This was my first time seeing the Orchard Park Library. It had a great vibe to it. The librarian…read moredesk is right in the round, in the center of the building. There is a Bills flag hanging proudly. There is also a seed library in the back entrance of the library before you walk in, which is great. There is a great kids section. When I went this little girl was playing and she kept saying to her mom, "Bye honey, I'm going to the store. Be back soon." I was cracking up. This library was also having a little book sale near the back entrance. Librarian was friendly. Great location. Great parking.

They also had a book sale going on where some of the books were 4/$1! The library has big shelves of fiction and non-fiction, and lower shelves for the kids. They have a big collection of local history as well as travel books and graphic novels. I like that the non-fiction sections are labeled on the top of the shelves by category. There are nice displays throughout the library. The library seemed very busy while we were there, but perhaps the book sale drew people in. There are a bunch of PCs and lots of places to sit, including comfy chairs, couches, and tables. They're spread out throughout the library so you can sit tucked away if you'd like to. Big parking lot and places to walk nearby too (like the caboose behind the library or the park across the street).

This review isn't for the Central library location itself, but really for the Buffalo and Erie…read moreCounty Public Library system as a whole. Since this is the main library system location, where most administrative offices are housed, I'll park this review here. There are a few things about the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library system I would like to praise: ** The library system is great at keeping new, popular books in stock. But what if you want a book that isn't new? And/or isn't very popular? You can easily request it be purchased with an online form. If the book is available from a vendor the library can use, they will order it for you and send it to your preferred branch for pick up. I have done this many times. Most books I have requested can be ordered. And oftentimes within less than 24 hours of entering my purchase request online, a library representative emails me back that the order has been placed--a lightening fast response! It can take a few weeks to get the book in your hands. Overall, the library system offers EXCEPTIONAL patron service with book purchases! ** My mom is an avid reader. Recently she had to upsize to large-print books. She is a weekly regular user of the library system's large print collection. I've always seen the shelves for large print, but didn't give them much thought. Until at Christmastime, when I went to buy a few large-print books for my mom, and WOW, they are pricey! So I have to give a shout out to the library for doing a wonderful job at keeping large-print titles in stock for our WNY community sight-impaired folks. These books would definitely be cost-prohibitive to have to buy ourselves, especially at the pace my mom reads. New, popular large-print books are added regularly. And I'm usually first in line to grab them for my mom! :-D ** During pandemic times, the library system has had a long break in charging hold fees. I hold materials all the time, for the ease of picking them up at my preferred branch. Usually when you hold a material, there is a hold fee charged (.50 for books, $1 for media). This is no issue for me, I do not mind covering some of the cost of transferring things between branches. But for at least a couple months now, the library system has entirely waived hold fees. This is fantastic because you can hold items (all done online), the librarian puts them all together for you at your preferred branch as they arrive, and you have an easy one-stop-grab-and-checkout with all of your requested goodies. If you have any reservations about perusing the physical library during COVID, you can easily do it all online, select your items, hold them, and grab-and-go at the branch, easy-peasy! ** Also during COVID, the library system has many branches that offer walk-up and/or curbside pick-up. At my preferred branch, walk-up is available. I simply call the library to check out my holds (again, a great reason for holding, the library can grab it all in one spot), they librarian checks them out, they bag it up, and I stop by later to grab my things. At my branch, you go in the back door hallway, ring a bell, and they bring your bag to a long table which you are easily able to socially-distance-grab your checkouts. I am at the library on a weekly basis. My whole family enjoys checking out a variety of materials, the hubbs and I, our kids, and my parents. But materials checkout is really the tip of the iceberg with the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library system offerings. A quick scan of their website lists an ABUNDANCE of other services and events. A resolution of mine is to use more of these great offerings this year. We're starting with a virtual crafting event for our teen daughter this week, and already picked up the supplies. I'm looking forward to another great year of patronizing our top-notch, much-loved library system in WNY. Thank you so very much for everything that you do to enrich our community. And happy reading to all!

The historic exterior beckoned to me, as the building has been up since 1889. I love how this library is truly the cornerstone of the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library System and is just a great addition to Jamestown as a whole. Upon entering, the first thing I noticed was the stacks. There are two floors full of books of various subjects and content. Use the stairs off to the side to peruse the selections. The main library floor is an open concept, and there is a bridge connecting the two sides of the second floor. You'll have to visit to really see what I mean on this one, but it's worth the visit, I promise. The big draw for us, seeing as our library cards are for another library system, was the huge used book sale. The cheapest paperbacks started at $.50 and ranged to $2 for hardcovers. We found some amazing hidden treasures that were clearly donated over the years, to our benefit. It was like the used bookstore selection of my dreams, albeit on a much smaller scale. The only thing I didn't love about it was that the sale shelves clearly held circulating materials once, which pulls at my library nerd heartstrings, but I digress. At least when I went upstairs there were a ton of materials available, some of which clearly hadn't been checked out in awhile. Boost the circulation statistics! I was amused by the microfilm machine available for use, and even more impressed by the big puzzle they set out for patrons to assemble as a way of de-stressing. What a great idea for patrons who just need to relax and use their brains at the same time! I want to see puzzles in every library, though I advocate a more user friendly microfilm to go with it. I can't even tell you how often I've come so close to destroying archived periodicals. Finally, the library does have a dedicated children's room, but no dedicated teen space. This may just be a product of the users, but it's something I'd like to see in a central branch library. The young adult materials are mixed in on the second floor, but do have their own shelves. I'd happily spend some time in this library again if I ever find myself both in Jamestown and with some hours to fill. Keep up the good work, Prendergast Library!
