This is a curious place located inside the market. I found it by chance wandering through and had to do a double take. I was feeling a bit weary and so felt a pick me up flat white was in order, so I nipped over.
Now I dunno if the guy serving was just a temp or what (it was just before Christmas), but it was clear he had no clue. Maybe it was bad luck I stopped by at the wrong time ... whatever, that's the luck of the drawer!
I'm no coffee snob but when I asked him if they did a Flat White the response was something bizarrely incoherent like 'do you mean a coffee with milk, some people ask for a coffee and then complain when it has milk in it!' ... what? Anyway, what I got eventually was a sub-par coffee with zero flavour (likely old/stale beans) and warmed up milk. I also got plenty of ill informed guff about their approach to selling coffee.
How do I know the beans were likely old/stale, well I'll tell you. I chose Indian Monsoon Malabar beans as the base to my drink. These beans carry a distinctive taste profile and if you've drunk this kind of coffee you'll recognise it. I like it personally, tho' it's not to everyones taste. It's very 'coffee' tasting, lots of body, not much acidity. These beans had none of that, just flat and bitter!
No milk texturing in my Flat White either, just hot milk ... but when I say hot I really mean so scorched I had to sit at a table and wait to drink it. Proper milk has a sweetness to it and it's drinkable right away, say around the 65C mark. The mediocrity of this drink has only been beaten by Fazeley Social in Digbeth!
On a good day I'd have laughed and asked for a refund it was so bad. As I say, I wasn't 'at my best' and didn't fancy an argument so I supped slowly for a few minutes, but ultimately just walked off and left most of it for the bin just around the corner so the guy didn't feel too bad!
The beans they sell are left in jars slowly going stale in the light. There's all kinds of 'flavours' ... what this means generally is mediocre quality beans infused with some essence of flavour which the punter is expected to sip as if they've truly found coffee sophistication heaven. I didn't try any and I may be wrong, but as someone 'ex-trade' I suspect I'm not far off.
So, there's no way I can recommend this place based on my one visit, most specifically if you're into coffee. If you just need a drink then Ok, it's as good a choice in the market as any (the bar is low). I think the place trades on the appearance of offering 'proper coffee' and 'knowing what they're talking about' and that's really why I score them so low ... you think you'll get one thing and you get something very different. They don't deliver a decent product (at least on my visit) and they don't hold up to closer inspection. read more
