I'm used to Standard in SF and Oakland, but the NY store is just as good with their selection. They have a small store (compared to the bay area locations) but it seems pretty standard for a lot of the record stores I've seen in NY. They basically have two walls lined with records. One side is used and the other new. With both, the selection of records is really strong. Rock definitely dominates, but for other genre's the titles available are always interesting. On the used side, there are some pricey, rare titles (but reasonable.) Also, I appreciate that the aesthetic is really clean and minimal, even though I know this isn't to the taste of some collectors. read more

This brick and mortar outpost of the Superior Viaduct label carried a relatively modest inventory but it really packs a punch. My husband and I visited Stranded Records on a recent trip to NYC. Yes, we're the "shop for records when we travel" people - we've all been there, don't judge! While the shop looked small, it packed a HUGE punch in selection. We picked out quite the haul and they didn't even hesitate to offer to ship them to our house for us so we wouldn't have to pack them for the flight home. They took great care in packaging them up and the records were on our door step in Oregon 4 days later. I can't wait to give this shop another look next time we're in Manhattan. read more

What a find! My teenager has been hounding me to come here, they have kookie hours on the weekend so make sure you don't get here too early on Saturday. We stop in its not a huge store but its packed with some pretty cool jazz albums. My son is freaking out, Dad look, Curtis Mayfield! (I brought him up to listen to Jazz and 70's music) Score! The people behind the counter are super helpful. When you pick up and album, the smells of the album jacket, the big album picture and the sound, why did this medium go away again?? Good Records gets 2/5 on price and 3/5 on selection. One positive thing I will say is that it's a very clean used vinyl shop. I went into Good Records about 9 months ago and they had about fifteen $1-$3 bins which contained records in Poor-Good condition. I went in this week and saw all the beat up records increased from $1-$3 to $5. It just speaks to the absurdity of buying vinyl in NYC. There's no such thing as "treasure hunting" in NYC. You have a record that's absolutely trashed, won't even play clean on your player, and you're asking $5? 99% of the vinyl isn't even worth $5 in Mint condition. These are mostly unloved and uncollected artists. $3 for $1 records was a stretch, but $5 is absurd. The good vinyl is priced higher than you can find online or shops outside of NYC, but not as absurd as some of the other shops in NYC that list a $15 album for $35. I know rent is high in NYC but shops get silly with themselves and don't price vinyl to sell. Most shops buy vinyl for 10% of what they sell it for. It's better to sell 10 albums at a average/above average price than 1 album or no albums at a super premium price. Selection is hit or miss. Really depends on what you're into. Saw a fair amount of rock, rap, some reggae. Not as extensive as some larger shops, but they did have an amount worth browsing. read more

Still a gem in the East Village, after the transition from Good Records. Packed with rare, clean vinyl, and good prices to be found. Otherwise, the records may seem pricey, but no more so than you would find for similar rare LPs elsewhere. And, a BLESSING is that they don't stick their sticky pricing stickers to the paper/cardboard covers. So many stores do this--perhaps for perpetual advertising, or the belief that record collectors need this notation of nostalgia or whatever for their internal mental history of record collecting. Rather, the LPs are individually sealed with the circle Stranded logo price sticker attached to the plastic--and if you keep the plastic on, you can preserve the memory of that special day, even after years of tequila chasing Pabst has dimmed the pristine clarity of that magical, music purchasing moment. And they often are magical, 'natch. read more

My favorite place to tuck into downtown. I collect records and always find something (okay, a few things) I have to pick up. They constantly have new arrivals that are a treasure trove to me. The guys here are nice and knowledgeable. They are never intimidating like some shops can be. They're willing to keep an eye out for albums and have good taste in recommendations. New store the Stranded at 5th street location 2019. No more cheap records scattered on the floors or in the middle of the store, one side of the store is the used records starting at $15 and up. The other side is all new reissues. I personally liked the old store Good Records. No more play stations, that's a major bummer for me. The selection for the used records looks good but the prices are not as flexible as the old store. The used records has a curated feel about it which is good and bad. read more

Well curated selection of used, collectible jazz, blues, soul, funk, gospel, etc ... the off the beaten path stuff, but selections are limited, not very deep. Prices can be high but they are negotiable, esp if you pay cash. You also get to listen before you buy. Staff can seem off-putting. Just ask, they are almost always helpful. read more

Though I don't buy vinyl, and of what I do buy is not typically soul or blues, I did find this store to be very well designed and approachable. Along the walls are the vinyl that people come in for, but in between is this thing called walking space. Plenty of it. Most record stores try to fit in as much product as possible, but Good Records seems to pride itself on its limited quantity. There was a very limited number of choice, non-mainstream cds in the place, so make sure you or someone you're with is there for the vinyl. A nice feature of the store was that there were quite a few turntables to listen to records before one bought them. Finally, the staff was very friendly and informative, as they helped identify a song that they had played while I shopped. A great place to go for vinyl and some good tunes. read more

I can admit when I'm wrong, and this time, I definitely missed the mark on this record store. The person who helped me out (Jonathan, I believe) is by far the most helpful person I've ever encountered at a record store. I came back last month to delve into some 60s progressive rock. He turned me to The Soft Machine and Rotary Connection. I added in a couple of $1 records, and helped me out with a bulk price. These records have been on my rotation since. If I had more money, I would have bought some of the rare hip-hop records they have in stock as well. What else can I say, but I apologize for the earlier bad review, and I will recommend this place 'til the cows come home. read more

This place is like one of those really clear lakes that looks about a foot deep but is actually forty feet deep. Three clean steps below street level at a storefront that looked like a whitewashed brunch place rather than a haven of used vinyls led into Good Records. So bedazzled was I at the sight of a clean, polished, dark wood floor that I thought, 'Hmm, it's smaller than I thought." Of course I was proven wrong as the sun set outside the bright windows and I got several leg cramps from squatting at the $1 shelves that lined the rectangular storeroom. Best of all, the store was quiet, quiet, quiet (aside from the music) and on a section of the street that really escaped the whole modern scene. The lack of a crowd allowed me to place my belongings on a nice wooden bench so that I could really be free to browse. Only later did one other dude show up, and he really knew his stuff; he was shouting over the music at the dude in the store about what parts of a hip-hop song could be copyrighted. Speaking of a hip-hop section, this store definitely had one. What I learned, however, is that a lot of them probably come from deejays, and are thus single (DUUUUUH). I admit that the sale cubbies were just too rich (or too thin) for my blood, and I surfaced with Nas's "Hate Me Now" single, Spandeau Ballet, and Culture Club, only to pass up all three. My worst temptation here was a Horslips album in an octoganal case featuring intense paper cutwork. I wasn't hip enough to have heard the Horslips yet, but was able to have a listen at one of the stations. Later, I found that of the two stations, the one on the left (when facing the back of the store), was better. The one on the right kind of made Madonna sound warpy like Nico, but an octave higher...though this wasn't an entirely unpleasant effect. The guy working there admitted that the belt on that turntable was probably very old. He was very laid back in general, and accommodated all my questions, which I called out from all parts of the store since it was just him and me in there for 90% of the time. While I huffed and puffed through endless options, he fiddled with the music. He had a bit of music A.D.D. in fact, but I was able to forgive him this and the paradoxical fact that he was playing mp3s off a humungous Mac because it all indirectly led to the fact that I got to hear "Computer Love" playing as I shopped. The $3 each (or 2 for $5) sales section is where I mined my nugs of gold. Michael Jackson's Off the Wall AND Thriller in perfectly playable condition, along with Like a Virgin by Madonna and Changes by David Bowie. Having just seen the latter title at another store for eight bucks, I wondered what was the story on all of the things I'd found. "I don't know," the guy said, " usually they sell really fast, but at this point, it was just easy for me to get rid of them for really cheap rather than wait around." "That's ten dollars," he said, until he saw my bank card. This is how Country Mouse Jia learned that you can get a break on sales tax if you use a card. Oh well, it was still just a little over two bucks per for four albums I would have bought at some point anyway. All in all, a successful trip; nothing to keep me from revisiting. read more

Every time I hear the store name I have to laugh. Whats GOOD about this record store? From the few times I have visited this place they're blasting music with tons of F*** words and N*** words in them. No I'm not a kid thats afraid of some cussing in music, but that definitely turns my mood off to hang out in this store. Now to their record selection, or should I say lack of. I can look through their entire stock in less than 20 minutes. And in those 20 minutes I might see 2 artists I have heard before which is pretty hard considering I listen to so many different genres of music. I've only been in here once, to sell lots of records. Initially, I was looking to go to a different record store, but I couldn't find it, my records were very heavy. So, when I found this place I walked in, hoping to get a decent sum of cash. The records, I bought in were close to being immaculate. Some of the records were older than me. But, each of them very still shiny, no scratches, and most had the original sleeve. I had an Aerosmith record, with an original ad to buy an officially aerosmith T shirt, for $2.50, (so you know it's old) Anyway, I had a diverse collection of classic rock, 80's, experimental, and jazz. Some, I know were valued at $25., atleast. But, some of the singles, probably were only valued at $2.-$3.... I was offered $75.00, for about 40 records. It's hard to say, if I got a good deal. I didn't really completely price out, my collection b4 handed them over. I've called a few places, and each record shop seems to operate the same way.. For the buyer, I think this place is a good to go. The store is very neat, it doesn't haven't the dingy smell, and the prices are good (better for the buyer, than seller) The owner is a nice guy. read more

These guys get it... Like a previous review, they don't fill this store to the rafters, but rather fill it with quality vinyl (much like Academy on E 12th). A mix of rock, jazz, soul, and 12"ers, everything is in great shape and the prices are right. Wish they had more in the way of 7" vinyl - my only complaint. Picked up some great stuff out of the $2 bins - well worth the digging...even like the rest of the store, very little crap in there... Guys working the counter were real nice, not pretentious or dickish... Not sure how much stuff cycles through here in a given month, so will hit it again in a couple weeks and update... read more

Oakland's kick ass Stranded Records in the NYC shop. Somewhat expensive, but generally worth it as the stock in the small space is typically incredible. Dangerous if you are on a budget. Well organized, good browsing tunes, and in a cool neighborhood. The owner, whose name I did not catch, seemed very friendly and a good sense of humor. I went here during one of my manic crate-filling episodes. Once every two months I'll blow a few hundred dollars on records. I have a circuit that I usually run, but I was with my brother and he suggested that we try this place on our way to another shop. I don't know what it was, but I didn't really get that excited about this place. The 3 for $5 bins were pretty deep, but I didn't see anything that I was interested in. The curated bins with the better records were nice, but again, I didn't see anything I had to have. (I did find a lot of good records I already own, so I had to pass on those) The punk section was about four fingers thick. That didn't really matter to me, but it seemed rather small in comparison to the other genres. Other than that, the store was clean, prices were fair, and it was easy to browse. All of the records I tried were in excellent condition and very quiet, no static or anything. (that's paramount for me, nice, clean records) All in all, I think Good Records NYC is a nice shop, a little out of my normal record buying circuit, but definitely a good place to look. read more
