It was a great way to spend a little less than an hour before lunch. There was nothing political about it and our tour guide (Kaylee?) was excellent and knew so many of the facts we asked her (she had also given us fantastic suggestions on where to eat and what else to do nearby). We walked through restored areas of a living room, kitchen, nursery, George W's childhood bedroom, bathroom, photos of the family, a history of Midland, a baseball room, and a recreated outside area. We received a tour as a homeschool group. The lady who showed us around (I cannot remember her name…read morenow) was fantastic! She knew the history well and made the tour a real treat. Some of the furniture pieces used to stage the house were real elegant and fun to see. They have an original bedroom set to the White family made of wood, in pristine condition, incredible! The rotary phone actually works and my child was able to make a local call on it. The house sits on the highest natural point in Odessa and grows pretty much anything they want to plant. The house has suffered some vandalism and made me long for simple days of the past where people had work to do and didn't go around cutting up other peoples trees and damaging property. All in all I loved this field trip offered to us and highly recommend going if you can. I know the city doesn't want much to do with this historical site, which is a real shame. If the city became involved this historical site might be here for future generations of people. I know they are struggling to keep it as it is. It's a real gem.

The old CAF headquarters building is closed and is not being maintained by anyone because the city of Midland has taken over it. The hanger has many planes in it including an AT11 that was stationed at the airfield during WWII and Fast Eagle 102 which is an F14 and is the first F14 to shut down an enemy aircraft.

Would not want to go now at all. After research I found they only lived here a very short time of 4 yrs so really not much in the Bush history happened here. Just trying to make a buck off a very small segment of the Bush timeline.

Cute little local museum to visit if you are staying at Fort Stockton or just passing by…read more Check in at the front with the host, admission is $3. It's basically a self guided tour that you walk through all rooms. The ground is beautiful and well kept... Staffs here were all very friendly and would chat with you if you want to know more about the history or about the town. i was asking them where can I find a roadrunner since the city symbol is a roadrunner :XD They told me to take my time taking as many photos as I want! I was told to go few blocks down to visit the Old Fort...which I believe I happened to drive by earlier but it wasn't well marked on the map. Also it looked like someone is still living there. (Later I was told there are still people live at the old officer quads) This museum is part of my lovely memories of the TX road trip:)

West of the Pecos Museum resides in Pecos, TX near the tracks where trains tend to zoom by quickly…read more As we walked in on January 13, 2024, we were immediately greeted by Ms. Lara who was a great information provider at the beginning of our self-guided tour through the three-story museum. At the time, her credit/debit card machines were down so thank goodness my mom brought enough cash. Lol. Tickets were as follows: Adults = $10 Senior citizens = $9 Children = $5 The building combines what used to be a saloon and later a hotel. There was a slew of information that we didn't get to read or skim because it was blocked off by half doors or locked screen doors. In the saloon, there was an electronic, animated bartender that supposedly mimicked the real bartender who was present when the shootout/murder happened. My oldest daughter thought his eyes were creepy. Lol. There was a theater room for patrons who are physically unable to climb the staircases... a video tour film was made about the history of the museum. The gift shop was actually a big hit for my all-girls group of four. I bought a recipe book put together by all the locals of Pecos, including our museum docent. My daughters loved the rocks, arrowheads, and a t-shirt... plus the cantaloupe-flavored jelly beans! Note: The sweetest, best cantaloupes come from Pecos! Ms. Lara reminded my young daughters to recite to her their favorite part of the museum. She kindly gave them a couple of pieces of candy for doing so. Free parking. Restrooms in the courtyard area which can be rented out for parties, weddings, etc. A statue of "Pecos Bill" is near the parking lot as are the 8-ft tall brightly-painted cowboy boots. Also within walking distance was the Texas Rodeo Hall of Fame, but they had already closed. Love the ranching & military history of this area. Don't let it be forgotten!

This was a very cool historic fort to stop at and walk around to stretch our legs on our road trip…read moreacross Texas. The fort itself has lost many of its original buildings due to time or (unfortunately) the city selling them off to private interests, but the team that works here is doing their best to preserve what they can. The inside of the visitor center has a ton of great information about the location and 2 short videos you can watch that has a lot of historic photos that really bring the space to life. The young man working here was so kind and helpful and actually gave us a guided tour of the buildings, unlocking the barracks so we could go inside and see how they used to be set up, learn about them using mesquite wood to cook, and the incredible company of black soldiers known as the Buffalo Soldiers who were at this fort. Even more interesting was when he let us into the old guardhouse where soldiers were jailed when they broke the rules. It was cool to see the inside of the cells and walk around, but apparently there's also an unexplained figure that sometimes appears inside the guardhouse (visible through the locked gate at the entrance) that disappears as you get closer. The building is locked tight and there's no way out, so whether you believe or not we loved getting this little ghost story on top of the historic tour of the fort. A great stop if you're on a trip and want to stretch your legs and learn a little while you do!

They did a great job recreating it (at a smaller scale, of course) but it's still amazing to see up close, and you're allowed to walk through the pillars here, whereas in the UK you can't get anywhere near the actual Stonehenge pillars. We were on a road trip and when I heard about this place, I knew we had to swing by and experience it for ourselves. It was only about 15 minutes out of the car, but when you're driving across the massive emptiness of West Texas, every cool stop is worth the chance to stretch your legs.
