State of New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission - Like waiting for Id point check

Where do I begin. It's the DMV, it almost feels like it's supposed to be painful. If you have an…read moreappointment here, I'm sure it's less painful. But if you don't and depending for what you are here for be prepared to wait. I had the pleasure of being here due to some snafu that happened when I left for California, basically the equivalent of a car registration suspension. What they tell you, is that you'll get 4 texts (it's automated" tabs after the fourth text you'll go to counter stated on the text. What they don't tell you is that it is 2 hours from the first text telling you you are registered until you are "almost there". Then it's another 30 minutes before the next 2 texts come through. Sure, you could go home, or go get breakfast in between those texts. BUT then you'll have to battle it out for parking in the smallest DMV parking lot in the state. Honestly how is this the regional facility if it has no parking, has not had a building update since at least the 90s The positive? I felt like the staff was nice to me, they really do work to try and get you sorted so that you could get out of there. Overall limited parking, 2.5 hour wait, but the positive of quick service at the actual window. Would absolutely avoid if you can get things done at a different DMV.

It was chaotic, disorganized, mismanaged, and full of miserable people who seemed to take pleasure turning an already awful experience into absolute hell. It was the only location somewhat close to my home where I could get my license renewed and not have to wait several months out. Now I know why. First of all, there's nowhere to park. We pull up ahead of our appointment at 8:20 am and there's already no parking in the lot. There are people standing around outside in freezing weather with no official telling anyone what to do or where to wait. I walked to the door and said we had an appointment. Told to check in at the desk, which we did. Was told to fill out a paper and wait on a very long line that snaked around a corner. Got a number texted to me noting that I had checked in. Waited about 20 mins. Two people at the desk, but one was occupied with one person the entire time I was waiting, so really only one person was moving the line. Then I get up there and I had mistakenly written "USA" where I should have written my NJ county -- I thought it said "country." Woman lectured me that I filled out my paperwork too fast! Gave me a blank paper and told me to fill it out again and get to the back of the line. Commiserated with another woman who had "Dk Brown" next to eye color when it should have just said "Brown," and the woman made her get to the back of the line and fill out the form all over again too. The woman behind the counter was so rude to people who were not native English speakers in the worst kind of stereotypical way -- she kept screaming the English words at them slowly, as if this would help. This person should not be employed in New Jersey where we have a diverse population! After the second try, I made it through only to wait on another snaking line, even longer this time -- about 1/2 hr -- for the "ID check." There were four windows, but some times only 1 or 2 people were assisting. All along, I keep getting text messages like, "Your number will be called soon!" Turns out, that number I was texted meant nothing. I'm given ANOTHER number at the ID check. I went to sit down at one of the two crowded waiting areas. The woman behind the ID booth stopped me and said, "Oh, you want to sit over there (the other section) since they'll be calling people up from there." Of course there were no signs telling anyone where to go. This point took the longest, about an hour and 1/2 from the wait to being done. There was a woman with a clipboard calling numbers but what if I had sat down in the other section? Would I be waiting all day? The place was chaos. There was no help, no one answering questions, no signage, no guidance. Oh, but every now and then a woman would come out from some back room and scream at people waiting on line to have their paperwork filled out correctly. While I was waiting, a horrible person came over the loudspeaker and read off license plate numbers of people who they were going to call the police on because their cars were parked in the lot in non spots. My number was eventually called and I stood on yet another line to be seen by the people who actually process the license. Again a long wait. There were about 6 stations, but often just one or two people were working--sometimes none! I was finally next in line and was waiting in the same place as the person ahead of me when a woman came from out of nowhere and literally pulled hard on my shoulder and yanked me back, yelling "you're too close!" I wasn't blocking the aisle, there was no line I was over, no sign telling you where to wait. I can't believe she manhandled me! I think she didn't want me to see how few people were actually working at one time. Again, non-English speaking people were treated so rudely and held up the process because no one working there seemed to speak Spanish, which is crazy at a location like Newark. When leaving, there were people crowded in the vestibule and again were getting threatened by the staff to move or else. It is the fault of the people managing this place for being disorganized -- not the folks there to get their business done who are given no direction or help. Wound up talking to many folks during the wait and everyone said the same thing -- not just that staff were rude, but that they were demeaning, belittling and insulting. This should not be tolerated and isn't in other locations, which is disgusting. Whoever manages this place should be fired or reassigned to a desk in a dark corner somewhere to do no further harm to people. This DMV is an embarrassment to the state of New Jersey.

I don't know why the State of NJ chooses to treat its residents like this (that we deserve nothing but bare-bones jail visiting room decor, passive-aggressive handwritten signs, no pens, 1980s technology) but hey we need to get licenses and plates and whatever. Some tips: 1. Bring a pen. They don't have pens or they will lend you a pen and make you feel scared and indebted to them for the privilege. 2. Go in the middle of the month if you can. They're busiest during beginning and end of the month. 3. Be nice to the people working there. Even if they are rude to you, they have an incredibly tough job and deserve kindness. Plus I found most of them are very nice and helpful if you're properly deferential. 4. The six points of ID thing is super important. Make sure you got everything you need before you go. In the long term we need a 21st century DMV (sorry, MVC) that respects its workers and users, not a dilapidated 1980s Soviet bus station. I hope the MVC workers' union gets militant and starts demanding much more funding. But in the meantime I went on a Friday afternoon and had a fine experience.

The police had stopped me that day and informed me that my rear license plate was from a reported stolen car. Apparently, the day before, someone had unscrewed my rear license plate and replaced it with a plate from a stolen vehicle. Long story short, I rushed to the DMV in Newark as I needed new plates. They could not help me there and said I needed to go the East Orange office. When I arrived at the East Orange DMV it was approaching closing time. I went to the info desk where Lucille gave me the necessary paper work to fill out and clear instructions on what I needed to complete. As I was filling out the paper work, she kindly came over to me to remind me know they were closing soon and that Michael would assist me once I completed the paper work. Once done, Michael was ready and processed the paper work and within minutes I had my new plates. I so appreciate their help and professionalism. I know the DMV often gets a bad rap, but I have nothing but praise for Lucille's and Michael's help that day. Also, the DMV folks in Newark were kind enough to find the East Orange location for me so I could get going. Thank you!

I got my license with Autonautics! Yay!…read more My journey of obtaining a license was long and arduous. I'm in my 30's and had zero driving experience prior so when I started taking lessons, I was very nervous. I first took lessons with Lama Driving School and signed up for their 7 lesson package. Their instructors only made me feel even more nervous with each lesson. Instead of staying calm and being attentive, their instructors would, for example, get upset and say, "Why would you do that?!" in a dramatic manner when I looked left and right while driving past an intersection. They would also talk on the phone during the lesson. I drove 4 different cars and each car had their own kinks, so it was very hard for me to get a hang of actually learning how to drive. Their cars were also poorly maintained. On top of that, all of their instructors had a very thick accent that many times, I had to ask them to repeat themselves. I needed an alternative solution. Now that you know what to avoid in a driving school, this is where Autonautics comes in. A friend told me about Autonautics and she only had nice things to say about them. I contacted them, spoke with one of their staff, Chrissy, and was able to make an appointment with Anthony. Anthony was a great instructor. Most importantly, he was calm. He walked me through each step and corrected any mistakes I made. I've taken about 10 lessons with him and each time, it was the same car, a Honda Accord that was about 2-3 years old. That made it a lot easier to focus on my techniques. Even though I didn't pass until the 3rd time, I had no one else to blame but myself. At the first road test, I actually went with another instructor. Turned out her car had an expired inspection sticker so the examiner didn't allow me to take the test using that car [of course]. She called another instructor for me to use his car, a Hyundai that I had never driven before. That, along with the fact that my nerves got the best of me, I didn't realize there were 2 gears in drive (it didn't have D1 or D2), and apparently I was on the low gear the whole time and the examiner told me towards the end. I pretty much failed because my uncontrollable nerves made it seem like I was uncomfortable behind the wheel. At the second road test, everything was going buttery smooth until I backed up a little too much while parallel parking and hit the curb. Automatic fail. The examiner told me, "You were doing so well until you hit the curb. You did everything just fine." What killed me was that it was a mistake I never did during all of my practice sessions. Well, now I know exactly what to look out for and not to do. Autonautics said that the next earliest road test was at least 1.5 months away. Chrissy offered to wait a couple days to see if there were any cancellations so she can get me in earlier. And that they did! Instead of 1.5 months, now it was in 2 weeks. Anthony and I did a couple more lessons beforehand and boom! I passed. He told me to just relax and focus on each single move and not to think too much, especially past failed road tests. I kept that advice in my mind and succeeded. Thank you, Anthony!

My son would call to schedule his test and you have to pay. They promised to email the invoice for payment at the end of the day and the email never came. Several times he tried. Then we tried obtaining his drivers ed certificate number to schedule on our own. Again several phone calls with promises of sending the information later on that day and they would not come through. Do not use this driving school. They are unreliable and very unprofessional.

I was a few minutes late for my appointment and honestly, there was a chance I wouldn't even be taken that day but they did take me. They tried their best to accommodate people who arrive late. My absolute biggest advice for you is to get there early even 15 minutes early so you don't have to have this hassle. We got there on time, but of course walking through the parking lot and spotting the facility took extra time and that's what made me late so don't make that mistake! Once you arrive in time for your appointment, everything will go super smooth and quickly! They'll call you in. They mainly wanna make sure that it's you the person that's coming in and once you do that it'll move fast as long as you have all the right documents. I really recommend doing this, especially if you travel internationally.

Once submitted, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will review it, and you'll then need to schedule an interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center. Ours was at Newark Liberty International Airport. It's mandatory to arrive on time, so we parked at Terminal B short-term parking to make things easier. The Global Entry Enrollment Center is located in Terminal B on the ground floor, behind the domestic baggage carousel. If you get a little turned around as we did, just stop by the welcome help kiosk, and someone will gladly point you in the right direction. Be sure to bring your current passport and your driver's license (or a bill showing your current address). After checking in, you'll be seated until an officer comes out and calls the time of your scheduled appointment. Once inside, they'll fingerprint you (via digital scan), review your application, and ask a few routine questions. The process is straightforward and painless. It is essentially a background and integrity check to confirm you're a low-risk traveler before granting the five-year membership. My interview was brief and professionally handled. Everything ran like clockwork and was completely hassle-free. I was in and out within five minutes. Overall, I was very impressed by the staff's friendliness and professionalism, and by how efficient the entire process was.
