The school facilities were pretty nice - walls decorated with school decorations and students' works. Very colorful setting that encouraged a safe space for learning. For a Saturday morning program, I was very impressed by the involvement and presence of the school administration. Teachers and the principal arrived on time, ready to engage with the students. Good teachers really don't get enough praise for their dedication. Students also arrived by school bus, which is a reliable and efficient way for students to get to a school program on the weekends - so cool! The thing that really topped it off for me was the diversity in the student population. The student body represents 31 different countries... yes THIRTY ONE countries. Most are children of refugees and come without an English background. You definitely would not be able to tell the latter because these kids were engaged throughout the program, displaying proficient in learning/comprehension. I am all for children growing up with diverse group of friends and learning cultural values early on in life. It's something that won't do harm in their future. S/o to Kenny because according to him, I'm the "same language as him." Awwwwww.

Expect the teachers to scream at you and make excuses to get you into trouble since they have the power to do it and won't like your kind. Debbie Leonard was one teacher. She tried to manipulate me into believing there was something wrong with me. Even as a child I knew she wasn't trying to "help" me. She then slandered me to the school counselor and sent me there. When we spoke, fortunately the counselor knew there was nothing wrong with me. Mrs. Leonard would yell at me and insult me often, while turning a blind eye to any child who mistreated me. The following year, she slandered me to Nancy Swan, my 5th grade teacher, who was even worse. She would SCREAM at me in front of the whole class. She would yell at me for weeks because I had a pencil case instead of a pencil pouch. I asked her why that even mattered, and she stuttered and said, "You're too old to have a pencil case." As if there's an age limit on stationary. And she was stuttering, because she knew she was lying. She, like Mrs. Leonard would find ways to get me into trouble and make stuff up to have an excuse to yell at me. I found notes in my folder of her trying to convince my mother that I needed to see a doctor, even though she was the one trying to bully a 10 year old. Oh, and Jennifer Klaas-Taylor, the gifted teacher? There were two plays: one on the Civil War, the other on Slavery. Since I was one of two children of "a darker persuasion", she had the lighter students put on darker make up for the slave play to make it look more "believable"! There's a term for that, you know. For the sake of avoiding triggers, it's putting BLACK makeup on your FACE!!! She then looked at me with the make up and said, "You're next." Ha, get it, because, you know, I'm already....? This place was horrible, and I don't miss it at all.

They really care about teaching to the child the way they learn best. The small class size allows for each kid to work at his own pace. My son was very excited to be able to start some algebra in the 5th grade. They get recess at local parks and lots of interesting field trips. Even though the school is small the director always strives to have a variety of extra curricular options available. Everyone there goes the extra mile to make sure the kids are getting what they need.

Each child is treated as an individual and learning programs can be tailored to each child's needs, as the class sizes are intentionally kept small. The kids spend plenty of time outside, where they can play and discover and interact with the world around them, instead of being cooped up inside all day. The teachers make learning exciting and collaborative, focusing on each child as an individual. My older son is flourishing at Kingfisher after a very difficult experience at a Montessori school. He is advanced in some areas and lacking in others, and Debbie and the teachers at Kingfisher have been wonderful about updating us about his progress and working with him and with us to ensure that he gets everything he needs, both academically and emotionally. My younger son is more typical and fits right in as well. Both of my children are happy and excited about getting up in the morning to go to school, and are allowed to be creative and share their enthusiasm for learning. We are completely happy with Kingfisher and will keep sending our children there for as long as we can.
