I'm going to do this again and again. This is my happy place…read more I was late. Trying to rush out of work early on a Friday never works. Then there was the traffic on the 101. I was going to miss the meet & greet window and show up in the middle of the first class. Late for class on the first day of school! What a nightmare. The sun was setting as the 33 started twisting and climbing into the hills of beautiful Ojai, and my worries melted away. I arrived at Calliote Canyon and was immediately awed by the property. It's gorgeous--definitive California. Jill greeted me at the door with such warmth, and ushered me to the screen porch where Chef Carol was in the middle of her first lecture of the weekend--herbs. Chef gracefully incorporated me into the lecture with brief introductions and catch-up. Jill magically appeared with a beautiful small plate of nosh and a glass of wine, along with the recipe packet and a pencil for note taking. What traffic? I was at work earlier today? Instantly all the cares and concerns of the real world evaporated from my mind. I needed that more than anything. I felt utterly at ease. And I was learning! I learned so much over the course of that weekend. I found myself taking notes right away, because basically every statement coming out of Chef was kitchen gold. I generally pride myself on 'being a good cook' but man, nothing humbles your kitchen pride like learning from a chef. Chef's experience in kitchens and classrooms makes her the perfect educator in this setting. She lectures with a lovely conversational style, making eye contact and ensuring everyone is together, understanding. During practical work in the kitchen, Chef deftly moves throughout the room, giving tips and correcting techniques. All the while Jill is making sure your every need is met, you have all the tools you need before you realize you even need them, and keeping the fantastic tunes at just the right volume. Jill quite obviously put a great deal of care and attention into every detail of the weekend; she is a great host. There were 4 courses total (including a full real course where we learned stuff and made stuff on Sunday! None of this, just wrap up and say goodbyes by noon--Sunday was a full day). Each course was valuable lecture followed by hands-on kitchen work. We covered an exhaustive amount of information and technique without a trace of exhaustion. We cooked delicious food! We ate delicious food! The settings for each meal were picturesque, the ambiance was ideal. A dozen like-minded people sharing a mutual sense of accomplishment, dining under the stars and amongst the candlelight, getting to know one another over a fabulous meal. There is nothing better! Time slowed down. Wonderful new friendships blossomed. Calm, clarity of mind, relaxation, joie de vivre, happiness; these are my memories of this retreat. I'll do this again and again.

I Really can't say enough positive things about each weekend. I left there feeling energized, peaceful, contended and with skills I wanted and needed to learn! Mediterranean and French were equally as enjoyable and all I can say is "I want more please" Chef Carol and Chef Gillian make the experience so easy and stress free. I felt right at home. Love you guys!! See you again next year!!

I've now been to both locations, and while I love the original one, this one really stands out -- it's fresh, inviting, and perfect for a hands-on tasting. The demos were fun to watch, the instructors were super approachable and knowledgeable, and I loved getting to chat with people while tasting so many different dishes. After eight tastings and three desserts, trust me... you won't leave hungry. I'd totally come back, especially since the menu keeps changing.

Chef Marc was an absolute delight. The vibe was warm, welcoming, and full of positive energy. The class framework was thoughtful, engaging, and incredibly well-executed. What truly sets this class apart is the attention to detail. Every aspect of the experience was immaculate, from the clear directions to the venue (complete with a contact number), to the interior setup, comfortable room temperature, and beautifully presented stations. The kitchen tools were high quality, ingredients were neatly laid out with laminated table cards, and even the table settings were on point. And as someone who comes from both an operations and creative background, I have to say: Chef Marc's recipe template is hands-down the best I've seen from any chef-led class. Every detail felt intentional and appreciated, no stone left unturned. Bravo, Chef Marc! This class deserves a standing ovation.

Overall, as a one-time experience, it was fun and exciting for me. That said, after reading the reviews below, I have to agree w/many of them. Cozy Meals did mentioned that the class would be four people per group, but in reality, we were packed elbow-to-elbow around the cooking table and barely got to do much hands-on cooking. Still, I had a great time. The setup was beautiful, and the staff were friendly and helpful (Chefs runners). Our puff pastry dough didn't want to cooperate, it had been left out too long and became too warm, so we struggled rolling it big enough to wrap the beef properly. Even so, the final dish was still delicious. Unfortunately, we did leave hungry still. Extra star for the easy parking and its location. The first two hours are free, w/ additional hours at $2. Sur La Table is located inside a mall, with plenty of options to grab a snack or drink after class and there's even a Costco within walking distance! Ps. Please wash the aprons. I'm not sure how many classes were held before our 4 pm session, but ours was noticeably dirty.

We joined the Essentials: Mexican Flavors night and learned how to make so many amazing dishes. We made a Spicy Daisy (a virgin jalapeño margarita), corn and poblano tamales with pasilla sauce, fresh handmade corn tortillas, birria tacos, and even a rich chocolate ancho chili cake for dessert. We were also taught how to prepare tamasa from scratch. Honestly, it was mostly my daughter doing all the cooking while I listened and admired her skills Chef Zach led the class and was so helpful, along with two assistants who were constantly checking on everyone and guiding us through each step. You're grouped in teams of four, ingredients are prepped for you, and they walk you through everything. Just be ready to set aside 2-3 hours -- it's a full experience. The class costs under $100, which is totally worth it because you get to enjoy (and bring home) everything you make. Such a fun, hands-on experience. Highly recommend for a unique date or bonding time. Happy cooking!
