This is a very interesting place to visit. Edwin Carter (according to info at the Center) journeyed to Colorado after leaving his native upstate New York. The video presented in the small theater space tells the story of how he became a fairly successful miner during the Colorado gold rush era. But more importantly, when he observed the destruction of the environment caused by hydraulic mining, he began collecting native animal and bird specimens because he believed they would become extinct due to their habitat destruction. He built the current log cabin museum to house his collection of over 3,000 animals, and sold his collection just prior to his death in 1900. The Denver Museum of Nature and Science owes its original start to the collection. The informative video is a bit lengthy, but take the time to watch it all. As you walk through the small museum and view the items and history on display, you'll be glad you did. read more
