When you enter, you're greeted by a huge wooden Chief Wasatch sculpture at the entrance. It's kind of hard to miss and gives the whole place a bit of character before you even step onto the paths. From there, it opens up into this really clean, green space that just feels well cared for. And clean is the big thing here that matters. It feels like the park is well maintained. The grass is lush, the landscaping is especially pretty in the summer months, and there are tons of mature trees that give you shade without making the place feel closed in. It strikes a nice balance between open space and cozy, private areas. The walking paths are another highlight. They're easy, flat, and perfect if you're just trying to clear your head or, like me, take a quick break and stretch your legs. You've also got little views of water here and there that add to the calm vibe without turning it into a full-on destination park. What's kind of impressive is how much is packed into one place. There's an amphitheater, sports fields for pretty much everything, a pool, even an outdoor ice rink when it's in season. The park has playgrounds, picnic areas, and pavilions, too. The park is open year-round and is clearly a local favorite because it's always buy, but the crowds never felt overwhelming when I was there. There's enough space to spread out, which helps. Overall, this park is not trying to be anything flashy, just a really solid, well-kept community park. Easy to walk, nice to look at, and surprisingly relaxing for a quick stop. I've heard lots of people talk about this park, especially in the winter when it's all lit up with Christmas lights, and it wasn't until this year that I finally made it out there. The playground looked fun-although I didn't go try it myself. I figured that the parents of the kids playing might not appreciate some rando adult joining in with everyone. But if you have youngsters, or are one yourself, you'll find merriment and joy here. The trees were all lit up beautifully and the star of the show, of course, was mesmerizing. It might not be a multi-hour tour, but it's worth a visit. And it's free, so there's that!

In terms of wildlife, they had a small pond at the parking area, which had tons of ducks and I'm pretty sure I also saw a pica which was a first for me. It looked like they also had bathrooms as well as a seating area. I was surprised at how clean everything was and maintained the paved trail was. I definitely recommend coming here for a walk or a run as I felt very safe even by myself at 6am For my birders: There's a pretty good number of species out there, including lesser gold, finches, black Chin, hummingbird, Rufous hummingbird, and others (see photos for an August visit)

It's a good place to hop on, and you can go north or south as the trail will take you back under Winchester Street when you park on the north side. But actually, it's more than just a parking lot launching off point. They actually have a small park here, with a rentable pavilion, restrooms, a small playground, tables, BBQs, and as you're close to the Jordan River, you can launch a canoe here, too. There's not a ton of grass, but enough for the kids to run around. However, you should be aware that there's a small diversion of the river to a pond/flow sort of situation in the midst of the park so you won't want to let the kiddos wander too far from where you can keep an eye on them. Once you get too far from Winchester, the trees get a little more sparse, but there's good shade coverage here for those hot summer days. For me, though, it's most enjoyable in the shoulder months when the foliage is turning or in the spring when you just have to get out and take a long walk.

The area was clean and offered plenty of parking spots. The food trucks were a plus, good place to catch some dinner and let the little one run and play. It's sturdy design and three slides are a hit for all the kids. They also improved the slides and landscaped the playland with new wood chips. The grass has seen better days and the playground definitely has an old school feel, but the park has plenty going for it. There are lighted tennis and pickleball courts, a large covered pavilion that's perfect for family gatherings, picnic tables with BBQ grills, and a flat paved loop that's great for walking and jogging. There are also lots of mature trees that provide welcome shade during the summer, too. If you're looking for a peaceful neighborhood park where kids can play, dogs on leashes are welcome, and there's room to relax, Southwood Park may be the place for you!
