This place is a time capsule. The prices, for what's on offer, are, IMHO, somewhat too high. The quality of the used stock is variable (check for scratches and warps before purchasing). A bit musty/dusty. Bruce Eder, the one member of the staff I have met, is out of this world knowledgeable and personable. I am rock/pop vinyl collector so I cannot speak to the classical or jazz on offer. Half Upper West Side museum, half history lesson, half record store. An enjoyable place to visit and learn. There are better record stores in NYC, but not better record store experiences.

This is the vibe at Westsider Records!

Love Westsider Records. The gentleman that works there is one of the nicest, most helpful, inciteful men that I have encountered in the service industry!!! Bravo Westsider Records!! You rock!!!

Narrow, but dense! Records, tapes, and postcards galore.

Westsider Records is a joy. It has a very low-key presence on W 72nd--I almost missed it while walking by--but it goes back pretty far once you're in the store, so there's a large collection to browse. I loved chatting with Bruce and hearing more about his writing career and adventures from over 60 years living in the city. There's a turntable in the back with a small label--"The Listening Station"--for folks who want to try out some records. I was too nervous to do so myself, but what a nice touch! I enjoyed browsing the postcards, which included everything from black-and-white prints of poets, quotes from writers, fuzzy old prints of Bob Dylan, and my personal favorite, an array of zany vintage sci-fi book covers. I picked up about four or five, and took Bruce's recommendation to also check out the Westsider Rare & Used Books on Broadway (he made sure to mention their cat, which I haven't seen yet but am determined to find).

Such a great spot! Visiting from out of town and had a great experience. Got several records as gifts and a lot of education from the staff on music history .

Forgot this was here!! Cool store and building. 5/26/16

Buying and Selling at Book Off What a cool store. So much to…read moresee. Unfortunately, it is lousy to sell at and expensive to buy at. First, Selling. I brought in three statue items unopened in the original packaging. I checked on ebay for what the items sold for (not asking price but sold price) and it added up to about $600, I lugged the items over there and had to leave them there because they wouldn't get to them right away. The people/kids working there were very nice. I went to have lunch and got the text to return, and they are offering $150. So I picked up the items and turned down the offer. Again, they were very nice, it's just I wasn't willing to accept 25% of the value. I figured at worst it would be 50%. But I am better off getting closer to the actual price on ebay. Now, Buying. Lots of very expensive and exiting things to get, and I didn't have time to price check things so much, but my son is into the Nintendo switch and i spotted a used Marvel VS Capcom game he might like. It was $34.95. But just in case, I pulled up Amazon and looked the game up. A brand new one costs $21.79. So it would have been a terrible idea for me to buy it there. I guess if you are leaving work and need a quick gift, you might stop in and pay too much for an item. If you are in real trouble and don't have time to wait for an Ebay sale, you might consider selling your collectables for 25% the value, this place might come in handy.

These two characters; as well, as the actors played well off each other.  Seeing the behind the scenes would be a real treat.  Especially the sexual situations between them for the first time.  It was one of the funniest things that happened in the story. Hiromi Kawabe or Ms. Tsuchiya as I will be calling for the rest of this review,  has done a number of other voice acting jobs.  I will name a few of them.  EVA in "Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater" (VG) (Japanese)                 EVA in "Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker" (VG) (Japanese)) Flint in "Monsters at Work" (animated series) (Japanese) Tsuchimugo in "Sakura Taisen 2: Kimi, Shinitamou koto Nakare" (VG) (Japanese) Maybe you have heard of some of these titles. It would seem that the name of Binetsu Shokogun or Slight Fever Syndrome  isn't on the list of Animation movies, but there are probably many I don't know about. It does seem to matter if the Animation is Adult Erotica or Regular Animation.    Voice Acting is Voice Acting.   Still I find porn whether it be Anime Porn with comedy or Adult Porn with comedy in it to be an unbeatable combination.    When comedy enters into porn, you are likely to get better porn acting...and yes, there are porn actors who can actually act. Ms. Tsuchiya's voice acting will have to be one I follow more closely. Ms. Tsuchiya aka Hiromi Kawabe has a nice voice.

In the end, it would have been faster to order it myself online. More recently, I tried to exchange a gift I received, a biography (not a musical score), that I already owned. I simply wanted to exchange the biography, which was clearly unread, for a different one that was actually more expensive. I was happy to pay the difference. I even had the physical receipt. Both were full-price books, not discounted items. The exchange was declined under their umbrella policy. I understand having a policy in place to protect publishers, but it would be clearer to simply state "All Sales Final on Printed Materials." Instead, the language references "copyrighted materials," which suggests there may be exceptions, when in practice there are not. I want to support a neighborhood brick and mortar music shop. But when selection is limited, flexibility is minimal, and communication is inconsistent, it becomes difficult to justify staying loyal. I am disappointed to say, that I will likely purchase my scores and books elsewhere going forward. At times, the store feels oriented more toward internal or institutional purchases than toward the musicians and readers who live in the neighborhood.

However; the reason why I'm writing this update is because there are some changes at the store. Firstly; the large "Information Desk" at the rear of the first floor is no longer there. Instead, there's a small one on the right side of that floor (and it's almost hidden). Secondly; the huge first floor display of beautiful photo books of NYC and environs is now much smaller (although it seemed like there were more of them on the lower level than previously). There's also another change; the restrooms are now only accessible with a code, and a code can only be obtained via a receipt - so if you don't buy anything, you can't use the restroom (I ordered some books online later, since I didn't want to lug them home from the store). Further; employees don't have access to a bathroom code (obviously they have some other way to access the restrooms). I was there for a few hours - and if it wasn't for the fact that I had a dental appointment nearby afterwards, it would have been problematic. Having said that, I do realize that the restroom situation is an issue; at the Union Square store in particular, there used to be a big problem with homeless people and undoubtedly a corporate decision was made. I'm still keeping a five-star rating because of the employees and because the store has a great selection.

It feels so nostalgic and I'm so glad to see it's around. I used to spend hours in here during high school / college years admiring all the book covers and all the pretty sections for journals and such. I used to frequent the large Union Sq location until it closed. I'm guilty of being a primarily ebook and audio book consumer but nothing beats the feeling of holding one in your hand, flipping the pages and writing that book smell! This location is well kept and organized. I actually came in looking to buy a hard copy of Wuthering Heights but ended up leaving with 4 books total! Old habits die hard but I was glued to their stationary and journey section, everything's so pretty! However I do think those items are pretty overpriced, $20-22 for a small journal. All these years I still can't bring myself to spend that on a blank journal...no matter how pretty the covers are. But hey they make good eye candy. Cashiers are chill, friendly. I'll be back! Can't wait for a chance to visit again.
