There are some older and good professors, but most of the newer professors are all UC rejects who seek a tenured position at this school and care very little about students once they tenured. The chair of the department, Jancovich is a lost cause. Now, I am starting to understand why the department of education is being dismantled. You get people who sits on their butt with 6 figured salaries and not actually helping students. The chair used to be Dr Escobar and he was ok. But now it's Jancovich and he will find ways to push students away. His emails will always say " there's nothing he can do" I mean that should be his life quote of sort. Pretty useless. If you're planning to major in biol, go to UCSD. Even if it means staying at the comm college a bit longer. Or a different school, don't come here it's a complete joke. This is coming from me, a current student who had to deal with it and eventually changed my major to biochemistry. The two more organized departments are the chemistry and computer science departments. The chemistry depart is organized, and the computer science department is very solid. Though not everyone want to major in it because of the amount of math that students have to take. Other than that, nobody cares especially if you're a biology major. I changed my major to biochemistry because of how unsupportive and disorganized the biology department is.

Teachers working here are supported by the parents through wish lists and wonderful teacher appreciation events. There is a very high staff and student turn over for various reasons as this young school settles in. The Special Education Program is stabilizing after neglecting the needs of the kids for over two years. Although this school is not a true Montessori it is being implemented as best they can considering the lack of trained teachers, they are very adaptable to children's individual needs. They have no tolerance for sub-standard teachers and will let them go and attempt to replace them with qualified invested professionals. If you are interested in attending plan to be in it for the long haul, there are going to be ups and downs. My children love the school, it is constantly improving and provides plenty of opportunity to help out.

In those cases, families are treated warmly and respectfully on the surface. However, when a parent begins to raise concerns--even thoughtfully and professionally--the tone can shift quickly. The administration may start to view you not as a partner, but as a problem. Instead of open dialogue, the response often comes in the form of subtle retaliation, increased formality, or distancing behavior. Eventually, the pressure and lack of transparency can make a parent feel isolated and unsure, while the child--unfairly--is framed as the issue. From my experience, what seems to challenge the administration most are parents who: * Are observant * Ask questions * Understand how systems and accountability work * Expect clear communication, not vague policies These qualities appear to disrupt the comfort of those in leadership, and the reaction is often controlled but intentional. There is also a notable level of teachers turnover, which contributes to a sense of ongoing instability. If you're a parent who intends to advocate for your child, ask questions, or expect partnership, I encourage you to carefully consider not only the academic environment--but also the emotional and psychological safety the school provides. The experience can be deeply discouraging for engaged families when collaboration is replaced with control disguised as professionalism.

Sanderling Waldorf School has done a major campus renovation so the school is looking beautiful…read more The Waldorf curriculum and approach are the only school I've found that is truly developmentally appropriate. The teachers are loving, they care deeply about the children, and understand how to meet the children with gentle, loving authority. The curriculum includes art, music, lots of games and movement, woodwork, knitting, 2 foreign languages, and of course all the traditional academic subjects. They learn their times tables by jumping rope, they learn languages through singing and stories, and botany on nature walks. They have been screen and tech free for over 100 years and Waldorf graduates go on to do well in High School, University and beyond. I should know, my daughter had a Waldorf education from Kindergarten through High School and is a successful working adult with a great circle of family and friends. Your child will love going to school and will grown into a resilient, confident, capable, kind and accomplished adult. Sanderling serves children from 15 months through to Grade 8, so call them to take a tour. You won't regret it!

I share how much I appreciate Coastal with friends and even ppl I just met who bring up wanting to homeschool but unsure where or how to start... well Coastal and Classical offer so many choices and leaders that will meet with you and help you decide. They have different options and last year introduced yet another! Our oldest tried it last year and enjoyed it so we've experienced two choices and love both. So if you are trying to decide what's best for your family, I encourage you to reach out to Coastal or a Classical Academy close to you. Another helpful bit of info, they have a zero bullying policy that they actually implement! They talk with the student and parents immediately not allowing it to go on and on. Thankfully our children haven't experienced bullying at Coastal, but overheard a child saying something like another child isnt smart and immediately a teacher called the children to talk with them and the one apologized. In 4 years that is all our children have witnessed. That's how I wish all schools could be but friends have shared so many truly disturbing experiences at other places and little consequences. Several have moved their children to homeschooling full time because of them being bullied. Coastal teachers and volunteers have all been so kind and strive to give kids a welcoming place to learn and have fun while learning. Feel free to message me as well. I'm just a mom who has two kids here since 2022, so I may not know all the answers but I can help!

From our time in the baby room, to basically having kids in every room, and almost every teacher, we have loved our time here. I've been a room parent, mystery reader, volunteered at their annual gala and attended their amazing kids art shows. The school and the teachers go above and beyond in everything they do. If your looking to find a caring, safe, creative and loving environment, this is your school.

We have thought a lot before writing this review which mostly reflects how we felt about…read moreAspirations at the end of our almost 5 years with the school. We ended up leaving because despite having had such a long time with the school, it became obvious to us at the end that we weren't valued as a family and that our little one wasn't truly seen as a whole person. We had one child start in the Bambini (baby) room just before COVID, went back after COVID and continued all the way through until starting Kindergarten. We had another child that spent a couple years here before just leaving this year. On a whole, Aspirations feels like a Instagram dreamspace - the Emilio Reggio style learning emphasizes the environment and it truly shows. As a parent, you know your child is surrounded by beauty. The art show feels special (although you eventually come to realize how much "teacher guidance" the final auction pieces actual reflect). The gala is also exciting and fun (when it happens). The playground is spacious and beautiful. Our years through Aspirations meant our kids have been in almost every room and in reflection there were great teachers and there were so-so ones and almost every year there was at least some unexpected teacher turn-over in the middle of the year. We ended up leaving because the first time we had any issues, we were surprised at the inflexibility of the administration and unwillingness to work with us. We requested that our little stay with friends in transitioning to a new class, shared the difficult family/life events that were affecting her and had the admin team tell us that they were not going allow her to change classes that despite the fact that the requested class was not yet being filled (they wanted to keep spots open for newer families/kids). Additionally, they weren't even willing to come up with a alternative plan (ie she could move to that class if someone transitioned out). The finality of "administrator knows best" was a slap in the face and made us finally look around and realize that this was one of the most expensive schools around, does not provide lunch, and its premium for the "extended care" (4-5pm where all extended care kids get placed with another teacher for that last hour, sometimes a different one daily) was not the standard everywhere.
