I went to Earwax today hoping to exchange a record my husband bought new for my birthday. The first track skipped horribly and after cleaning the record with no improvement, I thought an even exchange might be warranted. When I explained the situation, the clerk immediately began asking questions about my setup. I have an AudiotechnicaLP60, and when I told her this she immediately launched into a speech about how this is not a good turntable and educating me about what a counterweight is (which I already know). She told me that she had bought the same turntable for a friend thinking it was good and it wasn't. (Not relevant to this situation) She played the record at the shop and it played well with no skips so she said they were unable to exchange the record. She again insulted the turntable I own, and I shared that none of my other records skip like this but she insisted that I should upgrade my setup. I understand the policy of 'if it plays here, we won't accept a return or exchange' but insulting my knowledge was a step too far. Although I may not have the most quality turntable on the market, I do posses knowledge about how to take care of my records and how a turntable and audio setup works. I happen to be unemployed after a layoff, so I don't exactly have the money to buy a new turntable or really even a new copy of this record. So honestly, this just made me feel bad. Earwax is in my neighborhood, and I have spent at least $200 here since I started collecting my favorite albums on vinyl. (BTW all of those records play perfectly on my setup!) I always think to patronize local businesses first. Unfortunately, after this interaction I will be avoiding this shop and visiting other shops in the neighborhood or online retailers that offer better customer service. Honest advice, please just stick to your policies when dealing with these situations, Earwax. Insulting and patronizing me really wasn't necessary. read more

I haven't purchased any analogue equipment yet, but the proprietor was very accommodating and knowledgeable. He was willing to spend time with me as a perused his stock of vintage turntable decks and amps. The prices are a bit above market on these items, but the store has overhead, so this is to be expected. Good vibe. read more

I appreciate this store. The selection of new records is excellent. I'm not talking about the sheer number of records, but what records they choose to sell. The person running this store is obviously a music junkie, and knows how to stock it. People need to be realistic about prices. You're not going to get yard sale-type prices on vinyl anymore, unless you're at a yard sale. That said, the prices at Earwax are reasonable. read more

It's Feb 2022 and they have a mask requirement and a 5 person limit. The world is opening up. NY Governor stopped mask requirement. I was in Brooklyn Bowl earlier today and it was full of families with kids and no masks. It was... normal. As someone who literally danced in the streets when Biden won, and who is a "socialist" as well as a scientist, I have 0 tolerance for Earwax's extreme position. I'm taking my money elsewhere. Staff should not be so confident on pressing info if they aren't sure. I was told a used record off the wall was a first press without them actually checking online for me. I always double check with Discogs to make sure before I buy but there is zero internet service in there if you have AT&T so I was relying on what the salesperson told me. I was told wifi is not available for customers. Why not? This place is fine if you're a casual collector, not if you are a serious collector who wants to make sure they know what they are buying (maybe if you're have Verizon it's not an issue). EDIT: seeing the owners response made me realize that I didn't add the fact that two of the records I bought there were not accurately described by the salesperson. I asked if one of the records was a first press, I checked Discogs when I had internet access and it was def not a first press. I was told a different record was limited to 500 but again after checking Discogs myself, it's limited to 5,000. As a serious collector I cannot shop here. read more

This is a really charming store but all the good stuff is decoration. The selection is pretty much all new pressings of records. It's a longtime Williamsburg holdout but I'm not really sure why it exists. There are ten much better record stores within walking distance. Record Grouch, Academy, Captured Tracks, Blue Sun, Human Head, Rebel Rouser, etc. I hate shutting on a record store but it's kinda galling to see a bad one in an area that has such a high condensation of great ones. I want this store to be good but instead it feels like a bad dream about record shopping I hope they can turn it around and find a way to make it special or valuable in some way. read more

Great record store! My music loving friend pointed out that their stuff is mostly new, and he is correct, but damn do they have an eclectic selection that in sum is really fantastic. If you are wanting dusty old vinyl that nobody has pulled from the sleeve in years this is not your place. But it is still worth browsing. Why you ask? Because these people who run this place know what they are talking about. Their staff picks are outstanding and you are guaranteed to find something new that you have never heard that will be amazing. Like I did. In fact, just about everything in this store is hand-selected which makes up for the fact that it isn't a very big store. This is a quality over quantity sort of a place. They also sell sound equipment if you are looking for the right kind of machine to drop that beat or just listen to music on. read more

Piss poor shop no evidence of grading of overpriced used records. In fact was asked to not "touch the grooves" on the records I had an interest in. Inspecting the records they were found to have significant scratches across the tracks more than likely affecting play quality. As a former multi shop owner and one of the largest collectors in the east coast I was insulted by the obvious inexperienced staff member who felt it necessary to ask me to not touch the grooves. If the clerk would of been paying attention she would of noticed I handle vinyl as any audiophile would. Needless to say I ended my visit.. did not purchase anything. The shop is small with over priced represses and a small selection of used, I believe after the staff learn how to treat customers .. they should probably have a lesson in the alphabet as the organization in this shop would not allow you to believe that the person with the responsibility of organizing the stock is familiar with the English alphabet. I would guess the shop does not have more than 1500 records in stock and the pricing scheme does not reflect current market price in any form. Like Comment Share read more

In a store this small, I expect some sort of acknowledgment that I walked in, but whatever. Aside from that, the selection is pretty small and almost everything I'm interested in was priced more than Rough Trade NYC down the road or Amazon. The only reason I could think of to visit here is in the hope's that they have SOMETHING you're looking for that's a dollar or two less than somewhere else. They did have all 3 Vampire Weekend albums for $15.99, which is a good price, so I suppose there are some deals to be found. If I was searching for something specific, I'd likely come back to price check, but I won't be back to just browse. read more

Not much selection of either records or equipment. What really made me walk out was the poster on the wall. I have nothing against nudity, but a wall sized poster of a man in a suit with twenty naked women at his feet is, frankly, insulting to all but the most clueless basement dwellers. To make it worse, I had my daughter with me. Stuff like this is a purposeful attempt at exclusion. It worked. I won't be back. read more

How could the oldest record store in Brooklyn but only few reviews? I found the place by chance read a rather obscure street board sign. But what a pleasant surprise, the store has very very nice selection of new items (mostly recent and new releases or reissues) but extremely well curated. There are some interesting progressive rock items among the used vinyls; limited compare to other similar stores but nice selection as well. Definitely worth visiting read more

Earwax is the best in the 'hood - and now that they've moved to the super spiffy new store there's even more room for all that great vinyl & handpicked hi-fi gear (turntables, receivers etc) Earwax's old location (Bedford ave/n. 5th) was there for 13+ years so these guys have earned their title as the king of Williamsburg record stores. Its unfortunate to give this place a bad review because I've bought a ton of great records here in the past but I had a really terrible experience there today. The woman working had a full blown temper tantrum the entire time I was browsing today. First, she starts sighing loudly and yelling "Fuck!Fuck!", going into the back, slamming the back door repeatedly, scoffing, dropping shit and snapping it up in this absolutely insane wat and being incredibly rude to the customers in the store. Every time a person didn't flip the stack back after perusing it, she stomped over and slammed the stack of records back. She yelled at someone for disorganizing a single record that did not even seem to be in any real order. I work at a bookshop and people constantly screw up the order and messy up the shelves but you're the one getting paid to work so just fix it and shut up. The atmosphere was just incredibly tense in the store. There are a multitude of great, calm and quiet record shops in north Brooklyn, there's no reason to have to deal with an employees serious personal issues when you're giving them your repeated business. read more

Came into the shop on Sunday just to browse; some of the records seemed overpriced, but the ones I ended up buying were of fair value. Selection is decent for a store of it's size. However, the middle-aged gentleman working the register was very unfriendly. He didn't greet us when we walked in, didn't say a word to us for the 15 minutes we were in the store browsing, and completely ignored my 'hello' and 'thank you' upon paying for my records. There are a hundred better record shops in NYC; don't waste your time at this one. I went 3 blocks away to another one and was treated much better by the woman working there. read more

Only giving this place 2 stars because of the good selection. I bought a used vinyl for $13 and it didn't even play through 20 seconds of any song without skipping. I buy used all the time, and this was a waste. I went to the store to ask if I could switch it out or get a refund, and the man working was very rude and didn't care that I got a piece of crap vinyl for $13. Like I said, I've bought used before and know that they come with scratches/dust, but this was terrible. Never going back again because of the rude customer service. read more

New York record shops often tend to cater to assorted niche scenes, but Earwax manages to have a very eclectic selection of new vinyl for such a small shop. You're also more likely to find lesser known and obscure stuff than at a shop like Rough Trade. Staff is super friendly and accommodating. I don't always find what I was specifically looking for, but I do always find something I've been meaning to pick up. They also have a nice collection of vintage audio gear at really reasonable prices. read more

Earwax is a gem of a record store in the heart of Willamsburg. I LOVE this store and I shop there every time I'm in New York.
