Went here for post shopping supper a few nights ago and had one of the worst dining experiences ever. First of all the restaurant was not that busy, although we were assured by the hostess it was, we stood for 15+ mins to be seated in a seat that was visibly vacant the whole time, then walked away, 5 mins later returned and dropped about 8 menus for the 4 of us non chalant on the table and left without asking about drinks or anything. 30+ mins later another server arrives after I complain to the hostess that we haven't been even asked about drinks. Another server shows up, he doesn't write anything down and takes our order, now to his credit the apps turned up 20 mins later and still no drinks, another complaint and yet another server who finally brings drinks and hr into our visit, mains arrive and my wife's is cold, we requested a manager and one of the prior servers turn up disregard all our concerns and say we won't be charged, so we left, won't be charged! The renos are great! Open concept , very modern which is nice . Menus aren't laminated and cheap anymore , good quality menu, easy to read and some professional time put into it I can tell . Unlimited soup/salad and garlic homeloaf is awesome . Caesar is same old ( nice to add squeezes lemon and ground pepper) , but the soup is delicious when dipped with the garlic homeloaf ( garlic herb tomato ) . Service was spot on , food was delicious . Oh how I so missed dining at East Side Mario's, which is an Italian American restaurant chain based in Canada. Back in 2000, East Side Mario's also had a few locations in the USA including one in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, which was one of my favorite spots for dinner and offered good tasty food and generous portions at reasonable prices. After a hard day at work in Boston, I took the MBTA Commuter Rail out to the Worcester, MA area and settled down for a hearty delicious meal at East Side Mario's a few miles away. Unfortunately, East Side Mario's closed down their US locations and Vinny T's of Boston took over the Shrewsbury, MA location. I love Vinny T's too, but the prices are higher and the Natick, MA location was closer for me. On our visit to Saint John, my buddy and I headed over to East Side Mario's for dinner, which is located on Saint John's "East Side" surrounded by shopping centers, big retail stores, and other restaurants. We arrived here around 8:00PM on a typical weeknight, honked the bicycle horn for service, and we were seated at a booth immediately next to the replica Statue of Liberty. The interior of the restaurant (loud bar & grill atmosphere) had very cool decor & strung lights and it felt like we were dining in Little Italy in NYC, a little taste of home. The menu offers Italian American items such as pasta, pizza, regular dinner entrees, salads, appetizers, sandwiches, kids meals, and desserts. Our waitress promptly came over to explain the specials and took our drink order 2 Diet Cokes ($2.49 each with free refills). We then placed our dinner order, each entree included unlimited soup or salad and fresh garlic homeloaf. I chose the Italian Wedding Soup (with fresh grated cheese), which had a hearty chicken broth with orzo and meatballs, and I had to ask for another bowl, yum!! My buddy had a tasty Caesar Salad, which was pretty fresh. For dinner, I had the Seafood Linguine ($16.99-shrimp, mussels and scallops simmered in a seafood tomato-herb sauce, topped with grated Parmesan cheese), which was pretty good and garlicky. My buddy had the Spaghetti ($9.99) with Sausage (add $3.49) which was tasty, sausage chopped & mixed with the sauce and the pasta was firm, more than al dente. We were both pretty full so we passed on dessert. I used my AAA (CAA) card and got 15% off the check, a limited time promotion, which covered the HST (13%). We walked to the restaurant from our hotel; Hampton Inn and received a coupon for 15% off from the hotel. They also give you a discount when you show your CAA card so that also helped on the bill. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were promptly seated in a booth. The waitress was friendly and helpful. We both decided to order the all you can eat salad/soup, and bread with a pasta. The garden salad was alright but I would have preferred a few more tomatoes and little less dressing. The wedding soup was very good. The tiny meatballs were flavourful and good combination with pasta and spinach. The bread was warm and fresh and I would have liked garlic butter instead of the butter but it was still tasty. The pasta was not the best; I had the spaghettini and my husband had the penne. My pasta was fine but the sauce was a little runny and his was good but did not have any meat in the sauce. The pasta wasn't the highlight of the meal but after eating the salad/soup and bread we weren't too hungry. The meal was less than $20 for both of us which was a great deal! read more

I really wan't very impressed. It seems there are a lot of mediocre chains in the area, and I keep sampling places hoping for something that stands out. I sampled the sausage penne, nachos, caesar salad, and the wings. The sausage penne was fine, almost spicy, and for me, that's a good thing. I could have gone for spicier. The wings were kinda tasty, but they weren't what we expected. We ordered the hot wings, and they came out sweet with a hint of heat. To be honest, they reminded us of General Tso chicken at a Chinese restaurant. And the blue cheese that came with them tasted fresh from the Ken's Steak House bottle--ick! The nachos were a complete disappointment. Mostly a pile of chips that hadn't been fully cooked. The toppings were ok, but the chips were mostly naked and undercooked. The salsa was supposed to be hot, but it was pretty bland. I was pretty sure it came from Pace. Mostly, ESM comes across as bland and average. read more

This Italian Restaurant is comparable to Olive Garden or Carino's in the states. We had some great dishes and appetizers. Calamari was very fresh and cooked perfectly, very tender. The Chicken Carbonara was perfect and so was the shrimp carbonara. One of my guests had a cheese and basil pizza which was also good. Very good for a commercial italian restaurant. Waitress was also very attentive and helpful. She was also very pretty which added to the overall experience. :-) read more

I've experienced better East Side Mario's in the US in the 90s. This one seemed a bit sad, possibly because it was far away from everything. We walked down from our hotel because we had a coupon AND it was a blast from the past. However, our waitress was convinced, and did her best to convince us, that ESM did not ever exist in the US. The food was ok. It was edible, but nothing at all interesting. Service was ok, but I've had better at similar chains. Show your AAA card for another discount! read more

This place was bad, we stopped in for a quick lunch while Christmas shopping and were seated. Our server was decent, not around often but still competent. The food was bad, like bad bad. I ordered the chicken wings, they were the "breaded from a box style" with the über crunchy KFC type coating. The sauce was garden variety hot sauce that offered more of a sweet spice than say a Dave's or a Franks. The wings were small and tough and there were few on the plate despite the price. The wings weren't great but they weren't the real problem. My wife ordered the Fettuccine Alfredo pasta. It is a simple dish. When it arrived we were presented with thin, flavorless white sauce with overcooked pasta almost floating in it. There was NO salt, at all. Not in the sauce, nor in the pasta water. There was no hint of reasoning at all. The Alfredo had no garlic flavor, no parm flavor.... No flavor at all, it wreaked of "frozen from a bag" sauce. My wife ate it, because we were pressed for time and we were starving. She commented on having to eat the bread appetizer leftovers at the end of the meal to get something tasty before we left. The Caesar drink was good. When it was time to go the server dropped the bill and that was the last we saw of her. We kinda stood by the bar looking to pay, looking for a person to take the money. When we ate there, the atmosphere was very inviting and modern-city themed and very relaxing. The food, to which what we ordered was very pleasing and delicious (four meat pizza and salad). The table service was done well as our glasses never actually got 'empty'. And the place is all around clean ( note: never used the washrooms). Thus: a five star rating! Horrible, had the capellini which tasted just like frozen pasta you could cookat home. Had a sangria that I waited 20 minutes for that was disgusting an undrinkable. We waited a very long time for our food when we complained we were told they were busy I told her it doesn't look busy as there is 5 tables tops seated right now, she said the patio was busy (not a single person was on the patio when we left) we paid over $12 for a 5 year olds supper of spagetti and ceaser salad which we had to pay for separately. Horrible waitress couldn't care less if we enjoyed the food or not no tip for her. The dining room is also very dirty looks like the booth walls and dusty nicnaks haven't been washed in forever.We will never be back. $70 for food we could have made better at home for $20 read more

The staff are slow and their deals change all the time. Read the fine print carefully. Also check your slip for the correct price, I've had a couple issues. On the plus side they must have changed their pizza recipe, it has improved. Not an Italian experience. Not a sports bar. read more

EAST SIDE MARIOS SAINT JOHN was recently fully renovated. I like the atmosphere much more. The food is always the same which is a good thing. A good staple if you are looking for a chain restaurant and probably the best bang for your buck because the portion sizes are huge especially if you get the unlimited bread and salad. read more

2 stars is being generous! We were fans of East Side Mario's in Saint John and use to go there often. Then it shut down for awhile and new owners took it over so we were excited that it reopened. The excitement was short lived as we tried it 3 times and were not happy the first 2 times. The third time which was this evening was the worst. The service was terrible, as we waited for a drink for over a half hour after we gave our order. The children's food came first after quite a wait, then we continued to wait another half hour or so and when the waitress came with the food, the order was wrong so my husband had to wait another 20 minutes. THe waitress showed no empathy to us as customers for any of it and when we told her the food wasn't good, she told us it was good and in fact she was herself buying the food we didnt want that was a wrong order because she couldnt wait to eat it after work because it was so good. This was after I told her we were not happy with the food. We ate very little of it. She gave us the bill and overcharged us for beverage which was on sale for the day by$1.99 . She said oh no thats just your tax added in to which I replied no the tax was added at the end of the bill and it would be 1.99 on a $5:00 drink. after 1 hour 40minutes it was frustrating and a whole bad experience. We for the first time in our adult lives did not leave a tip. I just couldn't spend another 20-25% for the service or the food. read more
