The owner and all the staff are Italian, giving the place a proper feeling of authenticity. They are all super friendly and chatty, especially if you make the effort to mutter a few words in Italian as my boyfriend likes to do! They have the usual selection of hot drinks, freshly baked cakes and Italian treats such as panetonne and pandoro. The hot food is a little limited but what they do, they do extremely well. I would highly recommend the tortillas - warmed and served with a side salad, and the paninis are pretty good too. They are children and dog friendly, the whole upper floor is especially for kids with a selection of books and toys available to keep them occupied while mums and dads sip their lattes uninterrupted. I think it is they family vibe that gives this place such a nice feeling, it's almost like spending a few hours in Mamma's casa in Napoli!

We were feeling a little peckish but not massively so, so Scott and I decided to get a few small plates to share. Hummus and Crispbreads with walnuts: it was okay, nowhere near enough Hummus and the Crispbreads weren't great. I wouldn't have this again. Chicken wings: can't go wrong with chicken wings, they were crisp and full of flavor. The ailoi was nice too. Yerba Smoked Beef: now this was a delight! Portion was quite small but it more than made up for it in flavour. I think this was my favourite out of the dishes. Empanadas. We had a ground beef and and chorizo and cheese Empanada and they were both divine. Decent size, the pastry was thick but light at the same time and didn't give us a heavy feeling afterwards. Highly recommended. I had a drink of the homemade lemonade, which at £2.95 I thought was outrageous. It was essentially a glass of water with a bit of lemon squeezed in, plus a stick thyme as a garnish. Tasteless and not worth it. Overall I'd give Cau 3.5 stars. It was good, but my experience at the one in Amsterdam was excellent.

They have an impressive range of burgers and there is no distinction between meat or veggie types. You simply choose the type and whether it is a meat or veggie pattie. This is a small niggle and your order will always be cooked fresh, including the fries. They also serve some awesome milkshakes, which I would recommend. The staff are general Brightonians, but the service and preparation is conscientious. The diner can get pretty busy at pub kicking out time, but they do have a fair number of tables. The diner is also a good place to see what is happening in the city over the next few months; there a re loads of fliers and suchlike for upcoming events.
