My mother's Smith Corona "Coronet" Automatic 12 electric typewriter needed repairs. The carriage…read morewould not return and was stuck in the CAPS position. I also need a new ribbon installed. Bob handed the typewriter off to to his skilled repairman and it was turned around in just one day! The repairman also lubricated it where needed. The total cost for repairs and installing the ribbon was just $97.50. I immediately took it to my sister-in-law, who was an Executive Secretary. She ran the typewriter through it's paces at 90 words/minute and confirmed that everything was in perfect working order. Thanks to CBS for restoring a family heirloom to working condition!

I cannot urge you more strongly NOT to use this business. They are completely unprofessional and…read morerude and did NOT do what I asked or what they said they would. you know how you sometimes see a car in a lot, that is a hoarder car, with papers up to the windows and a tiny spot for the driver? THAT is what you are walking into in this place. It is a complete disaster of papers everywhere, with a guy sitting in the middle of it. Crap is piled EVERYWHERE! And they JUST moved in! I took a manual typewriter to them to be cleaned and a new ribbon put in. It is an old collectible. It is not an expensive typewriter, just kind of neat. I asked them to assess it and to call me before the work was done, if it would be over $50. I had to call THEM twice to ask about it. The first call, Bob, the owner, said his guy hadn't been in but he'd be there the next day. It had been 5 days already. He couldn't tell me how much it would cost yet. Fine. Call me back please. Two days later, he calls me back and says it is done, and the bill is $53.00 and change. I decide to not harp on the extra $3 and say, "So, it's been cleaned and works well and had been re-inked or the ribbon replaced?" He says "Yes, wait no. If you want a ribbon, that will be an extra $9.95." I remind him that I asked to be called with an estimate, including a ribbon, if the total was over $50, and now it was going to be almost $64???? I was not at all happy, but need this done and assumed I would take the hit for his oversight because I needed it back. Fine. Put in the ribbon. "OK, well my guy won't be back for a few days..." "Seriously? You own this business and you can't put a ribbon in it???" "OK, well I will get it done tomorrow." says Bob. Tomorrow comes and goes and it's nearing 5pm and I was 1 mile from his business running errands, so I call to see if I can get it, rather than have to go back again. I am asked to come back after 5:30, because Bob needs to go to the post office. I am supposed to kill 45 minutes of MY time, because this dude needs to go to the post office during his business hours, and he says his staff "has to leave". I reiterate that I am now less than 1 mile from him, on the road in my car approaching him as the conversation proceeds, and I should wait??? He says ok, come now. I get there in under 2 minutes, go in and there's my machine. It isn't in it's case. It has greasy fingerprints on it, I lift the cover to find more greasy crap that wasn't on it when I took it in. I am now mad. I say, "This hasn't been cleaned! You didn't put a ribbon in it like I asked until I agreed to another $10. It has greasy fingerprints on the cover and under the removable plate, plus all the grime that was in it, is still there! You are crazy if you think I am paying for this. Take your ribbon out, give me my ribbon back, and I am leaving." He says, "We don't clean the outside of the typewriter!" as he proceeds to wipe the grease off with his finger and wipe it on his pants. I say, "When I take my car in for service, they do the work and wash my car so their greasy finger prints aren't all over my car. You are telling me that you are going to leave my machine filthy, inside and out? And this is OK???" He says, "Now you've made me late to get to the post office! I needed to get there to pay my bills and now I can't because you are taking 20 minutes for this. Excuse me for going $2 over your budget!" "Uh, my budget was $50. You are charging me almost $64. Check your math." I told him I wasn't paying for a thing. He told me I wasn't taking my typewriter. That his "guy" had used a special brush and solvent and scrubbed my typewriter keys for 10 minutes and oiled the machine. How I didn't hit him is beyond me. Seriously. Because I am a photographer, I photo document everything. I had taken 15 pics of my machine prior to taking it in. Inside and out, close ups. Not to be mean, just because I have a thing for before and after shots. I commented that I would be back in the morning, with my photos, so I could show him proof that nothing was cleaned and stormed out. 30 seconds after storming out, I decided to go back in, write him the check for $50 and take my machine. Which I did, and he wouldn't give me a receipt, so I grabbed my typewriter and left, spouting un-lady-like expletives at him and his ridiculous joke of a business. I will never tell anyone anything but bad things - the truth - about my experience. There are two other companies who fix and service these machines in the metro Detroit area. Use the other two instead. This man, his office, his company... all a complete and utter mess and joke. I got home, looked at it again, and it has a big scratch on my case, one of the rubber feet is missing from the bottom, and the keys all stick. The man is an idiot, a total disaster, and his company's workmanship is for crap. He should be SO ashamed of himself. What a rip off!!!
