I can't say I've visited any other federal prisons so I'm giving this rating specifically with…read moreregard to the visitation experience. If visitation here is roughly the same as most other low security federal facilities then I would say our tax dollars are not being used efficiently. Visitation is first come first serve and the car line outside of the gate starts early. On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, I arrived at 5:30am and I was 17th in line. Fortunately when they open the gate at 8:00am they give each car a restaurant style pager/buzzer numbered sequentially so it's fair for those who get up super early and wait in their cars. Once in the parking lot there are no signs or instructions to help you understand how to prepare for visitation or what comes next. If you did your homework and found the visitation rules online beforehand you will find those instructions don't match the actual process. I was lucky enough to have the family of my friend tell me what to expect. If you're not so lucky, ask the officer inside and hopefully s/he will give you a clue. While we waited, our pager beeped confusingly but never flashed or vibrated as they do in a restaurant. The only way we knew our number was up was to keep checking in with the small group of eager visitors lingering outside the building keeping track... although a label on the pager instructs you to remain in your vehicle until called. Once inside the administration building you're screened similar to airport security except you can bring in essentially nothing other than $20 in 5's and 1's, and your car key. My girlfriend was wearing a normal fitted v-neck t-shirt and the officer warned her that it was too revealing and form fitting and he would only let her in if she agreed to keep her jacket on. Basically, to get inside you're made to feel like a prisoner yourself. After screening, you're escorted in small groups into the prison to the visitation room. The room is clean and filled with chairs and many vending machines with what I consider nasty food. No surprise and I don't really expect anything better. If you're among the first 12 or so into visitation you'll see your person shortly but if you're not then you will have to wait until after "count", which happens about 6 times a day. So we waited in the visitation room from 9:30am until 11:00am to see our friend, that's about 1/3 of the visitation period. The biggest disappointment is not being able to go outside of the visitation building to the fenced and secured outdoor space... which is well inside of the entirely secured prison facility. While the officers were professional and all the ones I interacted with had a good disposition, the visitation process is excessively slow, confusing, antiquated, and quite simply stupid. As taxpayers funding this facility's operation we deserve a more streamlined and efficient process.
