Indian Echo Caverns were absolutely amazing. Out front, there are tons of animals such as peacocks, goats (new baby ones that are just over a month old too), a turkey, and a llama. Those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head. You buy your tickets in the gift shop. Inside the establishment, you can buy amazing and beautiful stones to fill up pouches with as well as many others mementos. We didn't have to wait long for our tour, and the kids used the time to look at everything in the gift shop. There is a big mining area to the right of the gift shop. We didn't do that, and I believe it costs extra. There are restrooms on sight. You walk down just over 70 stairs to get to the entrance to the cave. Tours are in groups, and I would recommend a jacket or heavy sweater with jeans as the cave is quite brisk. The caverns have lighted areas, and our guide pointed out all kinds of cool things to us accompanied by stories, told us the history about the caverns and the family who own them, talked about the Indians who used to live close to that area, and we were able to take a lot of pictures. Whatever you do, do not touch the rocks. The oils in our skin makes the rocks not grow in the way they are supposed to and are meant to. It was described to us as water and oil don't mix well, and to think of the rocks as water and our hands as oil. Areas of rock that were touched from past inhabitants show the aftermath of where a person has touched the rock. You can see what went wrong after they were touched mostly by the shape they took on and it will be clear when you see them why you shouldn't. There are many caverns and hallways you go down. By far my favorite part of this outing was Crystal Lake. The blue turquoise color with the backdrop of the rocks and formation is absolutely stunning. I could sit there for a while staring at it. I would definitely wear closed shoes or sneakers. The grounds are wet with puddles in some areas, are rather large can soak your shoe. We had a nice amount of time on the tour but I wish I could've stayed in there longer. You must be with a guide at all times. The staff was very kind, getting a ticket and the process was very easy. Until our group was called, we all enjoyed ourselves keeping busy until we were set to go. This was a big fascination to me and I'm glad I got to visit this miraculous wonder existing below our feet. I highly recommend this tour. The parking in the lot is free and plentiful. The property also has a small playground for the kiddos.You are encouraged by the staff to visit and pet the animals so this is a win win for the family's and the animals. This place is definitely a gem out in the middle of no where. It caught our eye the day we drove up from Chesapeake. We came about 3:30 on a Thursday and since they close at 5pm we were unsure if they were even able to fit us in a tour. They sure did! For about $50 me, hubby, & our little one got to have a tour that lasted about 45 minutes. I forgot our tour guides name, but he did an awesome job showing us the caverns and telling us jokes and stories. It was a steady 52° underground and at the lowest, we were about 100ft below ground. Everything down below was spectacular! They also had a playground for the kids, a butterfly garden, mining for the little ones, and a petting zoo. Their gift shop had quite a lot of trinkets, home decor, gifts, rocks and gems, and even apparel. Everyone was very friendly. It's definitely worth your time to go!! read more

A good cavern experience. We have done several of these across a few states (Luray Caverns in VA, Smoke Hole Caverns in WV). They are all very similar and they all have been good. The difference with Indian Echo is the outdoor activities like the mining set up for kids and the petting zoo with goats and alpacas and the large bird pen with peacocks, ducks, and chickens. They were fun to interact with. Just adding on to other comments about the stairs to get to the caverns. It is 70 steps down and 70 steps up, so anyone with mobility issues just be aware. You can take your time getting up and down though. Once you make it inside the caverns, there are low ceilings which require ducking and two sets of stairs that are about 15 stairs each. We enjoyed the tour and the outdoor activities. We would take it another time if we were with someone who had not been before. read more

What a wonderful experience! Our tour guide Ed was so knowledgeable, and full of personality. While you are waiting for you tour to start, there are plenty of things to keep you occupied such as a petting zoo, gemstone mining, and the gift shop. Although the caverns were fairly small, the tour was about an hour long. My favorite part was "The Wall of Imagination". Our tour guide also told us the story of the Pennsylvania Hermit, which the gift shop sells copies of his diary. Of course I just HAD to purchase because I was so fascinated with it. The cave tour could have been done in less than 20 minutes. The tour guide used stories and imagination to point out what some of the cave formations could resemble. She started the tour with showing us the graffiti people had written onto the cave. Eh I rather not have to listen to that stuff. But then if we just stuck to interesting facts maybe they couldn't justify the price of the ticket. Inside the caves there were several rooms where we stopped to look at. The patterns and formations were cool. We didn't need a jacket even though the website warned that it was 50 something all year round. It didn't feel like a 50 degree day from nyc. A short sleeve shirt and shorts were fine for adults. A light jacket or long sleeve is good for kids and toddlers. It wasn't bad for our small children to walk through. Wow what an experience! Echo Dell Indian Caverns lived up and exceeded my every expectation! This was not my first time in caves... during my last cruise I went to The Bermuda Crystal Caves, which I absolutely loved. But something the Bermuda caves lacked was multiple rooms & being able to walk on the actual ground of the cave. Echo Dell was absolutely amazing in the fact that there were so many different rooms that carried different personalities & natural architecture. Another difference between the Bermuda Caves & the Echo Dell Cavern was the amount of time spent inside & the amount of history I learned. While my visit to the crystal caves in Bermuda lasted only around 20 min, the Echo Dell Caverns ran almost an hour long which I enjoyed. I loved learning extensively about the history of the cavern and the cool stories inside. I definitely think the cost was worth it. There are opportunities to snag coupons which I suggest you do. There is plenty of parking, a petting zoo & even a gift shop As for our tour guide Daniel... wow wow wow! He made my experience reach maximum heights! He was incredibly knowledgeable not only about the caves but also about the entire area. I felt like I had such an incredible time because of his enthusiasm and willingness to teach us about the caves. I recommend Daniel for your tour inside the caves! I went in the middle of December on a weekday. I think going during the off-season was to my advantage, there were no crowds and my tour felt personalized. Overall I had a fabulous time! Daniel was a wonderful guide. If you have been to the Bermuda Crystal Caves and loved it, I definitely suggest visiting the Echo Dell Caverns. And if you haven't been to any caves in general, come and you will end up breathless from the sheer beauty inside! The caves are great for all ages, but if you are out of shape...beware there are a lot of steps. ***MY RECOMMENDATION IS TO WEAR SNEAKERS! It's so amazing to see what the world has to offer. This was a 45 minute tour and our tour guide was a 14 year old boy named Carter. He did a great job and was really enthusiastic giving his tour. I liked the fact that they had a kid doing the tour and he seemed To enjoy what he was doing. You don't see that too often anymore. He was really upbeat. We Bought our tickets which were $20 each and you could purchase bags of sand for about $10 each and they had gemstones in them that you could put in a sand softer box at the end of your tour where water was running along a conveyer type station. As the water washed away your sand you found different rough cut gems and were also given an identification card with the different gems on it that you may find in your bag. The cavern was really beautiful and the tour guide had different stories to keep your attention to what was going on in the cavern. My favorite part was when we walked across a wooden bridge that had a small water pool in it. This cave also had a story about a man who lived in the cave in the 1800's for over 20 years and he had kept a journal about the cave. He was known as the Pennsylvania Hermit. My parents took me here when I was a kid. It definitely brought back memories. I truly enjoyed my visit here. read more

Our family of 5 enjoyed a wonderful morning here! We paid for our tickets ahead of time online to guarantee our early time slot and also purchased the gem mining tickets for our kids also online. The tour was a little over an hour long and our tour guide was very informative and kept the children engaged as well. The cave system is very beautiful and it's truly a site to behold as these formations are millions of years in the making! You will be treading through some puddles so make sure to wear adequate footwear and don't forget a light sweater as the temperature stays a lovely 52 degrees year round. Our kids (ages 8-15) really enjoyed the gem mining/panning activity and got to take home some really petty gems that they really "ooh'ed and ahh'ed" over. Amazing caverns!! If you're in the Hershey, Pennsylvania area, this is a MUST see! It is so gorgeous and amazing inside! A natural wonder! They take you on a tour through different rooms and tell you a little bit of history about it. They even had a fairytale that was really awesome! At one point they take you inside a dead end room and turn all the lights off!! II WAS PITCH DARK!!! I gotta say I was a little spooked because you can't even see the hand in front of you! You do have to go down about 72 steps to get to the entrance 110 ft. underground which was a piece of cake going down put challenging on the way back up! lol They also have gorgeous landscapes to see, a playground for kids and a petting zoo! read more

For the cost of the cave tour, I would've preferred smaller groups. I couldn't see the entire route because too many of us were on the tour. How could this not be 5 stars, what a treasure! Thank you to the awesome Kristina G. for the recommendation. Went with a party of 5 from 10-66 years old and we all enjoyed every moment. The grounds have a small petting zoo, restaurant, miniature golf, gem mill mining, playground, gift shop and the star of the show, the Caverns. The Caverns seriously are a must see. The pictures dont even explain the beauty of this place. Our tour guide's name was Ben, and he was great! Was giving the opportunity to asked all the questions we wanted, take photos of the formations, and selfies :) He gave us the facts of the Caverns and even threw in some old wise tails. The tour takes about 45min to an hour long, so be prepared to walk and climb steps with shoes that you don't mind getting wet. There are a couple small sections of water with a bridge to go over; the Caverns are always dripping water that you can't escape. Please don't be discourage by that, it was actually fun trying to dodge the drops. It is around 52 degrees inside, so it is recommended to have a jacket. As early as the 1800's people actually lived in there, some rooms were used for sleeping, while others were used as a ballroom and wedding room. Thank goodness for electricity, at one point Ben turned off all the lights so we get could experience when lanterns were out and whoa! You literally couldn't even see your hand in front of your face. We lucked out as there was no one but our family for the 3:30 tour! Brad was our guide, and he really took the time to walk us through all the important parts of the cavern and was extremely patient with the questions that my 12-year-old pestered him with. The cave is beautiful, you can definitely feel the age and the mysticism in it. Wear comfortable shoes, preferable, water-proof ones, or at least, ones with a high sole and waterproof or at least, water-repellent jackets and a cap if you don't want to feel any water dripping on you from above. We did not have time to do gem mining, it looked like fun for younger kids. There are also animals-chicken, peacocks, goats, and a small playground. read more

We drove up to see this Cavern because it was highly rated online. We came on a cloudy and gloomy day. The place was located all the way back from where you enter and they have free parking. We came towards closing time (around 4pm) and purchased our ticket inside the shop. It was a bit pricey $18 adult and $10 child for the tour but the property is well kept and clean. They assign you a group number and they will let you know that they will call your number once they are ready to start. NOTE: If you print out their coupon from their website or take a screen shot of the coupon with your phone - they will give you a discount of a $1 off per adult ticket and $0.50 off a child ticket. On the property, they have a petting farm, playground and a mill to pan gems for children to entertain themselves while they wait to be called ( I guess they must have a long wait time when they start earlier in the day). Our group number was called your over a loudspeaker and you meet towards the back of the gift shop. Then, our guide, Kylie (sp?), briefed us the rules before descending to the Caverns. She was very funny and informative. NOTE: This Cavern is not handicap friendly. Be prepared to walk down 71 steps to the entrance of the Cavern. Going down was easier than coming up...I guess that's why they have benches between elevations. Once you are at the bottom of the stairs, they collect your ticket and they are ready to enter the Cavern. You enter the main room - keep in mind, you may want a sweatshirt or something because it's a cool 52 degrees Year round (great for HOT SUMMER DAYS). Inside, you'll get some FANTASTIC science/history/fairy tale stories and even a legend! You walk thru 5 main sections of the Cavern - and be careful of your head. There's even water inside there...it's absolutely beautiful and astonishing! NOTE: Don't wear flip-flops! We had a blast. It was myself and my 19 year old daughter. We loved the whole experience. Our guide was great and I feel bad I can't remember his name because he deserves kudos. He was engaging, patient and knowledgeable. We would 100% go back again. Its a good walk and yes, there are a lot of stairs. But It was worth the price of admission. The only thing is you have to be patient with your tourmates. I get so frustrated with people who don't follow simple words. When they say don't touch anything, DON'T. Anyway, I digress. The inside of the caverns are absolutely stunning! I love a good cavern tour and the inside of these caverns did not disappoint! Why the two star rating then? Our tour guide was young and extremely immature. I only have an issue with the latter. He had several buddies on the tour and could barely get a word out for half of the tour because he was laughing, smirking, and carrying on with his friends. While we appreciate humor, it was unprofessional and ruined the tour. We don't mind paying money for things like this, but it was maddening that we paid $60 for this! Hoping management sees this! Another stop on the PA road trip! We drove on a very narrow road which brought us right to the parking area. We then proceeded to the gift shop because that was where we had to buy tickets to get in and get assigned to a group number. As we waited for our group number to be called on, we looked inside the shop to see what they were selling. As with almost any souvenir shop, the prices on rocks, clothing, candy, and toys were expensive. The caverns were guided tours. Once our group number was called, we proceeded to one area where were greeted by a tour guide. We then proceeded down a long staircase that brought us right to the entrance of the caverns. This was also where he collected our tickets. Once he collected everyone's' tickets, the tour began. Once we went inside and down deep into the caverns, we felt really cool. The tour guide explained that the temperature in the caves is 54 degrees. Anyone who didn't enjoy the hot weather that day would have enjoyed the coolness in here. The tour guide then took us to various parts of the caverns, where we saw various rock formations and tunnels. During our experience, he explained the different types of rocks and tunnels that formed, and how they happened. We even saw some underwater lakes as well, which was really nice to look at. His explanation on how those lakes were formed was quite interesting. We also saw an area where one settler lived in a cave alone by setting up a campfire, and sleeping in a elevated rock bunk to avoid the possibility of being attacked by wild animals. That was really interesting. There was one moment when the tour guide turned off all of the lights so we could see how it felt to be in the caves without any light. Yeah, pitch black. He also told us that if the cold water drops land on your head, you could get some good luck. Well, a water drop landed right in my eye as I was taking a picture of a rock formation. Does that mean I get good luck too? :P Throughout the caves, water drops fell from the top. We also had to avoid some puddles on the walkways too. Lastly, we had to lower our heads to walk under some parts of the tunnel to see what was on the other side. It was all worth it. When the tour was finished, everyone had to climb up the long staircase. Sure it may be tiring, but at least you'll be burning a lot of calories while climbing up those stairs! :D The caverns overall weren't that big, and the admission price for what they were asking for was a little high. Even though we had an online coupon from their website, the price was still a little high. Also, the restrooms were located in a separate building from the gift shop. They weren't very clean, and the fact that they didn't have any soap in there wasn't very sanitary. I take one star away for the negativity mentioned. Overall, I'm a fan of the caverns. We got to see various underground rock formations and lakes. We also got to learn a little bit about the caverns themselves. The tour guide acted very professional throughout our experience. I will recommend this cavern to anyone in the area who's interested in exploring caverns for the first time. Cheers! Tips: You will get plenty of opportunities to snap photos of the rock formations. Indian Echo Caverns is a fun attraction in Hummlestown PA, and not far from Hershey Pa. It is a multi room cavern many, many feet below the surface, which offers guided half-hour educational tours to children, families & individuals. In my opinion the tour is more interesting for younger children than teens & adults. It can get chilly, so bring a jacket! Being a FL girl I had never been in a cavern before. I was kind of turned off by the other reviews but decided to check it out anyway; and I am glad I did! Admission is $13, but you can score $1 off coupon from their website. We went on a day when there were two busloads of children there and we only had to wait ten minutes for our tour to begin. During this time you can pet their goats (I formed a bond with one who loved having his back massaged) or check out their chickens. There is also a small playground. They have a gift shop, clean restrooms, and an area where you can buy bags of sand to prospect for gems and fossils (starts at $7 for a bag). There is also a mini golf course at the entrance of the park with a small restaurant. You go down 71 steps along a creek to the mouth of the caverns. The guide gives you some background on the area and you go into the caverns. The tour lasts around 45 minutes. The caverns stay around 55 degrees so you might want to bring a light jacket or sweatshirt. Our guide was knowledgeable and funny...and I think this could make or break this experience for you. The tour was informative but also had some stories thrown in for children to enjoy. They allow you to take photos inside but you cannot touch the rocks as this does permanent damage to them. They have sufficient lighting throughout, however, if you have a small child who is terrified of the dark be forewarned that there is a moment where they completely turn off all the lights to illustrate what the first explorers would have encountered. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would recommend it, however, I do think it is a bit pricey so I deducted a star. read more

Cool place! Literally and figuratively! At a constant 52 degrees, the cavern is cool and refreshing. What else was refreshing was our awesome tour guide. I was a little nervous when our guide was a young college kid, but I should have been elated! His sense of humor and knowledge of the caves were terrific. He had a real passion for showing people around and was exceptionally good with our five year old. It was her first time in a cave and she was fascinated. Along with her fascination came a million questions. Our guide handled it like a pro. He answered her questions on her level and made her feel very smart for asking such good questions. The caves themselves are amazing and beautiful. They have a long history, which we enjoyed learning about. I've been in several other caves around the country and always enjoy them. This was no exception. Our favorites were the formations that the guides have given names and the "fairy tale" about a mummy and a giant who lived in the cave. Along with the fairy tale were two real stories that were really interesting. I won't spoil them for you here! The site also has panning for gemstones which was a BIG highlight for our two daughters. They were thrilled and amazed to find "diamonds"! There is a small petting zoo and a nice play ground. There are places to have picnics too. The gift shop is extensive. This was absolutely the perfect adventure to take after getting "theme parked out" at Hershey Park. The opportunity to learn some Pennsylvania history, gain geological knowledge and a little urban legend...then you should stop by Indian Echo Cavern. Conveniently located in Hummelstown, tucked back in the woods behind a mini-golf course and "diner" you find a wonder of geological making, staffed by a team that comes to work because of their passion. If you are lucky enough to get Kevin as your guide, you are in for a treat. He "plays" the role of your stereotypical camp counselor, but he's far from it. He is a student of the sciences. Driven by a passion of all things geology, mixed in with folklore, history and whimsy. If you don't get Kevin, I'd reschedule for his next tour...he is that good. The cavern itself isn't as commercialized as many of the others I've visited, and that was just fine. This is like finding a diamond in the rough...go and enjoy! read more

Some nice formations to see and it's not hard to get around in the caves because they used gravel to level the cave floor and added stairs to steep sections. I've been here quite a few times and have always enjoyed my experiences. The gift shop is nice and there are plenty of trinkets and toys for the kids. You wait there until your group is ready to tour, and the wait is never very long. There's also a playground and petting zoo outside which are best taken advantage of when the weather is nice. The cave itself is breathtaking. The only caution is to take care going down the stairs and to avoid touching the walls of the cave (something that not everyone abides by, unfortunately. And the single tour guide can't really enforce this rule if they don't see it happening). Overall the guides are very well informed and the tours allow for photos to be taken at certain points.
