ahh I must say, I do miss Echo Hill now that we're in CA. As I was recently shopping for some flours and spices, I realized I never reviewed one of my favorite go-to places for such things. I love to bake and cook, so although this quaint, unassuming store was a bit of a drive, I happily made it on a regular basis when living in PA. It's out in the middle of the country...let's put it this way, you wouldn't run into it while out and about! I see they now have a website which includes a charming history of this family-owned business dating back to 1955 when the current owner's father purchased the property, as well as where the name "Echo Hill" comes from! I believe almost all the employees are family and everyone is always friendly and helpful. Granted, I haven't been here since moving out of state in 2020 and from reading some of the reviews, it seems their prices (like everyone else's) have increased, but this store always had the biggest selection of grains, flours, nuts, and spices, as well as packaging for homemade food gifts. I always found their selection and pricing to be awesome and worth the drive! read more

Visited family in the area and traveled into the countryside to this quaint store with my sister. Our goals were simple: she would pick up a few items and I would browse. Upon first entry, I noticed the modest size of the interior. The checkout line was long but seems to move at a fair pace. Although a smaller store, the owners pack in the goods. I was amazed by the varieties and brands of organic and healthy ingredients and foods. For flour, one side of an aisle (20-25 ft long) was dedicated to many different ground grains, packaged in different pound sizes. Prices of items were fair for being located in an isolated area. Spices, pickles, syrups, oils, bulk nuts and trail mix, frozen berries, environmentally-friendly cleaners and more await your arrival. I'll visit again when I'm in the area. read more

We now live in central Pennsy, but when we lived in NJ, I would travel to Echo Hill for bulk grains and ingredients as I am a health coach and raised my family on farm-grown organic food, always homemade! My wife and I passed through this area en route to another store during the Summer and decided to stop in to check out their goods. The pictures above say it all. This place is chocked full of dried goods, candies, jams, organic stuff, health food, etc. Prices were ok to good. I bought a bag of Fruit Tootsie Rolls. Because this place is off-the-beaten path, it will not be a go-to place for us and I doubt I'll make it back due to distance from home. read more

I grew up going to Echo Hill with my mom, so the spicy smell when you walk in brings back memories. Now I appreciate it for the great deals on things like loose teas and vitamins, and the all natural products you can find like Kiss My Face lotion and Dr Bronner's soaps. When I was going on a heavy probiotic diet because of some tummy troubles I stopped here and got Kim Chee and Kombucha and noticed they also have goat cheese and soy milk and a lot of other natural foods which might be hard to find. Definitely worth checking out if there's a gluten free eater in your household. There's also a ton of bulk products which are a great price because the packaging is minimal and they are offered in different sizes. One secret weapon that I get here is the coleslaw dressing mix. Follow the recipe on the bag, add to shredded cabbage and be the hero at the potluck or picnic. Another hard to find item is Butterbeer soda, which I have never seen in any other store. So harry potter fans, apparate on over and check it out. read more

This used to be our go to store for good prices, good quality. As of lately they seem to have really pushed their prices. My wife found that Giant had better prices on some items. And much of what I buy, well no point in going out of our way to go to Echo Hill, they have really raised their prices. Went back to buying online, looks like the almighty dollar has got to these people. read more

Impressive selection! Coming from the DC area, we were travelling home to Allentown and a friend told us about Echo Hill. The prices vary - some items are a deal but many were on par with what we've paid around here. King Arthur Flour (non-organic) was a great price. Their bulk natural peanut butter was a bit more per pound than Whole Foods, but whipped in a way that it doesn't separate - great! My fiance found pasta shapes that he grew up with, while not a deal, they weren't over priced, either. I do like how everything has very minimal packaging. If you're into cake/cookie decorating - wow! Sprinkles of every type and shape, and the biggest container of red food dye I've ever seen in my life. In addition to the bulk foods they have a great selection of current organic and other "hippie" brands. Certainly a place to check out, it's not far off 222 and you'll be inspired to cook or bake something afterwards! read more

You would never believe all the vegan products way out on a country road behind Fleetwood. Bulk stuff is not in bins but usually in a medium and large bagged portion. They take credit cards and have bulk frozen items too. Great for bread baking supplies. Essential oils, soap, lotion, organic coffee. Very busy every time I have been here. Beautiful country out there too. There were very friendly spring lambs outside in the pen next door when I was here last. So incredibly sweet and beautiful, but they are not pets and will be destined for someone's plate, sad to think about. read more

I shop here weekly. Almond milk and soy milk is a dollar cheaper then in the grocery store. You can bulk buy things and special order items also. I have bought cases of green bars, so much cheaper then buying them at chain stores. Spices here are fresh. Pretty much everything is because this is a busy place. It is not a health food store in the traditional sense, it is a country store. It is Amish run and caters to their tastes. Meaning They also have bulk candy and candy making items. They have many hard to find items for special diets, such as gluten-free, dairy-free diet, and sugar substitutes. Many organic items at affordable prices. Fell free to ask me about this place. If I could give this shop six stars, I definitely would. This is an incredible place! First of all, everything is super inexpensive. They sell all kinds of kitchen staples, baking ingredients, snacks, candies, beauty products, dairy products, and organic items. You can buy many of the products in bulk, driving the already amazing prices down even further. My boyfriend and I stocked up on a big bundle of delicious country treats for under ten dollars. I've never seen a store like this, they have just about everything you could ever think of. Their spices are so much cheaper than the grocery store and in larger containers. Same quality, larger selection. If you like mixed nuts and dried fruits, try their snack mixes they are of excellent quality. I made fruitcakes this Christmas using a dozen different dried fruits I purchased here. I'm lucky to live only a few miles from here, we go once a month for various needs. I'm not into alternative diets (gluten free, etc) but they also have a good selection of these items as well as natural sweeteners and local honey. read more

I stopped here today to pick up some staples. This is really the best place to get ingredients for baking and cooking. I get all my flours, sugars, yeasts, and things like that here. Everything is in bulk, so prices are cheaper. They sell King Arthur flour which is a plus too. My favorite part is that they have harder to find ingredients such as pizza dough flour. They have many different oils, vinegars, and things like that. Be sure to check out the spices, which are cheaper. They even had a variety of cinnamons to pick from. On the weekends I've seen baked goods and veggies for sale outside, so that's another bonus. read more

As a natural foods consumer, I was happy to find this little gem while visiting my wife's family in Fleetwood. I'm not sure why any previous posters felt this place was dirty. I found it to be very clean, well stocked and the Amish folks that ran it to be swift, efficiant and friendly. They also accept SNAP cards (food stamp cards) and ship through their website. My in laws have lived in the Reading area for decades and NONE of them knew of this place. The only pitfall? They're only open from 8-5pm and closed on Sundays....but being that they're Amish (or Mennonite?), this really did not surprise me. The prices are awesome, the selections are plentiful....and they sell RAW MILK!! This is something that is ILLEGAL in Colorado, where I live (but we are planning to move to PA within the next few years), but I was pretty pleased to find it by the gallon!! They have a small but well stocked deli case and more spices, preserves, bulk goods and baking supplies than I know what to do with. This culinary foodie was in HOG HEAVEN! We will be back at least once between now and the day we go back home! When we move to Reading, this WILL be my major source for groceries... read more

I moved to Philadelphia about a year ago, and I must say, I miss this store so much. As a baker, finding different types of flour like cake, pastry, whole wheat, etc, AND at such a great price is really very difficult. Echo Hill has it all. I love Echo Hill -- they have an amazing variety and good prices -- far cheaper than any other healthy/bulk shop in the area. I love their store-made nut butters. I recently bought some peanut butter from another vendor and it was twice as expensive and half as good as Echo Hill's. I learned my lesson -- Echo Hill forever! A little country store in the middle of no where.. tons of dry baking products cheap.. you can also buy in bulk save even more. Candy and snacks honey all those odd baking products this place has it all. We shop there weekly. Not a huge selection of lunch meat but what they do have is cheaper then anything around..run by the Dutch it's like going back in time to the good old days.. my only complaints are they don't carry cheese to go with the lunch meat and not open on Sundays. They only have one bad review and that person said it was dirty.. I go in weekly and I will tell you first hand I see them dusting and cleaning regularly.. I think someone just like to complain.. I would give it 5-5 on cleanliness.. and give it 7 stars overall if I could.. read more

I LOVE this place !!! Every trip from the West coast to see my Aunt, I go here at least twice. If you like to cook, bake or just check out fun snack foods you might have never seen before this is the place for you. Tons of jams and butters (like peach butter or apple butter etc..) All kinds of fours, and I mean they have flour made from things you didn't know they could make flour from !! A huge selection of spices, extracts, baking chocolates. Sausage making equiptment ranging from books to castings and spice mixtures to meat grinders. Bagged candies, pretzels, dried fruits and nuts. A deli section, a big vitamin section, olive oils, chips, teas....just tons of fun stuff !!! Most of it is organic non GMO leaning to boot. They buy a lot of stuff in bulk and repackage it and much of it you can buy at a better price then at your local grocery store. In my opinion the prices for most things are really, really good here. I went to this store for my grandson who is allergic to flour, wheat,soy and peanuts. He just turn one on December 26, 2008. My daughter (his Mommy) took me to this store and I was amazed. My grandson can now eat pancakes made from rice flour and cookies too. Thanks to this wonderful store. They have everything under the sun. Always worth the drive to visit this country store. I usually try to pair it up with a monthly trip to Leesport to visit the Farmer's Market there. It is a bit out-of-the-way from Montgomery County but always worth the trip over the mountain. If you are a baker or put up your own foods from your garden, they have all the essentials. read more

This store is amazing - out in the middle of the cornfields (28 miles from my home in Whitehall, south on Rt. 222), it has the biggest selection of bulk products that I have ever seen in one place, even in California. Rows and rows of shelves with a huge variety of flours, spices, whole grains, pasta, mixes of all kinds, eco-friendly cleaning supplies, organic cereals - some stuff you can find at a health food store or the health food section of your super market, but Echo Hills has a much greater variety and in most cases, is way less expensive. it's the bulk food section that makes the trip worthwhile for me. There is a small refrigerator section with a variety of cheeses and organic frozen stuff - Wegman's beats them in this particular area with a greater selection of cheeses and frozen organic food. This probably serves people okay who don't have access to a Wegman's. A small deli department has a small variety of meats that also can be found in greater variety elsewhere. These things are a convenience, but not what I would make the trip out there for. I can't begin to list the things they have. I didn't need much because I'd just done my road trip to Trader Joe's in Jenkintown, Costco in Montomeryville, Swann's and the bread outlet in Quakertown- over 100 miles round trip. Next time I'll save myself some driving and just go out to Echo Hills! Check out driving directions carefully as it is just a little tricky to find the first time - it is literally out in the cornfields! read more
