For those currently looking for reviews on what the high school is like, how the teachers are, what kind of programs are run here... I have no idea. I graduated in the year 2000. I did spend countless hours here over the course of 3 years from 1997-2000, and without doing too much of a walk down memory lane, I can tell you what it was like then. Population wise, I think the school saw around 800-900 kids come through its doors every day. The times were peaceful, fights weren't common, skipping class to head across the street for a slushy may have been more common. Classes ranged from your typical 13, 23, 33 and 10, 20, 30 to a couple of honours courses. There were a variety of extra curriculars as well... art, cosmetology, music, mechanics, gym, drafting, construction (the latter two being more my cup of tea). There was a healthy level of school sports happening as well. Did you know we had a girls rugby team before we had a boys rugby team? Oh yes... it's a fact I tell others with pride when I reminisce. I tried out for it before I even got to grade 10. Those were the days... The school organized some great student trips as well. In my gr 11 year, we headed on a study tour to Costa Rica. And in grade 12, most of my friends were in choir and band and going to England. There wasn't any way I was going to be the only one left behind, so I sang my way onto the trip through a choir tryout that last year. It's the only high school in the county as far as I'm aware. Unless you want to bus your kids in the other direction to Leduc (or even further), there really isn't much choice in terms of a public high school. In fact, it's pretty much your only choice. But it's a sizable school, it's undergone some upgrades in the last decade and my experience there was quite pleasant.

And while no one will mistake the league for being the Premier League in England, the players are very good. And perhaps more importantly they are clearly playing for the love of the game. The team plays in Clarke Stadium which the team (along with the city) have spent quite a bit of time renovating to help the team out including adding new bleachers on the east side. If you want to really get into the spirit you can sit in section 107 which is the supporters section. Just be prepared to stand and cheer all game long! Those players score points by passing people on the track. Only the Jammer in the lead gets the points. Games are quite exciting as it is faced paced and very active. These women and men are very athletic! The games are licensed so you can enjoy some bevvies. There is also food things to buy. They often do baked goods or canteen food. There are also merchandise tables to buy roller derby associated goods. At the last game we were at they even had a massage therapist doing free 5 minute chair massages. So come out and try something new and have some fun. Support some local athletes and have a unique date!

Independent wrestling companies come and go. The business is a shoe-string one for most operators, who build their promotions out of love for the sport rather than any great ambition to make millions. They can't afford to pay the wrestlers they hire huge amounts of money and constantly scramble to pull together shows with spit and last minute divine inspiration. Promoters will build a card (a program) with a double-handful of wrestlers who also work more for the love of their chosen profession. Pay-outs the equivalent of $20 and a handshake are not unheard of. There are very few of these professional athletes who will get the big break: a chance to try out for WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) - the one North American pro wrestling promotion that dominates television and can provide a wrestler with fame, money and a full time career. But despite these odds, wrestlers continue to pound their bodies once a month or more, driving across provinces and down into the States to work a show for a smidgen more than the cost of their gas. Monster Pro Wrestling has persisted despite the realities of the business, hard economic times and in the last couple of years, the death of one of the company's partners and ardent financial supporters. They have continued to provide their monthly live wrestling shows throughout the grim times. Fans and the odd reviewer consistently compare MPW shows to the Stampede Wrestling shows they remember as kids, when Stampede Wrestling continuously toured and was mandatory weekly television for most of western Canada. Recently, though, MPW are stepping up the quality and sheer entertainment level of their shows. They have been tapped as the chosen between-bands entertainment at Edmonton's annual Sonic Boom rock festival every September, performing in front of 20,000 music fans who find them just as fascinating as the bands they come to see. Recently, the special guest list at MPW is a who's-who of high powered wrestling: Honky Tonk Man and Dan "The Beast" Severn both appearing in the ring. Phil LaFon, former WWF wrestler, is a fixture on the card. The November 6 show had all the hallmarks and promise of great things to come from MPW. All the matches were solid and the standing-room only crowd were loud in their delight at the antics and entertainment provided. The highlight of the night, though, had to be the Ladders, Tables and Chairs match between Massive Damage and Nite. The match was eagerly anticipated throughout the evening by the fans, who had voted for the face-off on the promotion's website the month before. Massive Damage won the match, but both wrestlers ended up bloody and drained by the end of it. The match ended when Massive Damage dropped Nite from the top rope through a table that Nite had set on fire - a move that brought most of the audience to its feet in sheer disbelief and adulation. The carnage in the ring, once the lights came up at the end of the show, was possibly the most photographed view that night. It's this level of gut-wrenching sports entertainment that will push MPW into a class of its own in Western Canada. If you loved Stampede Wrestling in the seventies and early eighties, if you still watch WWE, then MPW is a great night of live pro wrestling you'll be sorry you missed if you don't go at least once to check them out.

The Oil Kings are geared towards a fun family night out. Not only is it good hockey (which is great if you are into the game) but they have lots of entertaining things happening throughout the game as well. They have fun little games, the T-shirt throws, the wave (who doesn't like that), sing-a-longs etc. The team also encourages lots of community involvement. We have gone with our hockey team and the kids have played on the ice, we've seen other teams there as the honour guard, and bench warming. It's so much fun to be part of the action. Every year the Oil Kings also does the teddy bear toss which raises both funds and teddy bears for Ronald McDonald House and it shows their community spirit which is fantastic to see in a local sports club. If you have never been out to a game I would say take advantage of their pricing - it's a great night out for a club or a family. While you might not be able to afford to go to an Oilers game you can definitely afford to the go to an Oil Kings game - same action and so much more fun for kids and families.

But for the price, the Oil Kings are of much better value. Both teams play at Rexall Place, and an Oilers seat that will cost you $200, will cost you about $25 for an Oil Kings game. Although it isn't top tier hockey, it is fast-paced and high energy because the players are trying to get drafted into the NHL and impress the scouts who are always paying attention. The Oil Kings sell themselves as being family-oriented hockey (probably because most people can afford to bring family to a game) so it is a totally different atmosphere than an Oilers game. There are a lot of games going on during the TV time outs that are geared towards kids. The club also has a lot of promotional nights to draw people in, such as Wiener Wednesdays ($2 weenies!), vuvuzela nights, 80s nights, and they will often give away merch to the first 1000 people through the door. We were at a game the other night and the Oil Kings scored five goals, so everyone got a $10 Earl's gift card in their way out. If you are looking to catch a quality hockey game and either can't get Oilers tickets or just want to spend less, the Oil Kings are a great option. It can be a fun night with friends if you don't want to splurge on the Oilers. Tickets range from $17-$35, plus service charge.
