He was supportive and patient; understanding this was a huge undertaking for me. We went over my xrays at the first visit and he thoroughly explained that the joint was beyond anything other than replacement. He is calm, reassuring & unrushed. We spoke briefly in the O.R. prior to sedation & he again reassured me. Dr. Murray checked in the next morning. I had very little pain from the procedure, mostly just some weakness from the dissection of the muscles. I have no problem giving Dr. Murray an enthusiastic thumbs up; he and his PA Alex are great as well as his office staff.

I wasn't able to see my regular GYN at first, so I saw two others--one who diagnosed me with a bladder prolapse and Dr. Rau, who I saw three times in two weeks. Eventually, I was able to be seen by Dr. Graziani (my regular), and I saw her twice in one week--so five visits in less than 10 days. Each visit with Dr. Rau felt like a dead end. I felt like I was talking to a wall. He dismissed my pain entirely, insisted the prolapse was "mild," and showed no concern for the fact that I could barely function. I left one appointment in tears. I'm currently out of work because of the pain. I'm in agony, and it felt like no one believed me. Do you know how belittling and isolating that feels? Dr. Rau never acknowledged my pain or made any real effort to help. When I brought up my CT Paid Leave paperwork, he brushed it off, saying it takes months to process. I've been on leave before--it doesn't. He said the paperwork is hard without a diagnosis... yet I had one: a prolapse. Even if pay was delayed, I'd get it eventually. Plus, how can I afford this kind of care without support? Shouldn't a doctor at least try?! Pathetic. Don't doctors realize that stress--especially financial stress--worsens pain? Being dismissed by your provider while worrying about income only adds to the suffering. I have hypermobility syndrome, which can amplify pain. He didn't consider it. I kept repeating how much pain I was in--three visits--and he just stared at me, occasionally bringing up unrelated things like my IUD and ovulation. He did not care. I said it felt like a hernia and mentioned that a nerve had been cut during prior surgery. He didn't palpate the area, didn't listen, didn't ask questions, didn't even consider imaging. Nothing. I asked for an ultrasound and was upset to find out it was transvaginal - useless for prolapses. Then why order it? Still in pain and stuck in bed, I did my own research. That's how I learned about pessaries. I brought it up to Dr. Graziani, who said it was a great idea. She asked me to bear down--something Dr. Rau and the other doctor never did. As soon as I did, she said, "Oh yeah, it's definitely coming out." The next day, I was fitted with a pessary--and the pain? Gone. I don't know what upsets me more: that Dr. Rau dismissed my symptoms or that I could've been out of pain a week earlier if someone had listened. No one even brought up the option. That's absurd. How dare Dr. Rau--and others--dismiss a patient like that. How many people are walking around in pain because a doctor decided their symptoms weren't "severe enough"? Based on what--just looking? He wouldn't even palpate the area I said felt herniated! He did not care. Dr. Rau is absolutely horrible. No one should have to go through what I experienced. On top of the pain, I was stressed about whether I'd get paid. Thankfully, my rheumatologist stepped in to handle the paperwork--something this office should've done without questioning the amount of pain I have been in. Why is it such a battle? How can they expect someone in this kind of pain to work? It's inexcusable. If you're in pain, please listen to your body. Don't give up. Advocate for yourself--and if a doctor won't take you seriously, find one who will. Healthcare is a business, shop elsewhere if you aren't happy. You deserve to be heard, believed, and helped. *UPDATE* I'm writing this 4 days later. When the pessary loses suction, the pain comes back and it's unbearable. Turns out, I need surgery, and it's scheduled for tomorrow. I DO NOT recommend Dr. Rau!

I was fortunate to get an appointment with doctor Robert K, Gildersleeve in Hebron, a few days later. I must share that I was immediately impressed with the welcoming care I received from the doctor's office staff and medical assistants and even more impressed when I met Dr. Gildersleeve, whose bedside manner was beyond compare. Dr. Gildersleeve gently handled my anxiety of my worst case scenario thoughts of having cervical cancer. He assured me that we would properly address my concerns. Because of my anxiety during an internal exam, Dr. Gildersleeve sent me to his Windham office a few days later for an internal scanning of my uterus. Mary, the radiologist was kind, gentle and reassuring, as she performed the procedure. Most surprising was the call I received from Dr. Gildersleeve hours after the procedure to see how I was doing. A few weeks later, I had minor surgery at Windham Hospital that resulted in the successful removal of a fibroid that was pressed against my uterus that was causing the bleeding. I was impressed with the follow-up visit with Dr. Gildersleeve as well. The bottom line is that when I first encountered this medical dilemma, I just knew I was going to Yale to have this matter addressed. However today, I am so glad that I stumbled upon Dr. Gildersleeve's Mansfield OBGYN offices in Hebron and Mansfield whom I believe provided me with medical care that was just as good, in fact, even better care that I would have received at Yale. I highly recommend Dr. Gildersleeve and the Mansfield OBGYN, Hebron/Mansfield to address your feminine medical issues. I trust her so much I've recommended her many times and also have my young adult daughters seeing her now, and they both have health issues. She's been spot on with every diagnosis - her instincts and knowledge are amazing - but has always had us have the appropriate tests to confirm her. She's kind, attentive and a little sassy which we find perfect to offset the tension of these visits which if we're honest no one looks forward to! The staff are friendly and welcoming and he wait times are rarely more than a few minutes. Oh and they have a radiologist in the next office that does mammograms, ultrasound and bone density tests! Honestly shocked by anyone who is negative about this office as it's the best I could ever wish for!
