I suggested looking up sandwich shops and of the list of places, Newberry Sub Shop, was the random pick. Located in a picturesque area of Williamsport, PA, and a decent trek off from I-80, Newberry is a local, mom & pop type shop that is popular among the locals. Their menu offers a nice variety of sub sandwiches which is what we were interested in. The shop is a counter-service type establishment. Menu is on the wall and also on paper near the ordering counter. There's a small dining area inside the shop and also, an outdoor seating area. We were taking our food to go. We ordered 1) cold Salami Sub and 1) Mushrooms and Bell Peppers Cheesesteak with cherry (hot) peppers. We also grabbed a local brand of spicy jalapeno flavored potato chips. We received good, friendly service. The staff was helpful to us in deciding what we wanted to order. The menu items were reasonably priced and you got good bang for your buck. The sandwiches were huge and loaded. Both the sandwiches were good. I got the cheesesteak and it hit the spot. The meat was well-cooked and flavorful, and the veggies and the cheese added a delicious taste. My only gripe about the cheesesteak was that the bread was very soft where the sandwich fell apart due to how hot (temp.) the cheesesteak was, thus making for a sloppy eating experience. But that's why you have utensils like fork. The Salami sandwich was also delicious. The chips were okay. They were a bit salty for my liking and not quite spicy. Overall, this was like a hidden gem of a find for us (since we were visitors passing by and not locals). I would like to have more of their other offerings. I am not sure when I'll be back in that area but suffice to say that I will be going back to Newberry when I return to this part of Pennsylvania in the future. Check out Newberry. My last two interactions have made it unlikely that I'll be going back anytime soon. Example 1: I called at 7:23 p.m. and specifically asked how late they were open because a friend and I wanted to get cheesesteaks. I was told they were open until 8:00 p.m. We arrived at approximately 7:35 p.m., only to be told that the grill had already been turned off and they were no longer serving cheesesteaks. I noticed there was a sign stating that the grill closes at 7:30 p.m., but that information was not mentioned when I called. If I call ahead to ask how late you're open, it seems reasonable to mention that the grill closes well before the actual closing time. Otherwise, saying you're open until 8:00 is pretty misleading when a major portion of the menu is unavailable by 7:35. Example 2: A few days later, I came in with another friend to get food. After ordering, I sat in the chairs and waited. When I saw my food come out from the back to be finished and wrapped, I stood up and walked toward the counter to get ready to pick it up. I had been standing there for less than three seconds when I was abruptly yelled at for being too close to the counter. What made this especially frustrating was watching other customers approach the same counter, stand there, talk, and place orders for considerably longer without receiving the same treatment. Less than 30 seconds later, my food was ready, meaning I had to approach the counter again anyway. If there is a rule about where customers are allowed to stand, that's fine post a simple easy to read sign then just politely ask customers to wait in a particular area. There was absolutely no reason to yell at someone who had simply stood up to collect an order that was visibly being finished. I've supported this place for years, which is why these experiences are so disappointing. Good customer service require only a little clear communication and basic courtesy. Providing that minimal quality of service would have made both situations nonissues. Unfortunately, after being treated this way twice in such a short period of time, I don't have much desire to return anytime soon.

Lucky for us, Flook's offers the entire range of butchery knowledge, with meat cut in-house. A great find.

They have something here called "The Growler"-- or is that just my stomach? Prices and service right out of a 1950s Amish Archies comic book. If there is/was such a thing. I need to get some sleep. Since 1918, they say. Was this the only thing in Lock Haven in 1918, and they built the town around it? Maybe the early settlers thought that THIS was Texas, the way they thought the USA was India, without GPS's and all. There's got to be a story here, but Ohio is on the horizon.

My family has roots in the area going back decades (even centuries) and this restaurant is part of that history. I understand it's been around for ~100 years, and many of my older family members, mostly relatives who have since passed away, have enjoyed meals here over the years (think 1920s, 30s, 40s, 50s...) My parents remembered eating here more than 20 years ago for the famous hot dogs and burger dogs, so we knew we had to make a pit stop. We ordered three hot dogs, a burger dog, onion rings, and a soda. Everything was good, filling, and ~ perhaps most impressively ~ incredibly affordable. There was something really special about sitting there and knowing my family had done the same thing generations before me. :) It brought back a lot of good memories and gave the meal a feeling that you just can't recreate at a newer restaurant or even in a hustling and bustling city. The location right in the middle of downtown Lock Haven is great, and we had no trouble finding parking even during a busy 12:00 Friday lunch hour. Our service wasn't necessarily the friendliest (not rude or anything - just straight and to the point), but honestly, there was something about that that almost made the experience better. It felt like a true old-school diner experience. Hah! I can only imagine the stories these walls could tell. A great little piece of local Lock Haven history, and I'm so glad we stopped in. PS - They prefer cash, and the restrooms are very small/probably hard to navigate for someone with serious motor issues and maybe not feasible if in a wheelchair
