This was one of our last meals in Maine after a three month tour throughout the state so we thought we would end it with fine dining and assumably on a high note.... unfortunately it was a fumble. Great ambiance and quiet. If you're staying here or nearby, it's a logical choice, it's the only....not necessarily the best. To be fair, this visit was in the very beginning of October, and from what I could see into the kitchen, perhaps the B team were playing as I only saw "kids" (teens) in the kitchen and not the chef that was advertised. We started with the oysters from Aphrodite Oysters (local) and that set the disappointing tone. We had been buying from Weskeag Oyster Company so the bar was set high and super plump . Not only were these shriveled up and never should've left the kitchen (again, if the resident chef was there he wouldn't have let these leave the kitchen.) but I got a bad one... if you are an oyster aficionado you know what I mean and it tasted rancid on top of it, had to spit it out. Although the server was pleasant and appeared professional, she made zero attempt to atone for the substandard and bad oyster other than a half-hearted sorry. She offered another cocktail but then charge me for it. Cocktails were delicious but disingenuous. They filled the tiny tumbler on an angle with water and froze it so only about 3 ounces of fit and charged $17 for it. We have no problem paying for a quality crafted cocktail that actually has a mouth full in it. I ordered the gnocchi and my husband had the hanger steak and it was served with fries ...????.. really fries served with dinner at a restaurant purporting itself to be fine dining. We've been fortunate enough to dine in many places through the US and abroad that were elevated to Michelin starred so possibly we should've adjusted our expectations as after three months staying through out the entire state, we had yet to be moved by a meal and remain so. Every place has an off day, you just hope it's not when you decide to eat there.

Ed and Joan, the Innkeepers, made us feel very welcome and were very informative. The location is perfect for anyone taking a morning Ferry to Vinalhaven or North Haven. It is also convenient for a walk through Rockland's beautiful downtown shopping area. Most of the rooms have a view of the harbor. We chose a room without that view but found it perfect for our one night stay. The room was spotless, had a comfortable bed, plenty of drawer space and a private bathroom. There is 24 hour coffee and tea station and a welcoming front room full of reading materials, games, and other interesting items. The front porch is another perfect place to relax and view the harbor. Ed is also the chef and served a wonderful breakfast of tomato and broccoli frittata, mixed fruit, fresh baked muffins and scones. Breakfast also included Ed's very tasty cornmeal pancakes, which I topped off with genuine Maine Maple syrup! We will become regulars as we return to Vinalhaven Island each year to visit our family. And have already recommended it to other family members headed to the island!

The breakfast alone is worth the stay. Rooms are minimalist but functional, beds are comfortable and the place is clean. I can only imagine what it takes to upkeep a place like this so hats off to Ed and Joan. My only comment would be the tv's could use an upgrade (it was tiny) ... not that we even turned it on. A Black Friday run for some flat screens would be a major value upgrade. We also loved that they were open to a one night stay (weeknight) , which is exactly what we needed. The few other places we called all had 2 night minimums which was pretty frustrating for a last minute weeknight escape.

Our spirits were buoyed by owners, Shari & Paul Cunningham, whose wonderful property includes a view of the harbor in Round Pond, perennial gardens, old stone walls, and adjacent forests. We were made to feel right at home in the restored historic (1700's era) farmhouse, with its common rooms for reading, visiting, dining, and relaxing downstairs, as well as its five beautifully decorated guest bedrooms upstairs. Shari is an outstanding cook, serving hearty, nutritious, artfully presented breakfasts every morning. She incorporates fresh eggs from her flock of lively hens whose happy clucking can be heard throughout the day. We look forward to our next trip when we can once again savor the scrumptious frittatas, homemade blueberry muffins, blueberry pancakes, and delicious fruit cups at the dining room's table that looks over the sloping backyard fields and the ocean beyond. Shari was willing to accommodate our request for specific dietary needs. At the top of your "Midcoast Maine Must Do" list should be a stay with Shari and Paul at The Chamberlain House.
