Decided to get around to hunting for a local CFP and starting searching for local ones online. I…read morecontacted this guy via email. If you are a dual income household under the age of 60 or a woman, don't waste your time with this guy and just move on. What could have been a two sentence reply stating that he couldn't work with people like us which would have been fine ended up being a 10 minute phone call that I would have rather not had at all. Attaching screenshots from his website indicating the reasons why we thought reaching out to him was a good idea, but also adding some highlights here: "Get an assessment of your savings and prioritize the key things you need to do financially for a one-time flat fee." "Retirement Income - Where will my income come from when I retire? How can I have more to spend? 401(k) Plan Advice - How much should be saving for my ideal retirement? Am I ahead, on track, or behind? Switch from Savings to Income - How do I turn my savings into monthly income and make it last?" "Be prepared for economic events like Social Security reduction, declining markets, large medical expenses and more. Stress test your plan to address the things you feel could impact your future." All of these things are sensible reasons to work with a CFP, right? Let's read on: I had reached out to him to start inquiring about comprehensive financial management for our household, a dual income family with us being in our thirties. He called me specifically to tell me that most of his clients are in their 60s and that "where I come in" is when people actually retire and need help managing their retirement incomes. Okay, fine. I specified that we'd be looking for a review of our current situation to ensure that we were on the right track for all financial matters: retirement, emergency planning, future family planning etc. I stated that we're using a roboadvisor for IRA management as well as have two 401ks that we're maxing out. Upon hearing this, he stated that we were "probably fine" with what we were doing with the roboadvisor and then paused and stated in a surprised manner, "Oh, TWO 401s." I confirmed this and stated, "Yeah, from each of our respective employers." Yeah. Two 401ks. Because we both work. We're not a single income household. And we both make enough to justify contributing to both 401ks at full or near max capacity. At this stage, I had been trying to end the call but couldn't get a word in as he kept talking. He then proceeding to reiterate his points one more time, and advised me, rather dismissively, to just reach out to Fidelity for help in figuring out the situation with my 401k. Um, sure. If that was the only thing I had to think about, I wouldn't be thinking much about trying to use a CFP, would I? I thanked him for his time and moved on to the next person on my list. Ladies & people under 60+ who aren't still living in the 1950s: don't bother wasting your time. Give your payment for services to another CFP who won't make gross assumptions on the phone.
