower price. I like Vlaming and would go back again !

More of a place that locals go to though there were also several tourists last night, including us :). Sat outside on a lovely warm night, started with a beautiful and tasty lentil salad and a creamy rich yellow pepper soup. Both were yummy. The mains were three large pieces of filet of sole and a perfect medium rare duck breast. Both were delicious and good sized portions. We also shared a side of crispy fries which were also very good. Service from the staff at Vlaming was exceptional. Friendly and gave very good advice about the wine and food choices. Had a nice time talking to another family sitting next to us, also from California. Vlaming was an excellent restaurant choice for our first night in Amsterdam.

So they sat us in one of the back rooms. I believe everything was from the Edwardian era. The room we were in had this beautiful fireplace. We were the only two people there. So we had excellent service and they were so sweet. They kept apologizing for the noise from the party. The menu was small but we tried to pick foods we've never tried before. Everything we had was very good. What I thought was cute was that at the end of our meal all the cooks and employees can to the room we were in put some tables together and sat to eat. They were having such a nice time together and it felt like we were having dinner with family. I'm sure they were taking a break before having the big party come in to eat after their drinks.

Mika was a wonderful host and we absolutely loved the mustard soup with eel and homemade fresh bread! The spinach and cheese ravioli was simply a party-in-your-mouth experience! We also ordered the steak and fries, while the steak was good, we absolutely loved the fries! I don't know what that used to make those fries, but it's the best I've ever tasted! My friend and I are were craving a mocha coffee and for some reason, there was none available from the shops we visited. Mike was gracious enough to make us some and it was simply DIVINE! We suggested she add this to her menu, especially since you can smell the rich fresh aroma of cacao that permeates throughout the area. The reason there's a strong chocolate scent, is there is a chocolate plant in the heart of the little village. Initially, we couldn't make out the scent but it only took seconds for our olfactory nerves to identify it, & signal that information to our brain! Outstanding service, food, price, & ambiance!
