But a new reason was realized this past weekend at the last JJWL Tourney in Stockton--The owners demonstrate their care and connection with their students by ensuring there is always someone with them! See I signed up my boys late to this tourney, sucks because I missed out on a cool rash guard ;) but for this tourney my boys had staggered start times so I got to see more matches while waiting for their appearances. I started to notice something that was not apparent to me from the last few tourneys we attended (in all past events my boys went at same start times but different mats so I was always running back and forth). Some kid competitors do not have coaches sitting in the chairs supporting them! I found this astonishing because those kids are out there competing and there was no support. I also noticed that every Beda BJJ kid competitor had a coach, sitting there while in action and also before and after. This is what truly sets Beda apart in my opinion.

They do such a great job balancing discipline and structure while still keeping classes fun and something the kids look forward to. They don't just promote everyone automatically like some places do. My son is mildly autistic and this is the sport that he thrived at because of the structure and orderliness of it. The teachers are both patient and work with my kids while still firmly insisting on execution and respect. They understand that kids have different learning styles and different levels of motivation and are able to make it work for everyone. The kids really enjoy all the instructors and respond well to instruction and even discipline when it is warranted. I can't speak to cost / value because I have nothing to compare it against but for us it is affordable and all the costs related to uniform, tournaments, and belt ceremonies have good value. I would recommend this place to any child or adult looking to enter the world of martial arts.

Facilities are minimal - just a run down room with some mats in an old industrial complex. What you will find is one of the few black belts awarded in America by Rickson Gracie. Rickson was big on the basics, so we try to focus on traditional, fundamental Brazilian jiu jitsu and self defense, not the sport/tournament style. (Not that's there anything wrong with that, it's just a different approach.) I've been training here 6 years now, and we've got a really solid crew built up. As long as you have a good attitude and are willing to put in the effort, the mats are wide open for you. We're also very informal here, no titles, no bowing, lining up in ranks, etc. Respect, definitely, just not through formalities, and I prefer it that way. Lastly, rates are very affordable, lower than any other BJJ school I've seen, plus discounts for doing automatic transfers, and no contracts or fees.
