Bar at ESM
D'Arcy L.

Ate here again while staying at the hotel and I must say I was quite pleasantly surprised at how good the meal was and the service. For my meal as I was eating alone I decided to eat in the bar at one of the high tables. The bartender quickly acknowledged me and replied "how can I help you my love". You have to love the Newfoundland sayings. Everyone is addressed as "my love" or "my dear". I decided on the Salmon but I had requested that they cook it medium rare (as I always find some chain restaurants overcook salmon)! I ate this with a Caesar salad. The salad was quid good with tiny chunks of bacon and a very generous sizing. The Salmon came with vegetables and linguini with Alfredo sauce in a bowl. It was cooked perfect! Seriously amazing..... just as I had asked for. Many times I have eaten at ESM in Quebec or Ontario and it's a real disappointment. Here was not the case! Service was excellent and I'd definitely come back!

Eastside Mario's in St. John's. Spicy Italian sausage, red onions, mushrooms, banana peppers and arrabiata sauce...

So... My first time here. Visiting from the US. Very nice hostesses offered many menu suggestions. Travel weary, I went to the bar for beer and pizza. And I waited... Waited 10 minutes for a waitperson to even stop by my table... Waited 20 more for my beer and water... Waited 45 more on the pizza... I thought this was going to be easy after a 12-hour travel day... Place was not full... Weather not so harsh as to cause an assault on local pizza places... Especially mid-week... Perhaps I'm just tired... My waitress/ server (also very nice) just informed me that the pizza was " on them" because it was taking so long... Nice. Small consolation when exhausted... On to the pizza review. Ordered a 10" thin crust, spicy Italian sausage, red onions, mushroom, banana peppers with arrabiata sauce. (Yes it does sound good!) Upon delivery it looked beautiful... Full of goodies - slightly slid to the middle, but nice (see pic). The server offered some extra arrabiata sauce " for dipping" on the side. The banana peppers were excellent! Not quite sure how discerning I am right now (I am SO hungry and tired...) The perimeter of the crust was still "thick" but didn't get in the way of the good combo of spicy and fresh ingredients. I appreciate their recognition of "their fault" on the waiting and the "on the house" pizza. On another day I might say the pizza was excellent... Just too tired today. Ill give them another chance...if i am ever here again...

Basic food, okay service, if you're at the hotel it's an option but otherwise don't go out of your way to eat here.

We saw Piatto's on yelp and the positive reviews were so, so true! We were able to make a last…read moreminute reservation and were seated as soon as we arrived. The staff, and especially our server Lennon, were personable and professional. We ordered the burrata, which was amazing, and also one of their wood oven fired pizzas. The servings were generous and delicious. We highly recommend Piatto's to anyone looking for great Italian dining in St John's NL. Thanks Piatto's!

We decided to have a meal between lunch and dinnertime. The…read moreservice was excellent. We started with a salad called Barbabietola Artostita, splitting it for both of us. It was excellent. We also ordered an Antipasta called Arancini. That was different than anything we have had either in the USA or in or several trips to Italy. It was interesting but it lacked seasoning. When we tried to order a pasta dish, we were informed that no pasta dishes may be ordered before 5:00pm. So we ordered a Marinara pizza to which we added zucchini. I have eaten in Naples at several restaurants so I was able to tell that this crust was made in the Naples style; very thin and made in a very hot oven. The Marinara sauce however was not just salty; it was extremely salty almost to the point of not edible. That affected both of our digestion afterwards. For dessert we had a Tiramisu. Instead of being a piece cut out of a large rectangular baking dish for a cake, it came baked in a tiny glass jar. It was OK but it was not really a real tiramisu and the portion was quite small. Since we did not have access to anything off of the dinner menu, we cannot comment on those dishes.

We stopped by EVOO on a whim, just about 30 minutes before closing last night and ended up having a…read moredeliciously satisfying Italian meal. All vegan, and almost all gluten-free too! Our server Jacob was kind and helpful and the best part was, seemed to really enjoy his job. He took extra care to explain all meals to us and to make sure we would enjoy our selection. The menu is 80% vegan and yet it's nothing like a boring quinoa and kale bowl! We had the fried artichokes on almond purée with pickled celery and they reminded us of fish and chips. Also tried the home-baked flat bread - perfect! - the vegan and gluten-free puttanesca pasta and the Brussels sprouts. Highly recommend EVOO to anyone who is looking for a hearty Italian meal, especially (but not only!) if you prefer vegan and gluten-free food.

This humble spot in an odd location downtown St. John's had been on my radar for a couple years…read morenow. I had walked by numerous times and found it odd but respectable that it was always closed during the day and only opened at 5pm. When I went to enjoy a supper with my parents one holiday evening, the interior was decorated nicely and had really kind service. I ordered the Pork Milanese ($28) which was a battered pork loin with creamy gnocchi noodles and mushrooms on the side. The dish was incredibly filling, but it did keep me wanting to continue picking at each noodle after I was already full. The pork had a lemon on this side to give it some extra zest. My dish was good, but my mom ordered the Chicken Parmesan which honestly looked and tasted better than mine. I also attached a picture of it as well. This place didn't have too many entrees to choose from but the chicken was great, and the pork was good. They have many pizza options, but I am not the biggest fan of fancy pizza so I personally would not come here for that selection. From what I ate though, I'd give this place a solid four for a kind atmosphere and filling meal.
