My father was at St. Mary's for about five years in the Dementia/Alzheimer wing. Unfortunately,…read moremost times I visited he was improperly dressed with only a t-shirt even though he had a closet filled with sweaters and long-sleeved shirts. Activities were horrible and demeaning. My father would be alone most times or stuck in front of a soap opera. We encouraged the staff to please take my father to all the activities even though he'd say no thank you. We had opera CD's and a CD player for him to listen to and no one ever turned it on for him. He just languished away with hardly any attention from the staff. One good comment is that the food was good. Be sure to advocate for your loved one.

The facilities are exceptional, and the care I received and the staff were even better. Going from one facility (hospital trauma unit) to another (rehab.), you never know for sure if t's a positive or negative move until the decision and transfer is done. This was a very positive change for me. My therapists (OT/PT) were outstanding. The nursing staff was caring and accommodating to my individual needs. Staff coordination with my insurance was thoughtful and thorough. I had regular visits from administrative staff to be sure that my needs were being met by regular staff, and that any questions I might have had were answered. I found the atmosphere nurturing, encouraging, personal, and I connected with many of the staff one-on-one, especially those I interacted with routinely. I can fully recommend this facility and its care as five-star in every way.

My parents were prisoners there from 1990's until 2005. They insisted on staying together in one…read moreroom so this was our only option. It was the most horrible experience that I am still having nightmares about. The social worker (AS) was absolutely horrible. She had previously been A social worker in a juvenile detention center and she treated the residents with suspicion as though they were juvenile delinquents. That woman was eventually fired after my parents had passed but the damage was done. When my father was old and sick she asked me if he thought it was time to give up and die. My mother had every single thing stolen from her. Everything. This social worker put her in a room, after my father died, with a crazy woman who stole everything from my mother. I went to visit and the drawers were empty her closets were empty all of her jewelry was gone every knickknack she ever owned had been stolen. Like I said this is a nightmare I have to live with for the rest of my life. They were so neglected and because I lived out of state I would call constantly and of course I was told everything was fine. When I would visit everything was not fine and I would raise holy hell. Stay as far away from this hell hole as possible....well, unless you hate your loved one.

Jess, the director, was helpful and kind through the process. The private rooms are decent sized and they allowed us to hang pictures and make the space her own. It's a small facility with only 14 residents so residents feel a part of a small community rather than an institution. It's such a relief my mom is happy and we'll cared for!

I have never felt more comfortable in a rehabilitation facility in my life, you are in amazing hands here at encompass. I don't leave a lot of reviews but I couldn't let it go unsaid that I think everyone should aim to get placed into encompass for any type of rehabilitation. Everyone from the custodians to the big wigs have been extremely motivating and positive and you can tell they genuinely care about you and want to see you recover. Oh and the food is actually really good most of the other reviews I have seen about encompass have been about how bad the food is and they are not true at all!!!

My wife underwent an extensive three-level spinal fusion, with surgery performed from both the…read morefront and back. She did well and was discharged four days later, taking only oral Tylenol. At that point, she could walk only about 40 feet, so she was sent to Encompass Rehab Hospital in Fitchburg for postoperative rehabilitation. They confined her to bed for the first 17 hours, allowing her only to sit (after she complained) in a recliner with no back support. The chair also required considerable force to push back into the reclining position. The following morning, they had her walk down and back along a hallway more than 900 feet long (no exaggeration) just to begin a half-hour physical therapy session. There were multiple PT sessions each day. She rapidly developed a foot drop and excruciating pain. The facility's physician and nurse were interested only in giving her morphine for the pain, without investigating its cause. After this type of surgery, a hematoma is a significant possibility and would represent a surgical emergency prevent permanent nerve damage and muscle loss. At 1:30 a.m. on the third day, I got her out of there and took her to the Meritor ER, where the doctors ordered the appropriate imaging. They treated her for the severe inflammation and pain that had occured because of the excessive activity and recommended we not return to Encompass but to go home and rest. Two weeks later, she remains in great pain controlled with taking narcotics, muscle relaxants, and other medications. Thankfully, her muscle strength is coming back. In what world does it make sense to push a postoperative patient from walking 40 feet one day to nearly half a mile the next!?!? These consequences could easily have been prevented if the facility's staff had communicated with her surgeon, as the ER staff did, or had even bothered to ask my wife about her activity level in the hospital the day before she arrived at Encompass. They may have great physical therapists. Unfortunately, they seem to lack an ounce of common sense!!! Sadly, my wife is still paying the price.
